The suspension is fair enough but it would have been nice to see Oliver officially called out for the dive.

I've done stupider stuff than taking a dive on a footy field when older than 19 so to say he's tainted is harsh.

Funnily enough he'd probably actually get a lot of credit from oppo/neutral fans if he came out and said it wasn't something he deliberately set out to do, it wasn't a good look and he'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

Not to say that he'd care either, just saying I have time and respect for anyone who can at least own up to their mistakes.
He did say that.

Two incidents early in his career is unfortunate though. Reputations can be built quickly in the afl.
No doubt. He'll be watched closely by all n sundry now. But saying a 25 game player is forever tainted is a stupid (and transparent) overreaction. May not even register as a footnote by the time he hangs up the boots.

Considering the bullshit in this thread I hope Schofield challenges, fails, and cops another week.

If Schofield didn't elbow a bloke in the chin off the ball at half time he would be playing this week.
I know you have to defend your own players vigorously, but there was a lot of push and shove. He was unfortunate that his forearm shove got Oliver high as he was moving back. He didn't intend to hit him with the elbow. But we live and die by our actions.

You shouldn't want players to get two weeks for that, if you're being honest.

Hopefully it doesn't. I thought the same about Jack Darling when he looked amazing and kicked 50 goals as a second year forward and had one or two silly staging incidents, but he never got rid of it.

This threads becoming as salty as some of the post game queens birthday threads.
If you actually think Oliver will have his career defined by this incident you are so far off it ain't funny. No doubt he'll cop a bit of flack this year but no one will give a rats soon enough.
People think a few sledges will put him off obviously haven't noticed what he did in the second half. Was instrumental in our win and played a huge part in the last goal. Had a tagger hanging off him all night to.

The Swans players will be gunning hard for him I reckon.

If I were his direct opponent I'd give him a nudge just before the opening bounce, then flop backwards in the biggest soccer dive of all time. Why not troll him, try to get in his head?

I don't get why so many Dees supporters are trying to pretend that it wasn't a dive. The correct response is "Fine he's a tosser, but he's a great young player and he's OUR tosser." It's not like every club doesn't have at least one or two players who are complete d-bags, but are beloved by fans because they're good at football.

Dude looks like Ben Stokes if Ben's parents were meth addicts who dropped him on his head when he was a kid.

Just like no one remembers Thomas, Ballantyne, or Lloyd's dives. Oh wait. Or Joel Selwood or Like Shuey for ducking. Oh, wait.

Poor kid will find it hard to shake this, especially after doing his best to get a fellow player suspended after the fact.

That's the way to fast track yourself to being the next player regularly booed.

Oohhh no poor kid will get booed. I'm sure he's shaking in his boots. Laughable.

Judging by how he reacted to Damien Martyn, I think sledging affects him quite a bit.

On the way to being the next Lindsay Thomas.

Laughable :thumbsu:

It's a psychological drain that even seasoned players have had difficulty overcoming.

He can claim all the mental toughness in the world, but eventually this will grind him down.

Melbourne have done him a huge disservice by not dealing with this matter properly.

lol Melbourne supporters getting antsy.

In the end it was always a marginal call as to whether Schofield would get suspended, I am not surprised of this outcome.

That being said, thread is about Clayton Oliver. It isn't about Will Schofield or Jack Darling. Your lot won on Saturday night, enjoy it and be gracious winners. I thought a decade of being mediocre and worse would've taught you humility.
You know better than to ascribe to a heterogeneous population the vocal opinion of a minority few. For shame. FOR SHAME!

(That's right. Hetero)

Wonder how some of the whinging Eagles here would go getting a jab like that to jaw from a professional athlete of Schofield's physique. He made intentional contact with him, leading with th elbow which was a piss weak effort

Kidding yourself if you believe that.

I'm trying to understand how this is a fine but Schofield gets rubbed out. The only difference seemingly being that Oliver staged and then pretended to have a sore jaw.

Fair enough. Shame on me. Some Melbourne supporters have at least admitted Oliver milked it.

Please. The very same round this happened...

Deemed careless and to the body. Mark Baguley also remained on his feet. Was always risking a week when Schofield had his elbow out there but Oliver's reaction is not winning him fans from outside Melbourne.
