Seems key defenders and ruckman are the best option for DFA's, break glass types.

100%... whether DFAs or not strictly so, but players acquired for a petty trade price cause they are on the verge of being delisted... full backs, rucks and general KPP utilities can be picked up cheaply each year.

Case study 1: Spend 4 years teaching Tristan Lynch how to ruck and he’s still mediocre... or pick up Pittonet for peanuts

Case study 2: Spend years developing Gault to then watch him become a decent WAFL player at 27. Or pick up 28 year old Roughead for peanuts

Case study 3: playing 20 year old Keane at full back before he’s physically ready or adequately experienced. Or picking up say Kyle Hartigan or O McDonald for peanuts and play them until Keane is ready

Shouldn’t be drafting young rucks or full backs unless they are A grade long term talent like Grundy

Take Lewis Jetta in a heartbeat on the cheap. Can't crack the Eagle fwd line, but would walk into ours.

Between Kennedy, Darling, Allan, Waterman etc he's got nothing to crumb, and when it does fall they have Ryan, Cripps and the likes. Our forwards cannot catch a cold - clean players with good disposal should be on our radar

Jetta has played backline for the past 4-5 seasons.

And he is well and truly cooked.

Jonathan Marsh delisted.

Did we ever trial him as a high-half forward/3rd-tall type player? Surely we have right?

Looks to have plenty of tools to be a more complete version of WHE with stronger physicality

Can add Kelly to the list of options. He's being groomed as a forward but has defence in his bag of tricks.

I wonder if that's where Kelly is of best value long term. If we're able to draft and play a highly rated key forward alongside Cox and Mihocek, Kelly is definitely an option in defence.

Marsh doesn't have anywhere near the natural talent of WHE IMO.

WHE lacks physicality and it's a shortcoming that has stopped him reaching his potential but he's still capable of moments of sublime skill.

He played chf in last year of juniors. His first couple of games for our VFL were in attack, but was quickly relocated to defence and stayed there.

Marsh has proven to be a very average forward at St Kilda. Unfortunately he's just not AFL quality and that's totally ok.

I'm not sure there's been too much deflection. Walsh and Guy have both said that it wasn't as bad as the media were suggesting. Anderson reiterated the same/similar.

This board has long been pondering the club's capacity to sign all of Moore, JDG and Grundy. Add the signings of Checkers and Daicos. Add that the AFL haven't permitted the Beams payout outside TPP and that it appears we're going to pay it all out in 2021 TPP. There were always going to be consequences. It appears to me that the club have elected to identify the players they'd prefer to lose and move them on.

People were complaining we weren't being aggressive in the trade period because the club suggested we would be. Then they're complaining when we are. We'll never know the truth of the discussion had behind closed doors but from the outside looking in and the way it has been portrayed it doesn't paint a pretty picture, but hard decisions have been made and hopefully we move forward from here.
Your a true believer!
Don't see how you think we were aggressive In the trade period. I think you'll find we were timid bent over.
You just keep on believing!

Great post. Many experts outside the club have also said the Pies trade period isn’t as bad as it is being painted. They’ve all said communication was poor but many think Pies are still in a strong position.

Marsh always had attributes... but some on here had rose tinted glasses looking at him. But we all do that at times.

May have improved on what was shocking kicking but in the end wasn’t a KPF and wasn’t a KPD. And too big to play on the small forwards.

Kind of Scharenberg like in being at awkward size.. not big enough to be a KPD or KPF... which is a vulnerable place to be because you then need to have multiple attributes all at once like reading the play exceptionally, overhead marking, pace, kicking, etc Howe is an example of an exceptional and rounded skill set mid sized defender

Whereas small forwards and KPP players can get by on a couple of attributes alone.

That being said... Madgen holds a spot in our backline. Not much difference in their stats, but one key difference between him and Marsh

He started off as a forward but it didn't work out because he can't mark, crumb, and his footskills are terrible.

Marsh had his chance with us and for his own reasons walked away. Couldn’t see him or us going there again.

Heard he was Driven Away with our Poor Welfare Department

Do you think they have managed our salary cap successfully?

Very few experts have said that.
Can I ask what was good about it? You can't claim $1.8-2 million saved is a win when same people who were responsible for the inflated wages orchestrated the fire sale.
