Bye Brisbane: Mark Harvey to coach Essendon next season.
Former Essendon great Mark Harvey is expected to be unveiled as the interim coach of Essendon tomorrow.
Harvey, who played 206 games for the Bombers from 1984 to 1997, last night agreed to take on the job following the 12-month suspension of head coach James Hird amid the club's supplements scandal.
Hird has been banned from coaching by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute.
Sources close to the club said Harvey, who was in Perth when told he had won the job, would fly to Melbourne overnight to negotiate the final details of his contract.

I agree. And it would be mighty hard on Harvs. He would be the true premiership coach IF we managed to win it.

I've heard from a number of people that he'll play more of a mentoring role at the end of next season, and return to the full swing of things after the season.

So why is Hird getting whacked for having us on a generally upward trajectory, but wasting two years as you say, whereas Buckley gets a free pass for wasting two years with a downward trajectory?

The difference is that Collingwood played finals in the last two years and we should have and didn't. I look at the last two years, not only this year.

Buckley's big mistake was sneering at the culture under Malthouse, and immediately trying to change it. Buckley needed to keep that culture for a year or two, and if the team struggles ( relatiively ), then you make steps to change culture. You don't just step in and change a winning culture.

So taking a back to back grand final team from 2nd to 4th to 8th is acceptable, but taking a 3rd last team from 14th to 8th to 11th with 2 less points to 7th is not?
