The reactions on here is simply staggering! agree with we are moving on soft one sided footballers that butcher the ball.

Norf should be cross examined for forking out 5 x $500k for a troubled individual thats had one good year and a weak plodder who is a punching bag on this site for the same money!

As for Treloar, show me any positive comments on any match day thread and ill give you one of gimps Gorilla's

2 first rounders (a third would have been idea) is great, it'll be improved when we move our 2021 1st into this year as well.

Deep breath, the excuse of salary cap is finally gone and we can now make a play for big names next year.

So players we recently re-signed (one which was pick 6 a few years ago) on 500k, 600k and 800K deals being shipped out for pick 14 is great? Not to mention the damage done to the reputation of the club, the lack of faith players will now have and pissing off majority of your fans.

That's some A grade spin!

I’ll answer it.
Because the better performing clubs don’t want to pay the ridiculous contract dollars that Collingwood signed Stephenson to.
He is a talent, but not a 600k talent at this point in time.
Had an awful year, had off field issues and is being overpaid by a factor of two.
Smart clubs won’t pay that. We will, and have.
ok. He is a $300k pa player. I'm not saying what we are paying players is great (in fact it's terrible), but his manager obviously negotiated hard for it and got it. Will he be worth $500/$600kpa in 5 years?? Who knows. We can't afford to wait to find out. Maybe if he was professional/diligent there would be a chance. But he hasn't shown that. I'm sure the club has expected more from him. I'm sure his off-field reputation needs alot of work. I honestly think his career will never hit the heights expected after his first 18 months.

He may well go the Lewis Taylor way.....

Aight so where's that 2021 Free Agency list?

Geez that sucked didn't it, but hardly surprising either. So we'll try do something else with 14/16, get up the order again, and also bank some points later again for Reef?

I'm torn on 2021 r1 pick, move it now to try get a decent top 10 pick this year (package with 14 or 16), or wait and see if the bottom falls out of the season next year and see where it may sit heading into that draft?

OUTS: Beams, Reid, Varcoe, Dunn, Shaz, Broomy, Treloar, Stevo, Phillips, Atu
INS: Picks 14, 16, 65, 70, 75, 92

Has to be a plan to pick up a delisted free agent or 2.

I'm open to anybody at this stage lol. But I think Matt Parker should be locked in, we literally need SOMEBODY to put pressure on JT to perform.

You left out Cam McCarthy. Just watch us pick him up as our prize recruit over the offseason.

Media team will even go all out and do a copy+pasta of his GWS year 1 highlights package on the Collingwood FC website and everything!

I think as a fan of the NBA, i’ve grown to take this kind of stuff pretty lightly.

Get used to it folks. Contracts aren’t going to get any more meaningful, clubs aren’t going to become less ruthless, and salary dumps are a thing.

You think not calling a guy immediately to tell them they’re in trade talks is bad.

A lot of guys in the NBA don’t even find out from their manager - they find out from Twitter or Instagram, and have to move to a new City without giving their consent. One player was traded literally while he was sitting on the bench playing for the team that traded him.

Thats where its going.

Yup, that’s cool. I watch the NBA and actually love their system. However, our system is not there yet.

Plus it’s like getting rid off Devin Booker and hitting the draft. You have talent in the team, no need to get rid off the only talent you have.

For better or for worse, this is 2020, and thats one the benchmark leagues of world sport.
I remember Demarcus Cousins being interviewed at the all star game press conference when someone can up and whispered to him that he had just been traded

he just signed for a WAFL side, don't think anybody contacted him. Shame

That kind of practice just reflects US society though, I’d hate for the AFL to become anything like that atrocities that are American sports.

In the end our players still had the choice to enforce their contract so your contracts are meaningless line doesn’t fit.

The damage done this trade period can be traced back to a handful of massive contract blunders:
Mayne 4-year deal on big $$$
Beams 4- year deal on big $$$
Sidebottom 5-year deal on big $$$
Treloar 7-year deal on big $$$
Grundy 7-year deal on massive $$$

We paid far too much for these five players and for far too long, which killed us when we had to then upgrade Moore, DeGoey, Daicos, Stephenson, Howe, Crisp, Maynard, etc

Complete incompetence.

There you go, hit the nail on the head

Absolute incompentance from whoever did the calcs on salaries and not projecting what had to be paid going forward

Whoever gave Treloar that deal should be shot, but to offload him for that is an absolute embarrasment

Not letting go of others instead of Stephenson, blows my mind

Phillips i can live with, but the other two deals are utterly laughable

Now that the trade period has been run and done and we know the outcome I'm happy to provide my thoughts on our offseason so far.

Overall it's not a great outcome for Collingwood. It wasn't helped by Ned Guy when he finally came out to speak publicly who didn't do a great job in selling the plan. To be fair I've only seen part of the FoxFooty interview and it was a bit of a hostile environment, but the fact is that Ned is also not a good media performer and our PR department was sleeping on the job. If he had've come out said our cap was out we've been trying to manage it for a few years but it came to a crunch this year especially with the reducing cap and we needed to bite the bullet and fix it whilst still putting ourselves into some sort of decent position for the draft I could have accepted it. Not happy, but you would go okay fair enough, but he just didn't sell or explain the plan that gives you confidence.

The realities are the four players we lost (Stephenson, Atu, Treloar and Phillips) weren't the worst to lose, but to lose them the way we did hurts. To be fair to Guy, it's not entirely his fault, he has inherited some of this mess. But he hasn't helped much in the situation, the only question is whether that's on him or whether behind the scenes there's been other interference that has effected it.

The only real positive is that with two 1st round draft picks in the teens plus still having 2021 first round and two 2021 second round draft selections gives us some currency to improve our draft position for the 2020 draft. Unless the rule has changed having two 2021 second round draft selections would allow us to move our 2021 first round and one of those 2021 second round selections for draft picks this year if we choose. Also with the rule change today that allows clubs to draft only selection this year, those two late draft selections could well wind up being picks in the 40s.

I would hope the club will be doing a full review, and I do think that it's time for new leadership at the top. I'd like to see changes at board level. But unlike many here I'm not going to tear up my membership or walk away from my club. I'm not going to be a bandwagon supporter only jumping on when things are going well and jumping off when things are going poorly. I stuck with the club through the nightmare that was the 90s and this is nowhere near that level of bleakness. For better or worse I'm a Collingwood supporter and I'm proud of it.

That's a bit rich mate. Alot of us, like myself, let the club keep their membership money through the "covid" season. I myself let the club keep two lots of membership fees.
Alot of us are angry on here, because the club got itself into such a mismanaged position of the salary cap, that they had to salary dump a Rising star winner just 2 years ago, a 27 year old mid who was the highest disposal winner of the competition this season, and a regular senior player for a fourth round pick. Not only was the trading ordinary, but hearing how Stephenson was treated, was disgraceful.
If your expecting glowing endorsements of our trade period, then your deluded like Ned Guy.

Why the fu** would anyone want to come to the club?

nobody is coming in for 5 years at least
nah. Players, supporters etc have short memories. Remember 2017 and then 2018???? Most here in 2017 weren't renewing their memberships for the 2018 season hahahaha!!!!

Mayne was worth the $400kpa

PLEASE!!!
We are run by a media professional. There was no leak. This was orchestrated to ensure it all happened. Pressure on the payers and managers and open invitation to clubs to make an offer. There was no going back for 3 players that wanted to stay but were openly shopped. It's pathetic but it's real.
Then he should be the first to go cos that’s a stupid ****en strategy.

He has the eloquence and nous like some bum from your local but it's clear as daylight he's been thrown under the bus.

I come in peace! I think Matty Parker would be a good pickup if you have list spots. He's a mercurial small / medium forward with quite the highlight reel, has the kind of speed and agility normally seen in a small (but he's 190cm) and can take a great mark; he will be cheap as a DFA pickup. He was a bit unlucky this season as I don't think anyone expected Butler to come in as top banana small forward straight away, and no-one is displacing Membrey as a medium forward in our side. With Marshall spending lots of time up forward and King in the side he just didn't seem to have a role.

The knock on him is that he needs to concentrate much more on doing the basics well and applying himself to the standards expected at AFL level in terms of preparation and training. That is a pretty big knock btw - but the delisting might be the wakeup call he needs.

I’m hoping we can package up next years first with picks this year to slip into top 5. If that can happen it would certainly lessen the blow.

feel for bucks... not his fault. he would do a better job at managing this list

actually feel for Ned as well... guy has had his career ended today, and should get close counselling for what he is already & will have to deal with in the media, from fans & the industry, forever....

I feel for Treloar missing out on 3 premierships.

I feel for a 21 year old boy dragged through this whole mess.

I feel for Tom Phillips to be on the trade table twice in 2 years.

Management are the issue. No pity for them.

Thanks for the offer mate.
But we are gonna back in our pick 76. We see a bright future for him has suggested by our leader Ned Guy.
