Autopsy The Bont, The Bye & The Bathwater - Dogs By Plenty

Not wildly surprising given we’ve lost off the bye 3 years straight. As have 2/3 of the other teams.

I tried to make the point after the Dees game that the style we played is what we train but aren’t good enough yet to consistently play it under pressure and that that game was an anomaly in terms of the complete absence of pressure from Melbourne.
We saw bits of it today and I was impressed by how close we got in the last after giving them an 8 goal start.

Rodger Federer over his career won 53% of points played. Yet there seems to be a perception from some that every loss is a catastrophe.

People are talking like our midfield group are uncompetitive yet we went into the game with the best clearance record in the competition.

They got a lesson from another seriously good midfield group led by the best player in the competition who put on a clinic. Last time we played Fyfe did it, Bont was quiet & we won. Today they wanted it more & our lot were still on holiday. It happens.

For me the biggest problem we have is Amiss’s kicking and JT went backwards. I am one who thinks Amiss needs to rebuild his whole routine but you can’t do that mid-season. It’s like a golfer’s swing. You have to take time off & start again.

Sturt was a big positive. Looks at home again. I’ll take 3 goals every week and his pressure was excellent.

Bring Chapman & Cox back & we have a great defense. Not sure why Worner got a gig today.

Would like to see Voss or Simpson in for Walters.

I do think Brodie deserves opportunity and some change is needed after that effort.

It’s never as good or as bad as you think.
You are so often the voice of reason :)

Watch JL press conference, they did put a tag on da Bont.
Yeah. Made the point we were annihilated on the spread and they had so many options it was pointless trying to block one outlet.
Bont is the best player in the league. You think teams didn’t try to stop Fyfe when he was?
There was 3 players trying to stop one of his goals and he beat them all.

Did anyone seriously expect anything different? When have we ever been any good off the bye?

I haven't had a chance to watch the game but just watched the highlights. It looked like the same old Freo when things don't go our way. The three things I kept thinking watching the highlights were:

1. ****ing tackle
2. Where is the defence?
3. Who the **** is on Bont?

It is maddening how often those first two points are an issue with this club.

The decline of Andrew Brayshaw from being the best player in the league in 2022 to not even being in the top 100 in 2024 is staggering and I think we all want to believe it’s not happening but it is. It really is.
Ed richards was taken in the same draft and looked in a different class altogether to Andy today. What the hell has happened?
People saying he’s injured - I don’t believe that. If he is, then he should just get fit. Take the rest of the season off and sort the problem. Coz playing on like you are a bad cross between Darcy Tucker and Reece Conca isn’t much use to anyone, is it?

I thought, yips from Treacy and Amiss aside, that the forward line was reasonably functional compared to the middle and back half.
The ultimate Dockeriness.

Get a forwardline where the pieces work, look dangerous and complement each other - everyone else goes to shit...

I’m so over JOM now. Aish was another senior player that was particularly terrible. These guys have zero intensity and really are the definition of nothing, meh players.
I can handle kids like worner and Walker having stinkers. I can even handle guys who are normally guns like Ryan and Pearce having a bad day.

But Aish and especially JOM? No. Just no. Not good enough for any serious flag contending side.

Aish is usually pretty good. I can handle an off day from him every now and again.

The coaches still don't seem to have developed a game plan to suit the confines and structure of Docklands stadium.

An absolute key to any team playing well at that stadium, but especially one which was selected as ours was, is to kick to direct leads, and have effective long kicks.

Sometimes stats can be misleading. This time, they are a real insight into the fundamental game flaw.

We won the hitouts, centre clearances, AND stoppage clearances.
That should have set us up well to be at least competitive in the pattern of play.

Yet we way overused the handball, and had many of our link up or outside players nowhere near the handballs the clearance winners were giving out.

For me the snapshot summary is:
  • each of Rory Lobb and Tim English kicked the ball the same number of times (11) as Serong did; and
  • more times than all of our other players except Walker, Ryan, Young and Clark; and
  • more times than Sharp, Aish and Johnson combined.
When players of the style of Lobb and English are kicking the ball more than 18 of your players, including many of the midfielders and flankers, you need to look at your gameplan.

Haven't read the thread, have idiots been suggesting to drop Sturt again cause he didn't tackle enough?
I don’t think anyone said that needs to be dropped, just a difference in opinion on his performance. I actually watched most of the replay and he wasn’t bad at all. Wasn’t exactly a superstar either but no one was on a dirty day like today, you could almost say a rare shining light.

I thought he was one of our better forwards, on a day when they ball use into F50 was pretty abysmal.

He did chase and apply pressure, and also kicked straight in his shots for goal. Not much more to say really, except I think he will always be one of the first JL drops, instead of an Aish or a JOM or a Johnson.

I appreciate the “you win some, you lose some” mindset and some overall perspective, but it’s the weight of the margin that’s deflating for me.

This wasn’t a hard fought game that we were on the wrong side of.

There were stretches at the end of the 2nd/start of 3rd, then again at the end of the game where we just rolled over and let them pile on goals. We’ve seen that once before this year in the Eagles game when the score blew out to 90-30 or so before we did some damage control. You can pass that off as an aberration since it wasn’t the norm, but now we’ve had 2 of those.
