It was a grim, dark struggle back in those days.

I remember being so hopeful on the day of the '89 GF, believing, knowing we had GAS on our side, and thinking how the club's fortunes could turn around if only we could win.

It was a bitter result.

I remember sitting back after the game and despondently thinking 'if not now, when??'

In retrospect, we were up against the last generational side of the VFL, with far superior depth over the park.

I mean, our last line was Malekellis, Darcy and Bos. Theirs was Collins, Langford and Ayres.
