Analysis The Coach – Simon 'Standard Practice' Goodwin: It's time to go (for real this time)

Trying to avoid the negativity of the media but just wondering if any commentators/analysts have actually started questioning our structure, game plan, and team composition? Hoping maybe some external noise from respected figures might actually get Goodwin or someone at the club to change things, because if we keep going how we are going, we ain't making finals.
It was the first topic and took up a big chunk of On the Couch. Lots of great birds eye view footage from the goals of our defends pressing way too high and letting goals out the back.

Funny thing is it's Roos analysing it and having no idea what we are trying to do. Hopefully Goody has a long chat with him about defensive structures.

Footy classified also talked about it for a little bit. Mainly addressed the fact we are playing with no wings and are trying to be too cute having 2 behind the ball running in at centre bounces.

Thanks, I might find the replay of on the couch and watch it. Was hoping Roos had an opinion and hope people at the club are listening

During Roos' last season as coach for us, when Goody took a lot of control over the game plan, after a loss Roos during the press conference had a crack at us not playing defence well, the media speculated this was directed at Goody's game plan.

If Viney and Tyson play fewer than 15 games we won’t make finals

This was a pretty good piece of insight/analysis on how Clarkson smashed Goodwin in the coaches box:

Other clubs will be laughing heavily at this thread.

The positive thing with Goodwin is that the players clearly understand the game plan. I actually have no problem with the forward pressing game plan and think it’s won the last few premierships.

Goodwin desperately needs to coach the players how to switch to plan B or a more defensive/slow structure at the right time during the game (without needing to wait for a quarter break).

If he can coach the players to assess when to revert to setting up behind the ball and slowlin the game down to stop opposition run ons of 4-6 goals, then we will halve our number of losses.

Not really, the no wings plan worked pretty well last year. Clarkson had a plan and executed it incredibly well and Goodwin had no plan B.
When did we play no wings last year? We regularly played with an extra off the back of the square (the extra came from the forward line, not the wings), but this was the first time I can recall us ever playing with the much more drastic no wings.

Us starting with extras behind the footy is the worst tactic in the AFL. We pick all these gun clearance players then load up our backline so everytime we win a clearance we kick it forward to an out number. If anything we should back our defence and send the extras forward so that we can score from a clearance.

Really starting to feel like a gimmick an u15's coach would implement

It's a good tactic to have up our sleeve to pull out from time-to-time but not as our bread and butter.

Clarkson is a genius. Dimma isn't nearly as good of a match day coach as Clarko or even Chris Scott, which gives me some hope

I'm still unsure as to why we didn't send players to man up the guys who were shepherding the man on the mark after the ump called play on. You're allowed to break the 10m protected space rule if your running with the opposition. We could have just gone at the kicker as soon as play on was called.

Don't expect to beat Richmond but we need to change our system to get the most out of this team (Seriously we've changed nothing with our gameplan, they're just hoping natural improvement from the u23 talent carries us). Would like to see some evidence of this on Tuesday night.

- Reduce the goals from 0-15m out
- Have the right guys on the last line (Vince Lewis Brayshaw are NOT the right guys)
- More efficient ball use and playing the conditions correctly (Thank god it isn't forecast to rain this week)

Account didn't last...

There's no reason why we can't win on Tuesday, honestly. Clubs that are meant to be behind us are doing a number on good clubs this season.

Far too thought out for that username. Remember, must make a new enemy every week even though you don't remember who.

I feel a bit better watching yesterday's game Hawthorn vs North. It's going to be a season of who rocks up on the day. Also I think Brad Scott went in with a better plan.
Yeah we were great in the first quarter last week. Ultimately I think it’ll be a good lesson for Goody in the long run, completely out coached

Honestly we outplayed them in the second but kicked 4 behinds to 4 goals. Confidence got shot to pieces in the third and by the fourth we were just going through the motions.
