The worst team to win a premiership

The Don is probably right but I can't forgive Essendon for being the only club to lose a Grand Final against Collingwood since 1958.

Well if we're talking win/loss records in the home and away season, then the Crows of 97 & 98 certainly wouldn't be the best team to win a premiership, considering they had 13 W/ 9 L seasons.

Lucky for us we had an absolute genius of a coach who masterminded 2 of the biggest " come from nowhere" premierships in VFL/AFL history.

If we had only won the one premiership, I would be prepared to admit we were the worst team to win a premiership, but having done it two years running, I will cut them some slack.

So, in summing up, Sydney of 2005.

sydney 2005. i may sound biased due to us losing the match and although they have a few talented players the way they play just isnt appealing to me. no offence to swan supporters just the gameplay roos uses even though it does get you places is ruining the freeflowing 1 on 1 footy. the worse thing is a lot of other teams are following lead.

I'd say the crow's in 97 and 98. They just got plain lucky in both Grandfinals. Although 1997 was a pretty average year for the AFL.

We got lucky in the '98 Grand Final, not the '97 Grand Final.

There's nothing lucky about beating St Kilda in a Grand Final.;)

I mean, obviously Fitzroy 1922. Finished the minor round with a percentage of just 108% and then somehow snuck through with 3 narrow finals wins. Oh, sorry, you mean 'worst team within the memory of the average 16 year old'.

Can't you come up with some interesting topic to encourage people to troll opposition supporters?

Only the fact that the Bulldogs were meant to be there and not you guys, sorry but any team that finishes 5th doesn't deserve a premiership.

We finished 4th in '97.

We actually beat the Bulldogs in the prelim, so I'm not sure why the Bulldogs were "meant to be there".

Same ******** different smell you guys were not the best team for that year end of story.
I've already admitted that in an earlier post.

You claimed we were just plain lucky to win the '97 Grand Final.

But you just go with whatever suits your argument.

No question the worst team to win it all was Sydney last year. Had the Eagles actually done anything that day we wouldn't have had to go through a scikening year of Gerard Healy in the afterglow of a Sydney win.

Pies 1990
Essendon 1993

Team of 93

David Calthorpe, Mark Mercuri, Gavin Wanganeen, David Grenvold, Joe Misiti, Ricky Olarenshaw, Sean Denham, James Hird, Michael Long, Dustin Fletcher, Peter Somerville, Dean Wallis, Paul Hills, Chris Daniher, Tim Watson, Mark Harvey, Paul Salmon, Mark Thompson, Gary O'Donnell, Darren Bewick

Doesn't look too bad on paper. I think the "baby bombers" just won a premiership before they were ready or before they became recognised stars. They really should have achieved more in 94 (finished 10th).

Can't help but say Adelaide 97, 98.
I hate St Kilda and hated the Dogs back then but Libba's kick was a goal in 97 prelim.
In 98 I hated the Roos more then you lot cos they bored me stupid but it makes me sick to know that Adelaide has as many premierships for the 90's as WC and North and more than Essendon and Carlton knowing that all 4 teams were sooooo much better than the crows in the 90's win/loss ratio.

So, you were the goal umpire in that game but decided at the time it was a point? Having second thoughts are we?

Whilst we weren't in the same league as Essendon of 2000, we were the team with the best defensive record for the year (we let in less points in both years than Essendon did of 2000) and was the team with highest %. So we weren't that bad.

In both years, the flag race was wide open and we took our opportunity. Thats life.

Back to topic, Swans of 2005.

finished 4th and got creamed by Melbourne in the first final.

Used the finals system to our advantage, unless a string of upsets in the first week - any two of 8th beating 1st (but that game was played the night before so result was already known), 7th beating 2nd or 6th beating 3rd - then we couldn't be knocked out but also couldn't get the weeks rest either.

Not the first team to lose a final but win a flag and haven't been the last - see Sydney 2005 or Eagles 2006.
