Pretty much.

Haters gotta hate.

Negative people gotta be negative.

Have to chuckle at the keyboard experts getting so worked up about something totally outside their control.

And sycophants are going to ride any pole they can.

All perspectives are equally amusing, don't you think?

You do realise Cal said this morning he thinks we pick Hotton, right? Said we’re red hot on him and Hotton may even be invited to draft night now.

Yep, and last night he wrote this in his late mail phantom;

Not surprised at all if we don’t use our first selection on Hotton - take someone else there then also craft a pick swap in the late teens / early twenties to secure him too

The issue (apart from the obvious injury risk) is that players go up and down the draft order all the time based on their final year before being drafted. I know that write up says he was "shooting up the ranks" but had he played past May he might just as easily failed to perform at the champs and dropped in ranking

In what has been consistently reported as a very even draft, I just don't understand why we would take the risk.

But I also haven't spent years watching these kids either

Nah he’s a gun, just slid since disappearing early this year and faded in to the background due to that and question marks on recovery. Pretty sure he would have smashed the champs going on prior form

I wouldn't have a clue but I think this is WCE plan .....

If you can imagine the prospect of Hotton without the knee, it’s a very very promising one. It’s unsexy for now as he is in rehab for a while longer, but seeing as though we aren’t winning the flag in the next couple years it really could be great, and I’m sure he’ll recover fine for the long term. It’s just I’ll be a bit flat / less excited for now than if we pick up a mid who will likely be there for R1 at Optus. There’d be far worse picks. I still want Lindsay/TT/Reid/Allan but if I’m honest it’s probably mostly for that pretty flimsy reason

I don't mind Hotton, super talented, could be one of the best picks in the draft if he recovers well.

An ACL is bloody concerning, but Will 'normboy' ashcroft came back impressively.

There's a lot of risk though, particularly with the precarious state of our list and our track record with injury prone draftees.

I'll back our draft team in if they think he's the best talent... but **** me, if it doesn't work out there needs to be some firings in the recruitment space.

What is the rationale behind this? I don't understand why clubs wouldn't be keen to make the reigning premiers pay up for one of the best prospects in the pool. It's not like they aren't going to match any bid so why would you not bid immediately?

I get Richmond because it would have been a condition of getting pick 20 from Brisbane. I don't know if any reason why North Melbourne, Carlton or Adelaide wouldn't bid on Ashcroft.

There's a scenario that I can see as a shock slide

1 Lalor tigers
2 Draper crows trade.
Blues are into 2 players, Draper and FOS. Crows need to get ahead of that. If north stay at 2 they'll take FOS and leave the blues to take Draper.
3 FOS blues
4ashcroft
5 Tauru north
6 langford dees
7 smillee tigers
8 TT saints
9 lombard
10 lindsay saints
11 allen dees
12 shanahan tigers
13 kako
14 berry tigers
15 Jaggar eagles.

Tigers get Lalor and smillee as the 2 big gun mids. They then have needs across all lines, but desperate for keys and small forwards which is why the 12 14 picks should be Shanahan and berry. They may risk one of those on hotton too.

Cal Twomey mentioned we’re also interested in Oli Hotton (and James Van Es) who were recently delisted by St Kilda. Wonder if we’re looking at keeping the brothers together to ward off homesickness?
That is exactly my fear.

Reid and Hotton both flight risks?

Then just take the player we can hopefully convince to stay by bringing his brother over to settle.

All I can guess when this happens time after time is clubs know they aren’t getting the player and want to save face and act from the start like they are all in on the player they do take for their benefit.

Someone more in the know might have additional reasoning but geez just make them work for it for once, it seems so weak and way too friendly from rival clubs

There is no chance Jagga Smith gets through to our pick

Using that rationale we could just draft Reid as we already have his brother Harley at the club.*

*brother from another mother and dad.

If clubs don't force Brisbane to match Levi at pick 1 (understand clubs hate not having the no.1 pick on their team so Tigers wont) or pick 2 at worst then we all deserve to have Brisbane win the next 5 flags.

Solution to this is.
  • if the bid is matched, the player becomes pick 2 and the club pays pick 1 price. Whilst the club with pick 1 retains pick 1. This can be done behind closed doors
  • if the bid isn’t matched, player is pick 1

Just take Reid. Do it for the memes. The only joy I can get out of this draft if we go for Reid.

Start the Reid led dynasty please!!!

Reid or bust.

Taj Hotton makes me feel uncomfortable. Nothing against him talent wise. I don't like the idea of going for a player that had their draft year cut due to injury based on past experiences.
