If he does go - i cant believe Geel would want Darcy . Abbot gave him an absolute bath when Geel towelled up Freo

Abbot is a jumping ruckman - where as Darcy is one of those shockers who just stay stationary on the ground .
However he is from the Geel region and is related to Tim Darcy so the Cats will probably recruit him unfortunately

Another spud in the ruck

Darcy is a spud. He has the mobility of a dead giraffe. I'd be livid if we gave up anything of note for him. Stanley is a much better ruckman and player.
Its like this:

Brisbane - Out (Pick 4) In (Neale)
Port Adelaide - Out (Pick 9 & 10) In (Pick 4)
Fremantle - Out (Neale) In (Pick 9 & 10)

Fremantle could then use picks 9 or 10 to get Hogan.
Hogan isn't worth pick 9 and 10.
That's what I thought.

Where are Port getting Pick 9 & 10 from, though? They'll have one of them from the (9, say). Where does the other one come from?
From Nth for Polec.
The poster has been warned about respectful posting.

Im sure there will be a change.

The topic can and will be discussed reasonably without the insults.

GO Catters
The same poster reported me and had my thread privileges removed from the drafts and trading thread, for ... you guessed it, an insult. He's a school kid who has the intellect of a 5 yr old. Just thread ban the trolling imbecile.

I got a warning for telling the truth (harshly) that West Aussies were coming off as morons with their trade ideas.
10 pages on and they haven't dialled down the stupid.

Not as bad as Crowbots wanting a top 15 pick in this draft for the lesser McGovern.

You make some good points, though I don't entirely agree. But that's 'opinion'for you, hey?

Boxing, Cricket, Soccer, Olympics etc are all examples of excessive money and blatant corruption.

But I see your pov .
Olympics doesnt have excessive money. Most athletes get paid virtually nothing by their countries sporting bodies. The only olympians that make big money are the gold medalists and thats through mostly private sponsorships. This large discrepancy in pay encourages drug cheating.

Private sports are not free of corruption from gambling but paying the sports stars big money surely only reduces the likelihood of gambling corruption. I cant see how it increases it?

I was pointing to the corruption within the Olympic movement, not athletes payments per se.

Big money attracts predators, who prey on the weak.

Tim Kelly should be offered a contract for 4 more years, sign it now. Make it generous and life changing so his family is sorted.
If he won’t sign then trade him out NOW.
The club should be setting the rules. This guy was passed over for 5 drafts, he’d still be fitting off power plugs hoping to have a taxable income of $50,000 if the Cats didn’t change his and his families life forever.

There’s no point keeping him for 2019 if his mind has already moved to a new club.
If he does an ACL in round 3 then the club is now paying for a year of rehab and his value drops massively - and something like that isn’t out of the question considering his body is getting worked harder than it ever has been, 2nd year blues happen often.

If he gets even better and becomes a gun then the likelihood of resigning him drops even further as WA clubs will be keeping a kitty in preparation of a huge offer to see out his career in WA at the end of 2019.

Keeping him is 100% a gamble that they may hopefully upsell him at the end of 2019 for more than they can get now.
It doesn’t work. Get what you can now, bird in the hand...

Kelly doesn't owe Geelong as much as you think he does. Who he does owe / have responsibility for his his young family. He seems like a great young man, maybe he stays for 2019, maybe he will request a trade in a fortnight. Either way, we will know soon enough.

It's like people think we picked Kelly to change his life. Not so, we picked him to hopefully provide a service to the club.
House was passed over in the draft, and we picked him then delisted him after not playing a game.
Why? Because we don't owe him anything.

He’d have been an electrician this year if it weren’t for Geelong.
2019 draft being his 7th attempt at being noticed.
Each attempt being less likely than the last.
Geelong changed his life.
Now he’s negotiating $500,000+ a year deals.
If he can’t sign on, leave before it gets harder.
If his family needs to be in WA, leave now and do Geelong a favour.
Geelong shouldnt have to take on the risk of a player who’s mind has left.
The honourable thing to do is admit family must come first and he must leave now.
Why should fans bother following a club with rotating doors?
Is it a team or a colourful jumper that supporters are investing in?
The club needs players who will stay and invest in the club, shouldn’t be the supporters sole responsibility.
I like Tim Kelly and would love to sign him for years but if he can’t commit, please leave now because this club desperately needs club players, not individuals.

Not a hope in hell he would have been an electrician this year. He would have been picked up by another club if we didn’t pick him up. Otherwise why would we use such an early pick on him.

Its two options really from Kelly's perspective:

1. Either sign a contract extension with us starting from 2019 onwards, or
2. Request a trade early for a WA club starting a multi-year contract in 2019.

Only these two options open the door for more $$ starting next season, rather than being on minimum wage for next season.

In addition, there will be tax advantages and less risk for him, to have a multi-year contract starting from 2019 spread over multi-years, rather than waiting another season on minimum wage, and then getting a premium wage starting in 2020.

This is evident in his comment - "I just need to see what comes my way" - that means $$, and sooner rather than later.

The third option, is the unlikely one, where Geelong grows a back-bone and says, nah, your contracted to 2019 and you have to honour your contract and no trade is available.

If its Pick 6 in return for the trade, the deal will be done... We will end up with either one of the King's or Rankine. High end talent.

Didnt say he was, I said it would be 1 of those picks.

Thats fine but there is big money in amateur sport as well. Gambling makes that so. High sports attendances amd tv viewership also make that so.
Witness the VFL before WW1, where betting-inspired corruption was so bad that reputable bookies wouldn't even bet on it.
And in Oz cricket it went back even further.

I am no drafting expert, but I have recently noticed that Tim Kelly stories no longer include GFC as an option. This happened in the last two weeks. WC and Freo only clubs mentioned.

The thing that irritates me is that Kelly signed a 2 year contract, and not even midway through the term of contract there was mounting expectation by supporters and the media that he essentially ignore that contract and commence negotiating a new one. Where else in society does this happen?

Is it any wonder players say they don't want to think about the contract until the season has ended.

I wonder if we would be having this same discussion if Kelly had been a bust in his first season and not a star, it seems to me that going home would only be a viable option if there was interest from WC or Freo so if he stunk it up you would think he would be forced to stay and see out his contract, now this brings me to the family issue and homesickness issue, if he didn't have the option to return home what would he do? Listen to the wife, give up footy and return home to Perth and go back to his laboring job, me thinks not so whats the problem with staying with us now, he's only returning home because he can not because he has to.

Is that a poem?

AFL football is a commercial business for both the entity (league and clubs) and it's employees (staff, including players)
Players get paid for their services, much like I do for mine in my career. Just because my workplace thought I was the best person for the job and pays me accordingly, doesn't mean any loyalty is owed beyond ensuring I am working for the time they pay me. How is this different for AFL footballers? It is their profession.
Not sure what clauses (if any) he has to terminate his services, but he can either choose to exercise them or not.

Stunned this thread is at 91 pages to date, when the guy is contracted for another year and has said nothing publicly to any contrary effect of fulfilling his contract.

Whether he's traded or not he has to be on draftee wages in 2019 according to afl rules. Just like when Boyd was traded after a year he was still on draftee wages in year 2 then the huge money started in year3.
