How does that effect the US economy?

The costs are passed on to the consumer.

What does this do?

Increase inflation?

What does that do?

Higher interest rates.

Thats the balancing act and he will be judged on that in 4 years time again.

The impact of tariffs is to create more jobs and bring back manufacturing, creating jobs makes for a stronger economy and has social positives also but the trade off is what you correctly note

Any leader should have the conviction to do what is in the best interests of his or her nation and I think Trump has been given a mandate to do that.

Whatever he does and in this case increase tariffs for imports he is doing it in the best interest for the nation he represents.
Is there anyone here who actually understands the economy or economics at all.

Increased tarrifs significantly increases costs to Americans therefore increases inflation.

Countries who the tarrifs who are applied to do not pay the tarrifs.

Do you think Elon Musk will bring all of his Tesla production back from China or will his company be exempt having small production in th US.

What companies came back to the US during Orange Man's last time in office? Give you a clue none.

Not one of his so called economic policies help the average American, not a one.

Replace Income tax with Tarrifs, one of the dumbest comments of all time. just make sure your countries Health, education, transport, affordability drops to 3rd world level.

He has sent multiple businesses broke, built nothing in his life and none of what he says about the economy under his watch was true.

The guy is an idiot, those who voted for him are idiots those here trying to defend non existent Or failed policies .......

Seriously provide one bit of evidence or at least some economic qualifications that increasing tarrifs does any of this!!!!!

In case you would like to know have worked in Financial Services for over 30 years am.pos.post graduate qualified in economics so would love to see your evidence

Pugz I don't agree with many of the political views you've expressed here but I admire the way you have weathered the slings and arrows and stayed calm in this thread. I'd probably have walked away by now.

Congrats on your man (or perhaps your preferred party?) getting up. I hope it goes well for the USA and especially for the many disaffected and disadvantaged people who changed sides and voted Trump. I have grave doubts but I'll be watching with considerable interest over the next 4 years.
I don't need congratulations, but thanks.
I understand it's polarising, but I feel like respectful discourse can lead to progress.
Before I cancelled Foxtel, I'd often watch CNN and MSNBC to get their perspectives. I do think it's very tribal and people back their side no matter, sometimes blindly.

I thought offering a conservative insight might be worthwhile in this thread. Some may value it, it seems many don't though. And that's ok.

Thanks for the respect DW, appreciate it.

and jt goes without saying that obviously I hope Trump's election leads to a better life for everyone, first and foremost.

Congratulations Pugz. I well researched and experienced debate where you have ‘weathered a storm’ of common sense arguments and questions without proving a single researched point of refute. Embarrassing.

Let Trump bring us peace and prosperity.

Good work cobber.
Settle BD.

He didn't get Trump elected. He was just a long-distance observer like the rest of us. He happens to think it'll be a good thing which many of us strongly disagree with, but it's his right, even if he can't or won't answer many of the questions raised. I'm glad he stayed the journey. It's OK to engage and question. But if we shout him down (and out) then we are the poorer for it because we lose an opportunity to understand what drives people to think and act and vote differently.

I happen to think Trump will be a disaster, especially for the climate which ultimately will be the only thing that matters (according to dogwatch's hierarchy of needs).

There's another important issue for us in Australia and that is to understand the politics of disaffection and alienation. If we don't get a better handle on that we will end up going down the same path as the USA. Dealing with inequality is a big one for me, but not everyone agrees. Neither of our major parties are doing much on that front. Big business has them both in their pocket (as they do in the USA) and will continue to dictate policies that widen the gap between the top 10% and the bottom 60%.

Much more qualified than me I will stop way out my league

Sorry I won’t embarrass myself with what I do

Don't go around touting surface-level GOP talking points and opposing Dem policies if you are going to pull the "does it matter" card when someone asks for even a slightly detailed list of the views you support backed by facts/evidence.

The wall "practical". Ha. Did you also think it was practical for him to try and make Mexico pay for it too. Right now that wall is in the same status as his medical plan replacement for Obama care.

"Energy independent." Another false claim. [https://www.forbes.com/sites/rrapie...nce-soars-to-highest-levels-in-over-70-years/]

The GOP wants to install Voter ID as a mandatory feature with the purpose of it being voter suppression. You cannot argue in good faith that it is being proposed in order to combat "voter fraud", which is such an incredibly insignificant thing according to known statistics (between 0.0003 percent and 0.0025 percent): [https://www.brennancenter.org/sites.../Briefing_Memo_Debunking_Voter_Fraud_Myth.pdf]

Just come out and admit what you are: someone who acts like they know what they are talking about but really knows jack shit.

After 8 years I do not have the time, patience or energy to deal with barnacles on the arse of progress like yourself in a civil manner.
don't bother, the swiss cheese logic is blindingly obvious

For a longer term view, can we at least try and get buddy-buddy with China and get on their side instead of USA?

At least when the inevitable happens, China could protect Australia instead of being the ones invading it.

Trump’s death of natural causes, quickly would be good.
That's one of my fears. I am concerned what it'd be like under President JD Vance.
There's a chance (admittedly small) that the Republicans have now worked out how to wrangle Trump. Vance would be a different type of loose cannon. Or puppet, if that's the way it works.

In a way the Republicans winning the House, the Senate, the Presidency and the Popular Vote might be therapeutic. If life is better for your rustbelt battler in 4 years time then feel free to bump this post. But if it's not there will be no excuses for the Republicans and the battlers will have to find another champion.

And he Trump will be judged on his performance especially with regards to the economy

A mandate to destroy the country by people like those here who have no understanding on the impact economically will have to middle class and below in America is no mandate if people voting have no understanding

You are entitled to opinions, truth be told IF I was American and could vote I would be a traditional Republican voter.

This version elected are not Republican, their economic credentials would be written in crayon and the Democrats were an embarrassment putting Biden up as the alternative until it was too late

I'm good. I've spent the last 4 years with some grace. I can spend the next 4 with some optimism the US is heading in the right direction. It's done. If you want to see where I sit on things happy for you to go back in time and look at the posts.

But it's done. Hey, here's a good news story for you. Trump's only got 4 more years. Then he's out.

The pixel 8 reply is an automated one. Again thanks for the insult. Typical.
