This is true, and he is very strong overhead, takes a great pack mark.

On a general note, am thrilled to be at the big dance against such a quality side. It should be a great game of footy:thumbsu:

The feeling is definitely mutual.

It's a genuine 50/50 game between the two best years of the year, exactly what we want.

Of course that doesn't mean I tip my glass at the end of the day and say "Good game old chaps" if we were to lose :D May have to wait a week or so for that

Personally think it'll be the Sydney defensive unit that decides this game, I'm confident we'll generate enough inside 50s to win the game but if Richards, Grundy, Mattner, Shaw, Johnson & Smith can play as well as they always do you'll be able to do an Adelaide and just cut us apart on the rebound.

Do we think the predicted weather will work to our advantage or disadvantage? I think a bit of both, if it's wet and windy, we might not need to worry so much about one-on-one contests in our backline and a lot of our forwards prefer the crumbs and play on style. However, a lot of our game plan relies on high skill midfielders and half backs hitting their targets.

I have rehashed the game in my mind, (and I did watch it several times,I wasn't going to)but,we were woeful on Saturday, but we still won!. Why does everyone say that Adelaide should have won that game, we WERE woeful, then they should have played better than us to win.But they DIDN'T win, they choked!Doesn't everyone say that about us? It's hard to believe we won that, so many errors, missing marks, missing goals,so so disappointing, what has happened to Buddy's kicking?, etc.IF they don't pull up their socks next Saturday, they will be pummelled. When you look at the game, there were so many of our players that did not do their job. I was happy with Murphy,he played well, great mark he took, which could have been another winning goal for the crows.Too many of our players, let us down! You could make a list of players that were disappointing, but I hope they come good. There aren't too many players in the swans who don't give 100%.We have to play 150% better to win..We only gave 50% on Saturday. Not good enough!

Does anyone know if Gunston has any backline experience, I can't help but think a Gunston/Shoenmakers straight switch would potentially be on the cards (maybe something Clarko is holding close to his chest). I saw Shoey going forward earlier in the year, and he played most of his junior footy forward, so maybe Clarko was holding out on it?

I know Roughy's played a bit back as well, and Ellis, if he gets up or Hodge can both play reasonably tall.

Did anyone else see Ellis 3-man-up on Saturday? Made a good tap-out.

Okay, confession time.. The closeness of the prelim is my fault.

You see, last week, gripped by finals fever, I bought a playstation and on Saturday before the game I played as Hawthorn Vs Adelaide. But being new to the game, I was bloody dismal at set shots and sprayed them all over the place. Suffice to say, I still won (by 7 points, not 5) but with more points than goals.

Rest assured, yesterday I smashed Sydney with a brilliant display of run and carry through the middle and accurate goal kicking. Gunston kicked 7, Buddy 6.

Apologies for the scare guys, but we'll be right this week.

No no no, please no. Fixing the perceived problem of a forward flank playing as a full back by replacing him with another forward flank!? Surely not.

I'm not saying for a full game, but maybe a pinch switch-up

Hodge sweeper across the HFB. He must be there.
Unfortunatley either Murphy, Savage or even Ellis may miss. Puopolo is very luck he has some credits in the bank. His pressure on Saturday was woeful. He must lift and put more pressure on the ball carrier out of defence. Adelaide were cruising out of there through the corridor.

The way I see it, the thing we are most vulnerable to, above all else, is teams with at least one massive power forward who can mark and kick straight. The Cows have 2, and that's why they troubled us. That's why Geelong trouble us, and why Cloke kicked a bag on us in a losing side. The Swans aren't really like that. NOT saying their forward line is rubbish, it certainly ain't. But Reid is going to be a gun, but isn't there yet. Goodes is obviously one of the all time greats, but isn't a true specialist forward, and goes up the ground a bit. Pike has been a revelation, but is still learning the game, and is still unlikely to take control and kick a bag. LRT is a backman who can have spells in the forward line with strong effect, but he's no Hawkins or Tex.
That's what I'm holding onto anyway.

I'm confident our backline can hold up alright against their forwards, especially if we can throw either Hodge or Guerra (or both) back in the mix. The key is how we play through the midfield (surprise, surprise). I doubt very much we will allow them the same freedom as the Crows had to move the ball through the middle of the ground. As long as we get our share of the ball going forward and don't allow Kennedy, Jack, Bolton etc to dominate the clearances, then I think we can get the win.

Is it too late to do something to Shoenmakers?
Maybe play Roughhead back instead? He offered little up forward tonight with his mark fluffing. Still was pretty good in the ruck but anything would be a better option to having Shoenmakers play someone else into form.

you seem to forget how good he has been over the last month or so...cut the kid some slack in my view

Partially agree. Not sure i'd put Tex in the power forward category. I thought we allowed them way too much space to lead into. Did we work back hard enough?? They got space even when the Crows made a very deliberate entry inside 50. Very rare from the Hawks this year- hopefully an aberation.
I dont expect Reid et al to have the same influence though. Will be a ding dong midfield battle.

The set ups will be interesting as the Swans don't need more time in their forward line over the course of the game to win. I have seen it a few times this year where they lose the clearance in the centre and if there is no clear mark in their defence they are able to stifle clean possession until there is a quick release by hand to some one bursting out of the defensive 50.

From there they have guys like jetta waiting for the kick over the zones and then either spot up someone up field on there own or try to sprint forward and try to kick the goal ala Friday night. I read the Hun today and they are pretty much describing this perfectly as the 'Slingshot'.

Maybe some of you posters can clear this up for me, but didn't we hear/read that Clarko's Game Plan attempted to minimise this sort of tactic?

Cheers:thumbsu:

You must be watching a different Hawthorn, 6 gaols to cloke, 4 to tippet and beaten by Kennedy/darling in the final home and away game, this is not good form, but he is our only option for centre half back so we have to back him in. With hodge back and murphy ( who played well against the crows) we just have to double team Schoenmakers man. Every club has a player that is the 23/24 best player in their side, with most clubs that player is a flanker or a pocket type player, unfortunately for us that player is our key position defender and he is comming up against star players every week, the caoches need to have a plan to cover our weaknesses, schoey is what he is, not evey hawthorn key defender can be a Mew or a Langford, however come 5.30 pm next saturday Sshoey will be a premiership centre half back.

Don't know. But we did not get "slingshotted" at the SCG. Main issue was when we lost clearances early

Now put it away until next week

Shoemakers must play. He is far too important for our structure. Clarkson has some responsibility here. If Ryan struggles during the game he has refused to make a move. He needs to shuffle the backline when things are not going well. We have Roughead and possibly Gunston who could have gone back against Adelaide.

On team selection, go with the team that has got us to this point. Therefore -

Out: Ellis, Murphy
In: Hodge, Guerra

I'm also tempted to select Bailey or Gilham but I doubt it will happen. Clarkson has shown his preference for going small.

Kennedy, Goodes & O'Keefe are our biggest challenges. I'd have Burgoyne, Gibson & Shiels start on each player respectively.

I know I am bragging in here today, the Capital of the Wimmera where I live, have won their Tenth Premiership from 2003-2012 every year..Very proud of them, the Horsham Demons, defeated the Warracknabeal Eagles by 47 pts..I guess none are interested but it's a great feeling when you live here!:DHope they make it eleven next year..
