Tesla owner I spoke to..has it on a lease.

35,000 km
Saving $10,000 in servicing and fuel a year.
$1100 back in “fuel costs”. 4.2 cents a kilometer.
Charging it free on solar or OVO…

For $1200 a month. …. Basically a car for free.

Are they paying a lease or not?

🤣🤣
Seriously …. You need to check out fast chargers … have you been in a coma for 4 years?

1) fast chargers destroy the useful lives of batteries
2) This is not the issue at hand. The issue at hand is amortising an entire car that has a battery capable of 1,000 to 2,000 full cycles, for a energy storage devise and a purpose it is not well designed for (control systems for this purpose are very different)

Unless you can recharge at work cheaply (firms should be able to get cheap energy if they are agile )

companies like MinRes no longer allow recharging within the building, as their insurance companies won't cover the fire risk after a tesla caught fire under their building. It took four hours to put out the fire and placed the entire head office work force at risk.

You will find charging on the street or open air car parks to be the norm unless the risks decrease

I think he’ll own at the end of the novated lease
Its not a free car if he's paying a lease.

This one is $69 000 over 5 years.
A lot of people include their running costs as part of the lease, its better for tax, but if you are in a position to minimise your costs like you pointed out, you'd be better reducing your lease payments and exclude running costs.

At the end of this one, there is a residual payment of $18 000. To own it you need to pay the residual.

This seems to be pretty typical in the lease industry, and there are cases of people left with a residual of more than the car value. Yep that cute looking Citroen seemed a good idea at the time.

The value of novated leases depends very much on individual circumstances.
