Two months later we still have the same six in the elite category for their ages:

22 - Gulden (1st)
23 - Warner (4th)
24 - Blakey (4th), Rowbottom (5th)
28 - Heeney (1st)
30 - Grundy (5th)

Consistency!
Three months later and we have five of the same six still ranked elite for their ages:

22 - Gulden (2nd)
23 - Warner (5th)
24 - Rowbottom (2nd), Blakey (4th)
28 - Heeney (1st)

Grundy's dropped out, but that's probably no surprise to anyone.

I thought I'd have a look at how our talls compared to other top 8 sides.

My calculations were a little crude, and I included / ommitted players based on my knowledge of who should be included (which is definitely incomplete given I don't know every team inside out so may have included / ommitted players unfairly).

If there's anything I should change let me know and I'm happy to revise it.

Other things worth mentioning:

  1. Including Hayden McLean may make our stats look a little worse given he plays a fair bit of time in the ruck, bringing his total goals down compared to most other forwards included here. In saying that, removing McLean doesn't make it look much more favourable when comparing to other sides where I've listed only 2 key forwards (see 2nd image).
  2. Not all players have played every game, so that impacts the stats.
  3. Some teams have 3 talls, some have 2, so not all stats are comparable across all teams.

I had a post in 2021 re free kicks in grand finals with Victorian clubs v Interstate teams.

Using https://afltables.com/afl/teams/allteams/gfgames.html for the last 27 years.

The 6 grand finals Sydney have played in, the only time we won the free kick differential was:
  • 1996 we lost to North
  • 2005 we beat West Coast Eagles for the flag
  • 2012 we beat Hawthorn for the flag
  • 2022 we lost to Geelong

The biggest difference in free kicks (greater than 10) involved Sydney (we won 1, lost 1)
  • 2016 Footscray 20, Sydney 8 (winner +12)
  • 2012 Sydney 10, Hawthorn 21 (winner -11)

When a Victorian team plays a Victorian team (9 times) (Vic/Vic)
- the only time the premiers had more free kicks was:
  • 2010 Collingwood (the replay)
  • 2021 Melbourne (but GF not at MCG)

When a Victorian team beats interstate team (9 times) (Vic/IS)
  • only once did the losing interstate team win more free kicks
  • 1996 North 8, Sydney 11.
  • 2023 Collingwood

When an interstate team plays another interstate team (IS/IS)
  • there have been only 3 grand finals (2004-2006)
  • Sydney and WCE played in 2 of them
  • the winning differential was 1, -1, -4

When an interstate team beats a Victorian team (7 times) (IS/Vic)
  • the losing Victorian team won more free kicks except once in 2001 (Brisbane 22 Essendon 19).

Note:
1. Geelong was considered a Victorian team
2. Only used free kick counts for the Collingwood St Kilda replay

Some random tidbits that a stats boffin I chat with on Twitter said I could share on here...

Joel Amartey averaged more goals from rounds 0-13 (1.83) before his bag of 9 than he did from rounds 14-GF (1.62) which included his bag of 9.

Errol Gulden kicked 8 more goals than James Rowbottom this year. Both Chad Warner & Isaac Heeney more than doubled what Errol Gulden kicked, meaning Gulden's goal tally for the year was closer to Rowbottom's than it was Warner or Heeney's.

Six Swans players averaged 1 possession directly from a hitout per game this year. Caleb Mitchell was one of them.

Luke Parker and James Jordon averaged the most centre clearances per CBA, at a strike rate of over 16 each.

There was a greater difference between the players second and third for most bounces this year (29) than there was between Chad Warner and second place (31).

Caiden Cleary's contested possession rate of 47.1% was the highest for a first-year Swan since 2020.

Only two midfielders in the competition - Tom Liberatore & Patrick Cripps - had a higher disposal efficiency than James Rowbottom (69.7%) from a contested possession rate equal to or higher than his (53.7%).

Nick Blakey, playing in defence, averaged more score launches than Isaac Heeney, playing as our number one clearance midfielder.

Tom Papley had the highest average marks on the lead of all Swans players. We were one of only three teams (Collingwood & Melbourne the others) to not be led by a key forward in this area.
