On the contrary, there have been alot more than in the early 00's when the athletic phaze was taking over...

Green certainly has something special.

He'd almost be my no.1 preference at the compensation pick.

He is very very similar to Leigh Adams in alot of ways, clearance and contested ball winning machine, except he has speed similar to that of Brent Harvey.

Hmmm, lets look at last years draft.

Adelaide: No sub 180cm players taken.
Brisbane: Callum Bartlett at (179cm)
Carlton: none
Collingwood: Josh Thomas (178cm)
Essendon: Travis Colyer (175cm)
Fremantle: none
Geelong: Allen Christensen (176cm)
Hawthorn: recycled Rhan Hooper (177cm)
Melbourne: none
North: none
Port: none
Richmond: Ben Nason (179cm)
Saints: none
Sydney: Byron Sumner (174cm)
Eagles: none
Bulldogs: Tutt (176cm)

I was surprised that many were taken. I think Nason and Hooper were the only ones that got any real game time.

This was the issue with my brother in law's nephew, he is what is considered midfielder size now but he had to play key positions in the TAC because there are so many short people in the juniors and a lot of them have speed, good skills, so few get taken at AFL level because their size is often a big setback. Some guys in the high 170s might not be too far off some in the low 180s but I think especially in the 175cm and below it is a huge difference if they line up on someone like the size of Pendlebury.

I am not anti-small. I was preaching we should take Harbrow in the 08 draft i think it was, he was eventually taken as a rookie. But a lot of small guys get overlooked just because of size, you really have to show something special.

As long as we steer clear of sub 180cm coaches, I don't care who we draft, as long as they're the best available (and I rate Isaac Smith highly).

So, reading between the lines here, you think we should take Isaac with pick 17! Wow this demands a whole new thread I reckon.

IF he's considered best available at that pick, yes I do. BUT, I reckon the club would be considering him for our end of first round compo pick.

Barlett wouldn've went top 10 if it wasnt for his knee recos, josh thomas should end up being a very good Footballer, Travis Colyer is a gun (I agree with pykie's comparisons with boomer)...Christensen done well in the VFL for Geelong and probably would've got gametime at other clubs... It pisses me off how many natural 'pure' footballers get overlooked just because they are short. Andrew Hooper also went to the dogs last year and he will be a very good footballer.

Yeah I agree. Hope I wasn't outa line with that crack about a new thread. I've been so impressed with Isaac that, although 17 probably out of the question , our next pick may be about right. Mind you, King Valley Shiraz is very influential.

Nah mate, not outta line. All's good. Yeah well you and I both rate him highly. Freo have a pick in the 20's and they've already hosted him in Freo for a day, showing him the facilities etc. I doubt they'd do that for a guy they rate a second rounder. IF our club's as keen as you and I then we may well have to use pick 17. I personally don't have a problem if we did.

If Caddy, Smith (Brodie), Pitt, Atley ot Harper are around our pick, I'd be pretty shattered if we picked up young Isaac. I wouldnt be risking a first round pick on a VFL player who has only play 6-7 senior matches, regardless of how good they were.

We'll agree to disagree. I'm not one to fall in love with kiddies I've only seen on YouPorn clips playing in junior games. What I've seen of Smith, at senior level and in big games, I like.............alot. The fact he's coming from where he is means little, other than he'll be coming the unconventional route from a junior to an AFL player.

How he compares to those you mention, in the eyes of clubs' recruitment managers (including ours) is what's important.

Hey, it's all about opinions. I bet there'd be recruitment managers, possibly ours included, who think exactly the same as you r_f08. Whomever we end up drafting will be the best thing since sliced bread anyway eh?

Too true TT. One thing is for certain The youtube clips of younger players can definately be misleading! I honestly think that the recruiters will rate Smith very highly. He has come from obscurity and he has really has burst onto the scene, but like many players before him that bubble can burst very quickly, and thats more the reason why i have my doubts. Its nothing against what he has done or his potential. (I rate him very highly, just not top 20)

In a perfect world he'll be available at the end of round one, and we'll snare him AND one of those you mentioned. I suspect those responsible for making the selections will be reading the tea leaves on who else likes him and at what pick.

If we manage to snare Harper/Atley with Pick 17 and Isaac/Pitt with the Compo, our chances to become serious contenders in the next few years will become even more convincing. :thumbsu:

I really hope Atley slides. He just has something about him as a footballer that appeals to me but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Having watched GR's highlights of the VFL Grand Final, Isaac Smith is going to make a club very happy. So clean below his knees, and explosive pace.. complete wildcard.

please correct me if im wrong, but i read in the hun that nth's picks were 17,69,71,and a couple of 3 digit picks, did we trade the 32 to gold coast for cam richardson ??????

Traded pick 35 to the GC,didn't ever have 32. These lists of draft picks don't seem to be including the compo picks as it's unknown exactly where they'll be because they don't have to be used for 5 years. We'll definitely use the one we got from Hawthorn for Hale though. It's at the end of the first round and will likely be 28-30.

I thought so too, Groucho.

So we've got 17, compo pick (which we may or may not use, but probably will) and two late picks?

Sorry mate, you lost me last year when you compared Travis Colyer to Brent Harvey.

I never straight up compare draftee's to established players.

When I compare them, they are merely as an indication of their style of play for those that havn't been able to see them.

Not their relative ability.

Who else would you compare a line-breaking, 175cm, outside midfielder, like Colyer, in the AFL with?

I think he will end up with Jayden Pitt at Pick 17, but if we pass on one of Tom Lynch or Jack Darling to get Pitt I will not be a happy man.

It will be interesting to see what Lewis does if he is in the predicament of deciding between a mid like Pitt/Harper or a KPF that slips particularly Lynch. A Forward line of Hansen, Black and Lynch would be absolutely lethal, and would also allow Lachie to go back if needed as well as Black play around the ground.

C - Anthony - Swallow - Pitt
FOLL - Goldstein - Ziebell - Cunnington

Or

HF - Warren - Hansen - Black
FF - Thomas - Lynch - Adams

I have no clue what i'd choose hahaha.

Cannot f***ing wait for draft day.

Sam Crocker would be a decent pick up for the compo pick: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/101749/default.aspx

Tom Hickey could be a good candidate for the developing ruckman Bon has suggested at 69. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/102184/default.aspx

I quite like this guy at either pick 69 if we decide not to go for a ruckman or as a rookie. A mix between Matty Campbell and Crize Garlett: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/102347/default.aspx

Gee, Sam Crocker doesn't mind pumping his own tyres, does he? That Hodge comparison says it all. Not a bad prospect by the look of it.

Living in Melbourne and not supporting any team is also somewhat unusual.
