How can we justify trading Stephenson but keeping De Goey and Sidebottom? Both of them would be on more money and old enough to know better...

Really sour on how poorly this has played out, but I just have this feeling that losing Stephenson isnt going to be one in a couple of years where we go gee that was a mistake. I think itll be North trying to move his 500k in 3 years

I doubt the club or Stephenson will ever be forthcoming on the real reasons he was traded tbh. Sounded very much like Stevo was choosing his words carefully and being selective with what he revealed about that phone conversation.

Another first round pick wasted and given away for peanuts on top of beams is a mistake.

Exactly. I don’t believe we should trade players like Stevo or JDG. But Sidebottom at his age is expendable. There’s a strong message to send to the rest of the group by trading a senior player.

Sidebottom?

I dunno; maybe the years and years of great leadership, elite level performance, and signing for less then market value every time he comes out of contract?

Horrible comparison. Steele has one mishap on his resume for 10+ years of service.

Stephenson chose the coach-less Tasmanian devils over FIGJAM Buckley.
Mate it’s pretty clear his first preference was to stay. His choice was made for him.

jonmacTrag No SPIN

Are we happy now lads or do we want more damage done to the club?

How much is enough?

Hope Stevo can turn it around. He was the softest player in the AFL this year, my 80 year old mum used a word I havent heard in years... "Squib".

So much potential, this year was hard to watch as he never deserved a game.

Pies made correct decision.

Move on

After looking again at the aforementioned post, I see a bunch of information that is pretty indicative of a number of talented young AFL players going back generations. His management was able to successfully score their client a big contract? Happens all the time (particularly at Collingwood, apparently). A 21 year old getting ahead of himself after receiving accolades? I'm not surprised in the slightest.

The bit about Collingwood looking to move him for an asset now seems like a particularly asinine given what we received for him. The post also says that the player wanted to stay. Doesn't really sound like the actions of a supposed egomaniac who is disliked by his peers.

Now, let's say that that all those things posted earlier were accurate. Do you think that those attributes make the situation untenable? Does the player deserve to be pushed out of the side? Let's be clear, there are a number of others who we've had at our club who don't uphold the same standards as the rest of the group on and off field that we've kept.

So who's to blame in this scenario? Sure, Stephenson needs to take accountability for not living up to standards of the club with training etc. But surely the leadership at the club needs to be responsible for nurturing the culture of the playing group?

You could well be right about culture - if he turns out to be a reliable, committed, elite performing star at NM, but if not?

This is a ridiculous suggestion. Like i pointed out before, you think it sends a bad message to trade out an underperforming kid? Try trading out a respected, hard working leader who everyone loves, for his only mishap in 10+ years, and see how that works out for you.

Absolute lunacy.
