Richmond are were they deserve to be
They have beaten teams they should beat and more often then not fallen short against teams of a better quality
We have had some decent wins (West Coast, Freo and Port were good wins) however we have also had a favourable draw and low injury list
Tony Shaw is partially right but hes also a Richmond hating F*%^ like the majority of the media.
We are a middle of the road side trying to work our way up to a top 4 side. It's a struggle when drafts are compromised ect. To date since the process began (2009) Hardwick and Co have a done a reasonable job but there is still much improvment and hard decisions to be made. For the purposes of discussion I will list them
1. Players below AFL Standard: Still up to 10 on the list so a mini-clean out is required at years end. Some of these players already play at Coburg and seem to have had papers stamped
2. Forward Line: Still need another target. Vickery is progressing but will never be the CHF to take a game apart (Hopefully his ruck work gets to a level where he is a ruck-foward isntead of a forward-ruck). A.Edwards is stopgap and as for Mcguane see point 1
3. Defence: 3rd Tall is an issue. Pettard playing a role but has not cemented the spot. Grimes always injured. Batchelor see point 1. Rance suited to flank and intercepting play but against the top sides forced to take on Gorillas.
4. Gameplan: Movement of the ball into the forward line still an issue. Too many mistakes and dont capitalise enough on stoppage dominance when we have momentum
5. Conversion: On the whole it is terrible. Dustin Martin has a great year but has basically kicked himself out of AA Contention because of his conversion rate.
6. Depth: Depth in terms of first 22 is the best its been in a while, but depth below if injuries hit is non existent
My advice is ignore the biased media and form your own opinion.

mate dw about it, Richmond is never good enough even if we beat sydney and hawthorn they will always try and find something bad to say about us. Us Richmond supporters are the only ones who know where we are at, dont let heck wits get to you

I'd suggest most Tiger supporters would agree with you re last year v this year, but the fact of the matter is that compared to the same time last year we've won 4 more games. While we haven't beaten the Swans or Hawthorn (level teams) so far we also haven't lost to the Suns and we've beaten the Blues. To me it currently looks like we've gone up a notch, but in doing so have ironed out not only the troughs but also a few peaks. It'll be interesting to see how we shape up in the next 6 games, and if there has been a change in strategy to peak late in the season rather than early (as happened the last 2 years).

In the first 10 weeks we had Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Essendon, and traveled for Freo (Subi) Port (AAMI) Eagles (Subi) after that we had the Crows and North and return Freo game, all tough games, and had to fly to Cairns an play the much improved GC.
We only get to play Melbourne and GWS once (and the Suns once) and still yet to play GWS
I would say anything but favourable.
should we go through the draws that we have been given the last couple of years? i think this draw makes up for it big time lol
To this point of the season you have had 5 games against the bottom 4.
As an example, North have had 3. We would have loved St Kilda and Bulldogs in round 2 and 3 rather than Geelong and Sydney. But as AFL policy has stated, teams that made the 8 last year got tougher draws this year. and vise versa.
Once again, you have an easyish draw. Nothing to be ashamed of. you had a shocker last year. Much like North this year.

Agree, we are still not a genuine contender for the flag but 2013 was never about that - it was to make the finals which we look like doing. Not sure why we keep getting talked about not beating anyone of note when our main priority this year was to finish in the 8 (and not take a few scalps but ultimately miss out like last year).
Also, you're having a laugh on the bold bit. Yes we still need further development from some of our best 22 or maybe a few more additions this offseason but we definitely don't need 12 new players to take the next step. If you disagree, please name the 12 in our best 22 who need to be moved on in order to become a top 4 contender in the next 1-2 years.

Freo have beaten 2 (and a draw) I think. To be fair, they only have four teams above them to choose from where Richmond have 5 (for only 2 wins).

When Richmond people hear, "You haven't beaten anyone," we think they're saying, "And so don't deserve to be in the 8." But if they mean, "You haven't shown you can challenge for the flag," we would agree.

Bottom line, who gives a shit. We are playing finals and who knows what can happen. From the base we have started from we have shown real gradual improvement. IMO we are actually playing finals a year before I thought we would.
Can't believe no one jumped on this sooner. The thing with Richmond is, you have a selection of confirmed spuds, then a group of spuds who appear as spuds seemingly every second week.

Richmond still have way too many "almost there" players to ever realistically challenge for a flag.
Richmond must be doing pretty well to have eight duds playing for them and still making the finals. And by the way, it's way too early to say that guys like Arnott are spuds, and Rance and Vickery? Tad harsh mate.
As for the rest? Eh, either they're solid players or fringe. Jackson was a dud last year, this year he's been playing decent footy. With 18 teams, no club is going to be full of superstars. And luckily for guys like Vickery, Arnott and Rance, they have time on their side.

Daniel Jackson a confirmed spud? Obviously haven't watched us play the last 4 weeks mate. He still has issues with his decision making and disposal but his hardness at the ball and man more than make up for it. Beat Ablett 2 weeks ago and that guy goes alright.
Vickery has had 12 contested marks the last month. Still lacks intent at the contest at times but is tracking along more than fine for a bloke who is still 2-3 years away from entering his prime. Arnott is a 2nd year bloke who's as hard as you'll find (ask Rory Thompson's ribs...)
Rance get beaten up occasionally by bigger blokes (Cloke, Petrie). However, his ability to read the play/ intercept marking is superb. He was BOG for mine on the weekend and is one of the more underrated backmen in the league. The addition of Chaplin has meant he can line up on 2nd/3rd talls more which is what he is suited to.
North did pretty well last year and made finals too...
Note how Richmond are yet to play Hawthorn or Sydney yet this year, only play them and the Cats/Pies once.
As for Arnott, Rance and Vickery...
Arnott - Hard nut with shocking disposal, a short Daniel Jackson for mine.
Rance - Ok one week, horrendous the next, rarely seems to kick the ball forwards, often sideways/backwards, panics with ball in hand almost more than anyone else in the league
Vickery - High draft pick who has shown very, very small flashes, and usually against the weak sides, and especially against St Kilda, a team without a genuine KPD. Picked up because his old man is boxing coach at the club.
I think this says more about your other players than Jackson himself mate.
Takes more than 4 weeks to make a player, champ.
The Richmond fans praising McGuane as a "legitimate" 3rd tall have seemingly disappeared since his 4 week burst to open the year...

Couple of wins, I believe? Presumably footy stays the same every year though, so you're absolute locks to beat them again this year...

But Vickery is a spud now (he's not) so he'll always be a spud. Jackson has been poo up until this year so we can assume he is still poo and ignore his 2013 form. This is your logic isn't it...
