Well said. Gumbleton is something of the unknown. A KPP at 25, and ready for Freo to put into the side, if fit. Given him a 2 year deal, have a pre season and assess how well he can play under Lyon. To win the premiership, these sort of risks are something that need to be taken. Other chances are Mitch Thorp, J Pod and not much else..

Teams dont win premierships whithout taking risks, look at Hawks Stewart Dew, Brogan and a few oldies and well the rest is history,

Taberner has the potential to kick goals and get a few grabs, just need a good solid pre season and give him a chance. He knows how to lead well as well as being the right height for a KPP. We all know we need a short term (1-2 year) solution and build Taberner up in the WAFL.

Tabs is a lead up tall, not a pack mark tall - a taller Mayne at this point.

Gumby is other way around, can take pack marks. That is the important part, the fact he can clunk a couple leads to a defender being forced to commit to him. Even if he didn't kick a goal in the GF (were he a Docker - hypothetically), he forces Lake/Hodge to commit to him, which lets Pav and others get their one on ones. Engineering one on ones is a coaching art in the modern game, they did it to us (Gunston, Roughy) and we got exposed.

If we get Gumby do we we hope for McCarthy with 16? Given next years draft has much better depth with KPP's can we wait and go speculative tall with someone like Conlon late.

Yep I think so...I think if one of the good tall midfielders is available (Thinking Bontempelli or Acres or maybe some of the South Australians) then we should go one of them and maybe Conlon late (if he is around). I am expecting a non-west Australian non KP with our first pick....

Makes two of us. Desperately hoping McCarthy makes it to us. If not, if Darcy Gardiner happens to be available, that'd be alright too.

Gumby takes lead up marks from memory. Don't recall contested 1 on 1 marks nor pack marks.

Gumby averaged 1.6 contested marks per game this year. That's more than any Freo player.

For reference:

Gumby 1.6 Cont Marks per game.
Sandi 1.5
Griffo 1.4
Clarke 1.2
Fyfe 1.1
Pav 1.1

Would be a good fit for a club looking for a tall defender ( Power are ok in that department we are not looking ) and with Spur going well it crossed my mind you would not mind looking there again

Were in a premiership window right now and need a log to improve our odds of getting a flag. In that circumstance pick 38 is not too much to pay given we can't get another at all.

Also it's not just what he'll do but what it will allow others to do just like hill is better with Pearce in the team. Gumbleton will allow mayne to improve with the third best defender on him.

Mayne will have a killer season next year.

I just can't see us drafting a tall with our first selection, every year it gets suggested and every year it doesn't happen.

Good point Taz, I thought if Mayne had kicked even another 10 goals this year he probably would have been in the AA team on the back of media adoration (what is this!?), not even discussing the merit of it.

I'd absolutely love to see Mayne play a whole season as an actual third tall for once, more yummy crumbs for Walters and Ballas as well.

Only 25 .... check out the highlights clip in #3035.

Essendon fans almost to a man are happy to see him go after all the false hopes he has given them and the only way he can extend his career in AFL footy is to have another club think they have the magic pill to cure his ills .
What I say is he hasn't been able for 5 years what the hell do you think 2 years on our list will show , ANOTHER DICK
Give me a break and don't fall for the same Bull S**t as Connelly tried to sell us and lets develop our own and get a player with 10 years of football ahead of him and NO F**KING BAGGAGE .
JPod at least isn't coming with an injury depleted body and has finals experience as well so if that means a 3 year deal as a player and a place on the coaching panel lets get it done FFS

I'll bet that Gumby will play more games than Jpod in 2014 no matter what eventuates, let alone the next 2 years after that.

His "ills" you speak of where cured in late 2011 with his disc repaired in his back. Fast forward 2 and a bit years and no further back issues.
What more do you want if he has passed a medical?

No i think he would be better off at freo,i think he could be a good player for you.
He has been loyal to us ,could of got a good contract with dogs last year.
I would be happy with pick 33 or be happy to offer him another contract .
It is not right to keep him on our list to play seconds because of our abundance of talls.
