Awful lot of comments around from people that almost certainly don't know the reasons behind it all.

I've got a feeling we might have dodged a bullet.
It's a bit of a worry that he just might not be cut out for being a professional footballer.

So they said on the news that besides him losing 9kg (which is a real worry) that Cam may play WAFL football. I would imagine it would have to be okayed by GWS but maybe playing for the mighty South Freo Bulldogs and living at home may help with his problems. I hope he can overcome his issues and get back to enjoying life again. Whether he plays for an AFL team again is irrelevant in the grander scheme of things, mental health is much more important. Get well soon, Cam.

By not having to trade for him?

Well yes, but also not having him on the list. Both our club and especially GWS would know a lot more than me, but let's face it ditching your club before the season starts when you still have 2 years to run on your contract opens up the possibility (even probability) that he just doesn't like being an AFL footballer.

Let's not pretend he loves Freo so much that he'd sacrifice it all to end up here. I'm guessing whatever offer we had on the table (both for trade and his remuneration) will be significantly reduced at the end of the season.

He may wish for nothing more than being an AFL footballer but have things which are preventing him from fulfilling his wishes.

Losing 9kgs in 8 weeks for an athlete with very low body fat is fuc.king serious shit, that's muscle and meat he is losing. Very dangerous.

GWS came out of this looking really bad, I mean they had a press conference with the CEO and coach to try and spin it. The CEO is doing media rounds on radio to try and control the message.

The word "depression" was never mentioned but he does imply it. If I was Colin Young I would get Cam's mother to go on radio and rant, that would be Game, Set, Match for Young winning the PR battle and finally shut GWS up and take player welfare seriously.

Nowhere to hide for GWS and the AFL once a mother speaks outs, ask Essendon.

The report I heard on Seven was from Adrian Barich, so it might be half true, at most.
I await a further statement from GWS or McCarthy's management.

Did Colin Young think to advise CM before he signed a contract extension to hold off and wait and see what Fremantle offer? He surely must have known about a desire to come home before he signed. CY is a dumb arse if you ask me.
Umm, maybe he wasn't homesick in April 2014, and maybe freo hadn't spoken to anyone about him given he hadn't played a game yet and all...?

Not sure if you can accuse GWS of not caring for Cam's welfare. All clubs are very aware of player welfare and GWS have been quite supportive to Cam. The fact is Cam is contracted and GWS do not have to trade him. He can take all the extended leave he wants but he is their player.

Obviously it will become a topic of conversation during the next trade period but until then all we can do is wait. No amount of "GWS don't care about cam" is going to get him here any quicker, in fact I think it would only make GWS more resolved to dig in their heels.

Supportive? Hardly. They have repeatedly shown a flippant attitude towards his welfare. Putting words (lies) in his mouth about how he was happy in Sydney. Not flying him to Perth when GWS played at Subi. Continual spin doctor PR statements. Refusing to trade him when it was clearly a massive issue that they wouldn't accept. And by not trading him it's actually a fact that they haven't shown genuine care for his welfare, just looking after their own interests. That shit club holds a large amount of blame for the current situation.

There are a whole host of personal issues it could be other than depression. It could be a sick family member, girlfriend problems or any number of things. It's a bit presumptuous to assume a) it's mental illness and b) it's GWS' fault for not treating it properly.

Yep, it's awesome he got a serious mental illness :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:
Mental illness is a fact of life and I felt as though the interests of the young man were not being considered, so I had an inkling something like this would happen. Its like playing someone with a minor leg injury (homesickness) and they do a serious leg injury (depression).

Can he play for South Freo this year with GWS' permission but still remain on their list?
Exploring all possibilities here!

May as well get it done and get him playing with Peel and learning Freos structures for 2017... Jokes obviously.

Bad news for Cam, bad news for GWS, bad news for AFL.

Whoever could of seen this coming?

I love the comments from some of the hypocritical Eagle supporters out there who don't seem to understand that half of their list is made up of home sick mummy's boys that wanted to go home.

There's obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge but if he is permitted to play WAFL, Peel may be a possibility. Happy to be corrected but my understanding is that there is a points system in place for WAFL lists, with those coming from the AFL being worth a chunk of these points. Swan Districts have lost Ryan Crowley and Peel lost Leroy Jetta. Maybe these two clubs will have some space. With it being so close to the start of the season, it wouldn't surprise me if many other WAFL clubs were near the total point allocation.

Of course, I may have absolutely no idea how the point system works...

Not sure how the points system works either, but if McCarthy plays for South Freo, that might count for something in terms of having a low points rating because it was his original club. I doubt he's going to be allowed to play for Freo's seconds ... I'm sure GWS would kick up a stink about that.
