Time to ban live export once and for all

Just ban it outright.
Can't just stop it overnight though, needs to be phased out albeit hopefully pretty quickly.

Also as much as I want live export stopped anyone understandably upset about this issue but then say happily eating a bacon and egg sandwich today needs to think about how those animals are treated on our very own shores.

I hate this government, they thrive on cruelty, whether to their less fortunate citizens or asylum seekers or to animals. Anything that stands in the way of the almighty dollar is fair game.

So the live export trade has only been in existence since 2013?

Do you remember the shit fight when Labor stopped it? It went as far as some idiots trying to tell us they were denying the developing world protein.

Yes I remember when Gillard stopped the movement of cattle to Indonesia and yet here we are now and nothing has changed. They're all ****ing cowards. I do however give Gillard some credit for at least having a crack.

See, it's not hard to make a comment without coming across as a pissing and moaning opposition politician every single time you post something in these threads.

Now that I'm not at work and can take time to have a bit of a look. It was never Gillard's intention to stop it. It was just suspended until procedures were agreed upon and put in place that would satisfy us that animals were being treated humanely.

It was better than nothing at least.

Is there a time limit of killing the sheep and consuming them?

I would have thought it would be easier to slaughter them here, butcher them, package and chill into handy little pallet sizes and forklift them onto a big floating fridge.

That is what would happen in an ideal world.

At present there is a shortage of slaughter capacity. Our labour costs makes the meat expensive to slaughter, handle and freight. Abbatoirs can't be re opened or built overnight, All the people who want to ban live exports would object to them being built where they lived. There would be a shortage of skilled labour
to process the animals. The countries buying the meat would have to have the infrastructure to handle and distribute the meat

Banning live exports immediately will cause increased animal welfare issues, proven by the ban on cattle exports in 2011 to Indonesia.

Farmers were unable to offload their cattle and many had no feed reserves to feed them, starving not only the cattle destined for export but other breeding stock on their farms. Indonesia sourced cattle from other countries that increased the time of cattle on ships to weeks not days with worse animal welfare standards than Australia.

To all the people wanting an instant ban, research the consquences

What is better than nothing? Sending innocent people broke resulting in despair and suicide!

joyce the dickhead on sky today

" Didnt happen on my watch "

Even sky were like " YOU were minister at the time you dumb campaigner !!! "

Not surprised he didn't know , was too busy ****ing a different type of mutton on the public dime

coward

Absolute coward
These animals are just pulling a stunt like that Bernie Banton guy.
Just man tony abbott excuse: Just because those animals are suffering and are on the receiving end of animal cruelty, it doesn't mean those animals have a pure heart!:p:D

I'm split on this one. On one hand, I hate seeing cruelty to animals and having seen (youtube) some of the shit that happens to them in the ME (halal slaughter) makes me sick.
On the other hand, I have farming relatives who would probably end up selling the farm if the trade was knocked on the head over night.
Kuwait has threated retaliation against Australia if the live sheep stops, not in a armed forces scenario but in all trade with Australia will stop and it's not just food and it's not small change.

It's the same old story, mix animals with money and animal welfare becomes a low priority.

The live sheep trade is, in effect, legalized animal cruelty.

It's going to be regulated so that should mitigate if not fix the issue. Politicians should talk to some farmers before doing something as stupid as killing an industry, excess product, and people's livelihoods along with it.

Sorry, just passing by and was rather shocked to see some basic common sense and intelligence.

Sure beats the regulation kneejerk stupidity from those hoping to grandstand their super amazing moral superiority.

Sometimes it seems like a precondition we spend zillions, or screw some part of our nation/economy... just so we can all have a universal hug and get that all important warm fuzzy feeling.

We'll be wanting bans or increased red tape on aquaculture soon, if someone shows footage of a drought effected fish farm/dam with some gasping fish in it.
Perhaps we could ban road trains due to those poor sheep being choked by dust.

They sure know how to become emotional though when their lettuce hits $5. Thats the farmers fault as well...not because they were forced to stop shooting rabbits and find a more expensive difficult way to control them before chauffering them 50km so that a vet can put them down in a more "humane" way at $100 a pop. Of course that be worth it though so that we never see a bunny suffer.

Simple compromise.
Its really not that difficult to solve anything when kneejerk emotion is taken out of a decision making process.

And when Labor stopped it, did world live exports stop? Or did other countries with lower standards and oversight increase their production.

Banning something in one country makes you feel good but just sends the problem somewhere else and often makes it far worse.

Or do you consider it a win when we dont export sheep but Thailand does?

Are the same people who have destroyed the livelihood of Australian farmers also protesting in mass as to why they are shipped live in the first instance? Barbaric live slaughter of live animals based on religious grounds.
My answer would be no!

Well said. Democracy used to be all about compromise. Now it's about chasing the right headline carefully timed with peak outrage. It's insulting...

I wouldn't call any response to this latest episode, knee jerk when there have been problems and incidences on these ships for years, this one is just the last in a long line and I think a lot of fair minded people from all walks of life have just had enough of it and are finally starting to voice their concerns in larger numbers.

The rest of your post if pretty much just nonsense.

Oh sod off. You were on the greyhound thread happily condoning the torture of rabbits, possums and pigs for the pleasure of sadistic morons. You have zero credibility (and moral integrity) on this issue.

And what happened? The abc failed to report all of the cattle that were stranded & died due to farmers not being able feed them, businesses closing down, people being stood down, being made redundant!
Then the actual shortage in the revenue for the government & added costs for the people made unemployed!

There is a whole long process to have the live export business shut down will take years due to needing new facilities built to support new standards as to what they will be

The irony in everything abouts this is that majority of the left want abortion mate legal!
Shipping a live animal that will be killed as soon as it gets off a boat is wrong yet killing a human fetas is fine

Looney leftie logic
