haven’t watched a lot of freo, so not sure where he might be an upgrade for us (trade for needs etc etc). Brown? Macpherson?
Fair bit quicker than those two and he's a player that can be used in the midfield rotations unlike most of our current small/medium defenders who lack the versatility to do that. I think Luke Brown will need a big pre-season or he may lose his spot.

I don't know much about him but surely the only role could be midfield given the number of defensive options we have now, unless Milera is being targetted for midfield :)

Hmm, Tucker is OOC

I'd take him only if we were extremely confident we were able to manage list spots well in the 2022 offseason (i.e. elevate Keays/Butts/Strachan all at once without too much difficulty)

He has a future at AFL level, IMO. How much of a future that is, I don't know, but it might be worth trying (more Keays than Crocker IMO)

Darcy does offer speed and run and carry and I know we showed plenty of interest in him at the Rebels....can be an aggressive bugger too which I've seen up close.

Players coming out of contract next year

Contracted until end of 2022
Ned McHenry
Billy Frampton
Elliot Himmelberg
Ben Keays (R)
Mitch Hinge
James Rowe
Jackson Hately
Paul Seedsman
Taylor Walker
Lachlan Gollant
James Borlase (R)
Tariek Newchurch (R)
Patrick Parnell (R)

There's a few pretty obvious spots to be freed up (Walker retiring presumably, Himmelberg and Frampton delisted) but it gets harder beyond that and we might need to make some tough calls on players (eg Seedsman)

It would be easier if the AFL change rules back to a 44 seniors + cat-A rookies list (plus cat B's) next year

Would mean we could, say, move Rowe to the rookie list (while retiring Walker and delisting Him and Framp), and still have 6 senior list spots (that said, I still think it's best to space out the elevation 1 (2021)/2 (2022))

McHenry, Keays, Hinge, Gollant look to be the players we would stick with past 2022. Frampton, Himmelberg, Rowe, Hately will likely be moved on. Seedsman probably traded with Dawson coming onboard. Walker to retire. Depends how they go next year for the last 3.

Would he be in our best 22 ?? Or more of a 23-28 player range

FWIW I think Hately is contracted until 2023, unless his deal is structured in a Menzel-like manner

And *if* Seed keeps some resemblance of his form up, I doubt he gets traded (for the same reason Smith won’t be moved on soon)

Anyone think it's do or die for Hately this year?

I think the writing is already on the wall for him.

I'm assuming that we'll be drafting a mid at Pick 4 and with Matt Crouch returning from injury it's going to take a monumental turn around for him to carve out a spot in our 22.

I think we'll hold him to his contract which ends at the end of 2023, but just don't see him being on our list after that.

Just don't see where he fits, he's older and not as good as Dawson in the same position.

Unless he returns to an inside and outside role like he played earlier in his career, or am I dreaming that?

Very much, “we’ll consider him if there’s nothing better on offer”. Which is exactly how it should be.
Honestly after Dawson, I'd rather just use our remaining picks at the draft. Why would we even want to go down that road of a Dumont when we are building a young list and we already have guys like Seedsman, Smith, Milera, Laird, Crouch, Tex, Brown etc for leadership on field

I think he likely re-signs at Freo, though I do know he is pretty close with Tom Doedee through there Vic Country basketball and footy representation and I know Tom has dropped into the Tucker's home in Horsham to see Darcy during their summer break on his way to and from Adelaide. Might be a connection there?

I reckon I heard last year the Cats had shown interest but he's probably to young for them? ;)
