Certified Legendary Thread Tom Hawkins - clearly not insignificant !

Interesting stat on the Couch the other night - listed the # of free kicks given in a marking contest.

Tomma not listed anywhere in the top 10 - meaning less than Rance whom has 18. He might have more than Reiwoldt whom has 12.

Not sure where he sits but for Tomma to be 2 goals I thin behind Brown with at least 24 less free kicks in a marking contest ( granted doesn't say where they are paid) but thats a fair differential.

Of course, Tomma goes about his thing and gets criticised for arguing with the umps, but the media polish Jack for his rough treatment.

And its fair to say Tomma has gotten plenty of the rough end of the pineapple. Its not a perfect stat but adds to his case.

Nothing surprsing about players with the longer reach being infringed against more..... especially when you consider the chopping of the arms rule. Tommy is not really a reach player.
The problem Tom creates for himself is he gets into the habit of wrestling opponents, which means he isnt going to get a lot of free kicks playing that style of footy.

footnote: When he did get on his bike and lead up the field, he was virtually unbeatable. That huge bum of his is hard to get past. Hope thats registering with him, and he doesnt fall back into wrestling full backs.

The 30-year-old Cat averaged career highs in goals, disposals, goal assists and marks last season and assistant coach Nigel Lappin says the more time Hawkins spends with and around the ball, the better it is for the team.
“We’d like him to continue getting up the ground because Hawk plays really well in between layers,” Lappin says.
“He reads the game really well and he’s really good when he has 360 degrees to work in rather than just leading up at the footy, even though he does that really well.
“He’s a really smart player Tom so if we could have a target forward that can just be there whenever we need to bail out, it allows him just the freedom to roam and back his instincts which are very good.

Loved Tom's game today, and he has upheld his usual consistent standards so far in 2019.

It's hard to oversell just how important he is to our forward line structure; highly competitive in the marking duels but his ground ball stuff is incredibly underrated.

Damaging with ball in hand, ahead of even Gaz jr in terms of score involvements and goal assists.

He's been kicking his 2's and 3's, if his last couple of seasons are anything to go by he'll get stronger and stronger as the year progresses and start hitting the scoreboard more often.

He's the consummate modern key forward; can step up and be 'the man' when required, but is equally content to play the team game.
Makes good decisions.

The change in rules allowing the ruckman to take the ball out of the ruck and not be pinged instantly are working well for him, he just moves the opposition player out of the way and grabs the ball.

I do see why he’s generally not especially popular among other supporter bases but aside from the jumper punches and a bit of wrestling he’s a very clean player and a genuinely good guy. It kind of irks me he isn’t more popular or respected.
