According to the afl website there is still a rookie draft (straight after the main and preseason draft on the same day). Not sure of the difference, maybe they just get paid less. Can't really see it myself. No team in the window is going to get rid of all its depth and replace them with draft age kids alone. Nor with guys who didn't get drafted and then need to be picked up as rookies.
Side note: Do rookies even exist anymore? I thought it was just one list now.
hawthorn drafted 8, 7 and 7 in their three peat years. Mostly rookies, but still kept turning them over. Not unusual for top teams to turn over 7 or 8 players as the gap between the players that improve the team and those that don't is clearer.
Looks like we have 8 going out and 1 coming in so maybe 7 spots. It sounds like Moore is getting elevated and Baker kept on the rookie list, while we are losing Stengel from the rookie list. So we could draft 5 in the main draft and 2 rookies. If we trade in 1 more player then that's only 6 across the main and rookie draft.
Trading should be to fill gaps or improve on best 22, not to build depth. In recent years we've picked up players like Broad and Garthwaite in the 5th round, so depth can be built through the draft with more scope for improvement.
