Depression (if it's that) is a horrific epidemic affecting scores of young men across the country at the moment.

The research (or lack thereof) doesn't accurately reflect those levels. I imagine his present circumstances wouldn't be helping said depression (if it's that).

His health is the priority - not the needs of a selfish Football club or the desires of an opposition supporter base.

Hope he gets well

(if it's that)

McCarthy was demanding 750k/season last year from reports. Next year, we could sign him for far less than that considering he is potentially out for this season, the difference can go towards Hogans deal.

So we I think this is how the next 24 months work out for us list management wise.

McCarthy - trade 2016 1st rounder
Hooker - sign as FA
Hogan - trade anything bar Hill, Fyfe, Neale

Then we win 3 premierships.

GWS have just released a statement that Cam has been granted extended leave for personal reasons.

I would also like to add that his welfare was'nt of concern to them a couple of months ago.

And now they say he cant cope with demands of the AFL !!! Stupid GWS Mgt - accept the blame and move on

I see 2 of thoose 3 occuring - just one precaution Hooker should not delay the development of our young backmen - I.e. collins, pearce etc

Not sure if you can accuse GWS of not caring for Cam's welfare. All clubs are very aware of player welfare and GWS have been quite supportive to Cam. The fact is Cam is contracted and GWS do not have to trade him. He can take all the extended leave he wants but he is their player.

Obviously it will become a topic of conversation during the next trade period but until then all we can do is wait. No amount of "GWS don't care about cam" is going to get him here any quicker, in fact I think it would only make GWS more resolved to dig in their heels.

I would be happy trading a first rounder for Cam, but imagine if he doesn't play any senior footy this year and his value drops to a second rounder?

We could potentially have Bennell, McCarthy and Hooker for 2 second rounders.

I wouldn't be too triumphant, there are 2 clubs in WA who would be in the market for McCarthy so we still won't get him for nothing.

Whatever contributed to his current predicament is less relevant than finding how to get on top of it.
Similarly his immediate playing future is secondary.
Hope it gets resolved reasonably promptly and he comes out of whatever it is healthy and positive.

What a mess this whole thing is. I'm sure the GWSplayers have really welcomed Cam back into the fold. Going public with his desire to return home and basically telling his team mates he didn't want to play with them was a poor decision and bad advice.

The past month or two has probably been really tough.

Classic case of a club putting it's needs before those of the player. They could have got something valuable in a trade now he'll go anyway at end of season and GWS haven't got a leg to stand on. Did they really think McCarthy would be good value for them this year? A player is never going to give his best if his heart isn't in it even if he plays.

source? My understanding is that he wasn't asking for much anyway.
His manager said on trade radio that there was no luring offer from Freo. Those who had the foundation of their anti-McCarthy campaign rooted in the mythical $700,000 a year tweet from Jay Clark quickly dismissed it as a lie. I maintain that number was circulated by GWS to turn the public against him.

He just needed to get home.

I got a reliable source that the offer was $650,000 a season for three years.

I'd be wanting out too if I walked out of my front door to this after most weekends

Would just be an act of kindness to rehome the guy :D:D:D

Jokes aside, I do hope he gets past this and has a successful and rewarding career.....whever he ends up playing (except west coast) Best wishes for the young man
