Player Watch Tom Doedee - Departed for Brisbane, End of 1st Round FA Compensation

Going by Olilvie & Noble's smirks...grins whilst Pyke read out Doedee's name I'd say that yep.. He was hidden and we've pulled a swiftly.

Hidden by Geelong it seems, which makes it even more funnier, just wait until he plays, he'll probably turn into the next Fyfe.

Maybe it was a sweetener as part of the Danger deal. Gave us some info on a diamond in the rough.
I just made that up - but not inconceivable.

The reality was supporters got frightened we wasted a pick because they didn't know his name before the draft. That is essentially what it is in a nutshell. They are using phantom drafts and any other bit of info that works in the favour of their argument that the AFC don't know what they are doing and Tom would have gone pick 7001 on draft day and we should have had lower picks and not used pick 17. The mind boggles at the argument of having a lower pick to pick a player we are interested in just because he wasn't "rated" that high in a floored lottery system phantom draft.
And yet a month before the draft 99% of supporters had no idea about most of the other draftees either.

People were disappointed we paid more than what seemed to be the market value for someone. Crows seem to be pretty vigilant with their trading so it was disappointing that we didn't trade our first rounder for a later pick and another pick/s.
I think what screwed us over was that we probably thought we were still a legitimate chance of picking up Himmleberg and when that didn't come off we took who we rated the next best.

What really annoys me is when people exaggerate, you're guilty of it and so are plenty of others. No one expects the draft to unfold in the order of phantoms, no one is that stupid. Whilst Marty is going off the scale at one end the majority of people who are questioning the decision aren't denigrating him.
All I'm saying is he's a bigger risk than a player normally taken around that pick.
He hasn't played the amount of footy that the average draftee would have at that age.
Even Tom himself said he we spoke to him a few months ago and he wasn't sure we'd pick him up after we traded away our second rounders - he wasn't expecting to go that high.

There has never been any criticism of him by me. I hope like hell he becomes a great player nothing would make me happier.

I don't think they knew who they wanted during trade week so having the best possible picks was the best possible option. I don't think we expected to get Menzel so the picks that were used for him were probably expected to be used to upgrade 9&13 to 7&8. I think if Curnow didn't get caught drink driving he was a chance to be taken by Essendon instead of Francis, Francis was a dons fan, but other clubs may have viewed him as a flight risk so he may have slipped to us if Essendon took Curnow.
Even with the picks we had we hoped Carlton would take Curnow with pick 8, which is why we tried to make them think we would take him. Had Curnow been taken at 8 we could have taken Harry McKay at 9 and hoped Milera being a flight risk and a crows fan would make him slip to 13.

I didn't see anybody claiming we should swap 13 for two picks in the 20s during trade week.

Obviously no one can accurately forecast how good players are going to be at this stage but I find it fascinating to see who clubs draft as it shows a lot about how they rate their own lists. In our case our worse loss of the season was against Hawthorn in the finals and in that game we had similar contested possessions but they had about 100 more uncontested from memory. The 2 ways to address this are to get better at disposing of the footy to increase your own time of possession or to get more intercept marks to take the ball away from the opposition. If you look at our recruiting and trading this year we did everything to address the first issue but nothing to address the second until this pick. It follows that if Tom is indeed the best available one on one marking backman then this was actually a pretty logical pick and the only real issue can be wether we could have structured it so that we got better value.
The fact that we only wanted to use 2 picks anyway would therefore suggest that the only way to get better value would have been to trade 13 for a lower pick and a future pick which would have meant no chance of Mackay so on balance we probably didn't really have a lot of choice that way.

The other issue that does come up though is how much better it would have been for us if you could trade picks during the draft like the Americans. We would certainly have tried to trade down as soon as we knew that we were going to draft Tom so it's hard to actually see any good reason against it IMO and it would certainly spice up draft night. If we had traded down to 25 on the night and taken this kid then I don't think we would be seeing any of this criticism of the club now. Anyway I can't wait to see him play next year as we haven't had a really good intercept mark for a while now. Good luck Tom.

I think this is about the most accurate post.

The vehemence of the attacks on a club picking a 17 year old just because we hadn't heard of him is pretty stunning.

I hope we don't Tambling the kid - attack him so much with things out of his control that we break him.

Question? Why did the media and Phanton drafters rate the players that were rated top 20

Do you think it would have something to do with their performances at State and club/ school level to gain such a rating or do you think they liked their hair color or name?

Burton for example had the ability to play senior football for North Adelaide. Jonty Sharenberg is rated to make top 10 maybe top 5 this year at 16 he has managed to break into and perform at a level for an SANFL team. These players breaking into SANFL teams have done exceptionaly well against those playing for the Geelong falcons where 80% of that team are filled with hacks that wont go onto acheive anything like these elite footballers. Doedee was rated just late in the draft he has some upside with the fact that he is proclaimed to be raw having concentrated on basketball. Is that a good or bad thing that he isnt as tuned as other players rated better that have devoted 10 years to the sport and appear more polished because of this time in the sport.

To suggest that the said people have rated these players for any other reason is absolute garbage. Doedee didnt perform aswell as the players that were rated higher simply on results.

To put it in comparison, the Dangerfield draft thread from 07 maxed out at 650 posts.......

The only thing about Dangerfield V Ebert was we chose a player that was rated a 1st rounder against another player that was rated a 1st rounder, buit teh Vic Go Home factor against the SA boy was the key.

What has been the result?

Did the AFC do their homework on Dangerfield to ensure that wasnt going to be an issue, along with Gunston? Was there a floor in Ogilivie and how he chose talent(that is just a crack at the circle jerkers)!

They made the right choice with Dangerfield. Would you swap Milera, Menzel and Gore for Ebert? what about Eberts past seasons for Dangerfields? that's double no from me .

One result is we got a far better player than Ebert, for 7 years.

The media and phantoms all rated Bonner, Mathieson, Balic, Tucker and others way higher than any of the clubs did so your argument holds no water. Also the media and phantoms had no detailed medical knowledge about Burtons leg so that is hardly an argument either. It seems to me that your "circle jerker" reference would be a lot more accurately levelled at the media and phantom guys who all just copied each other. And BTW 8 years of Dangerfield is worth 108 years of Ebert any day of the week and that is no dig at Ebert just a measure of how good that pick and player actually were. I bet no one at West Coast regret drafting Judd and he was only there for 7 years.

Much of this thread has been nothing short of disgraceful. I'm sure all the negative Nellie's will be keen to say "I told you so " at the first sign that things aren't working out. If he does work out I'm sure you cowards will just say nothing. I for one will be calling you out. The kids is one of ours now and should be supported. Welcome to our club Tom and I wish you the very best. I hope that you can harness something from this negativity and that it puts a fire in the belly. Good luck

Bit dramatic don't you think? There's sequins and tiaras in that post

Who would you have picked instead of Doedee (one player, not 3)?

If we were any chance at winning a flag in the next two years I would rather have kept Dangerfield or even Ebert for that point as they would have more impact on getting that prize, if you want to draft say a Gun that will leave once they have the ability to help you win a flag, and then trade him for the future, but not realize what you drafted him for in the first place, then go ahead draft him out. It seems if thats the case you will never get to the pinnacle, maybe explains the last 17 years who knows?

There are more than 3, I would choose, as Wayne's-World said a KPP is far more important as they are harder to find, so that would have been my first choice against a HBF. Although its hard finding someone, percentages say your first round draft choice will give you the most chance of success. So a KPP is the ultimate, we have two one being Walker whom is an out and out gun, but injury has cost him. Does it look like we have another gun KPP in the wings? However saying that Milera isnt a KPP but definetly showed more than enough to justify pick 13 unlike our next choice!

Well, we do have one at least. McGovern: if he stays injury free, he's a good chance of making it. Wouldn't discount Dear either.

What KPP would that be this year?

The ones left at 17 have massive question marks on them, just as much as Doedee. Collins? He's slow and has ordinary agility. We don't need another slow, dour defender. We already have the best in the business in Talia. Ben McKay? He and his brother are both risks but Ben is even more so. He's slow, poor agility and very limited in terms of work rate/running ability.

At least Doedee has athleticism, work rate, defensive nous and reasonable skills on his side.

Looks like he fills a need for the Crows across half back with the injury plagued Henderson, Otten and Jaench not long term options across half back. Would be an upgrade on Cheney, Shaw and Brown if he fulfills his potential which means that there is wisdom behind the recruiters logic.

In 3 years a defense of Laird, Talia, Doedee, Kelly, Lever, Milera should be pretty elite.

May not have been the best player available at pick 17, but could well have been the best available player for the Crows list.

KPD or KPF? Name?

Thought Seedsman and Hampton were HBF's
