I don’t mind Swan Draught as an easy session beer when at a pub and it’s on tap but I’d be loathe to buy a carton of it for consumption at home.

In the late 1990s it was all about Emu Bitter. Shudder to think how much I drank between long necks at house parties as a 16 year old, $6 jugs on Thursday nights at the Zanzibar and out of glass pints in the OG beer garden at the Cott on Sunday arvos.

Of course the rise of the meathead and increase in glassings saw the pint glass at the back of The Cott go the way of the dodo and be replaced by the far inferior plastic pint.
Dunno what the **** we were thinking....even at the time it tasted like metal

I smashed far too many Carlton Colds, EB's, VB's & Ted's and even rated Crownies as top shelf. What a moron.

Haha those were the days. From memory we upgraded from EB's to Teds if we were feeling fancy. Then Crownies and Hahn Premium. Then Boags Premium.
Then a few years later discovered beer actually could taste good.

Yeah discovered Hoegaarden and Guinness early 20s. Had to go to the International Beer Shop in Leederville to get the Hoegaarden though.

It's a funny phenomenon how everybody likes to make fun of other people's taste in alcohol - like I'm guilty of it too - but really people just like what they think tastes good and can afford. It's all the ****en same poisonous shit.

Or to Belgian Beer Cafe where you had to swap your shoe for a proper Hoegarden glass

Ohh was it? I thought I was for those bucket sized Hoey glasses.

Didn't mind a sneaky cherry sour when cruising past that place

Yeah you could legit kill an elephant with those big Hoegaarden glasses, but they'd take your shoe for the Kwak glass. That place was peak gourmet in its time - nice place and all. So good to see local places making their own mark with great brews and eats now though. Fair to say you had a fair bit of a hand in those local formative days too, Dan!

Got a couple of 4 packs of the Nail & Feral VJA today, anyone given it a go yet?

Cracked a couple last night. Something was going on with my palate, was oaky as fuark. Not tonight though. Its good. Its 7.5% or something wild. Not earth shattering.

Gonna get into some cool new beers tomorrow at this beer festival 🙏

I'll be there tonight as well. Any recommendations on beers to look out for?

What were your standout beers from the night? I was a bit average at my sons 7:40am basketball game on Saturday morning.

Oh stuff that. I had my schedule cleared for Saturday haha.

Black Vanilla was up there for me. And some Range oat cream IPA I can't remember the name of. But I had a lot of good beers!

How about you?

Had a South Freo Stout that was low key excellent. I thought the Double Dragon imperial sour was the best of the Rocky Ridge releases (I missed the Donut Stout release though). Mash had an apricot version of their mango ice cream which I really enjoyed (but it is not everyone's cup of tea). There was also a red ale at Artisan that I rated as well but can't remember who made it. So hard to choose.

Had a boy's weekend in Mandurah last weekend. Hazily remember going into the Bottle-O there last weekend and the dude recommending the double red ales from here:

Didn't end up drinking any but cracked one this arvo and it's quite decent.

I grew up in Mandurah and decided to celebrate my 35th there. It ended up being very much like the Hangover movie. (seriously)
Great memories (and lost memories)

Anywho, I'm drinking this tonight... Pretty good but needs balancing with other tasty bits to make the perfect sip.

I also have a killer cocktail recipe if anyone is interested??? Powerful but very moreish and piss easy to make.

Fire away dude, what’s the recipe?

Fire away dude, what’s the recipe?

"The Velvet Sledgehammer"

Hochstadter's Slow & Low Orange Honey Rye Old Fashioned - Two full shots (I prefer the USA size. 100ml)

Fresh Lime or Lemon (I prefer Lime. Must be fresh!) 50ml

Maple Syrup (50ml - Must be real)

10-15 dashes of of Fee Brothers orange bitters

Put into shaker with ice cubes, preferably solid not hollow. Shake hard for 20 seconds. Strain if you don't like bits (I do)
Poor over one large ice cube preferably in rocks glass.

Simple but ****ing delicious!!!

* Can put a very small amount of cinnamon or nutmeg on as a light sprinkle/garnish if feeling festive.

No matter the portion, just keep a similar ratio and it'll be schmick.
