It’s not just DRS. The 3rd umpire in general takes up so much time in international cricket which is part of the reason why no one can ever reach 90.

DRS - 3 reviews each minimum, and you get blokes late in the innings reviewing decisions that are absolutely plumb just because they’ve got a review left so they might as well use it.

Every ball now gets checked for front foot no balls, meaning more are being called and re-delivered.

Just about any runout chance that is even remotely close gets sent to the 3rd umpire to review. Umpires should be making a decision on field and it can be reviewed in the background while the batter walks off.

Any catch that’s close to the ground gets a frame by frame analysis to make sure it was a legal catch.

Any ball that lands close to the toblerone gets a frame by frame analysis too.

These are all little things that add up, and that’s without mentioning the batters taking the piss with drinks breaks after every over and needing new gloves every 2 overs.

There's certainly a number of things in there that hold up play and this does contribute to the overall problem. The ICC needs to look at ways to complete things in the background in order to save time and ensure as many overs as possible are bowled in a day.

The constant interruptions for the batters is one thing that can be avoided. Consistently changing gloves, running out drinks and other similar interludes needs to be reduced significantly. A good example of this was at the end of day two when there was about five or six minutes left in the day and India wasted approximately two or three minutes with drinks and a physio visit. This resulted in only one over being bowled when there would have been enough time to start the second over prior to the close of play.

Streamlining play a bit more and reducing the need for non-essential interruptions has to be the next option that the ICC needs to take in order to speed up the game a bit and ensure we see a full day's play. I'd also like to see the umpires take more of a stance on these interruptions and reduce them down to only essential ones.

The fielding team also need to have some focus placed on them as well. Yes, there are interruptions, some of which can't be avoided, but taking five minutes or longer to bowl an over isn't acceptable.

How many games end up as 5 day draws these days (without rain delays which would reduce overs anyway)? I don't see a problem, given lots if Tests struggle to get to day 4.

Not many, because the balance of bat and ball has reached a point of equilibrium again with the game being much better off for it.

Aside from that, for anyone who attends a game and sees 82 overs for example instead of 90 with no weather interruptions has every reason to be upset that they've paid for a product and only seen just over 90% of what they were promised.

Shield matches usually end up several overs short too.

They do, but the for the most part teams are bowling 96 overs a day or very close to it.

Why Dont We Have Both GIF

I for one hope the Sydney Thunder go winless this season
To clarify, I don't have an issue with Konstas playing over Bancroft (on form it makes sense)

More the entitlement of David Warner that he gets to pick who "he" wants to bat with.

Maybe some bad blood over sandpaper gate.

A good captain would say something like "We have several good options for opening and we'll work through them".

He's virtually thrown Bancroft under the bus.
I hope they play him but wouldn't be surprised if he's left out.
