As good as Lever is, can he play as a number 1 defender?

Seems to be the 3rd at Adelaide behind Talia and Hartigan.

Someone like May fits the bill better.
Definitely can be a number 1 defender IMO but as Dannnn mentioned a couple of pages back we tend to prefer a setup where our defenders defend space and whoever comes into that space. Lever is perfect in that setup.

Not that height is that much of an indicator but he does have a couple of cm's on May, just needs to bulk up a bit.

Jones might yet be

The funny thing is, that for the first 5-6 times I read "Jones" in this thread I automatically thought Zac, and was confused by the level of interest.
So imagine my bewilderment now I've worked out it's Liam...

Talia is a stopper and Hartigan is basically Roberts without the footskills. I'd take Lever over both of them, easily. Doubt he leaves the crows though.

Imo we need an elite stopper as well on top of that interceptor type which imo Lever is. If Collins can become that stopper then great, but it seems many have written him off (I haven't, he's still only a kid, but Morris nearly going and Adams' injury proneness has me concerned)

Then we can develop Cordy as a forward

Losing Hamling, an effective stopper really hurt imo.

Bringing a stopper in is a waste. We have Roberts, Adams and Collins is still 3-4 yrs from having real impact. Need to back these blokes in or may aswell delist them now.
Not many clubs have 3, all at a young age also.
Lever is perfect. Part Easton Wood, Part Daniel Talia style. Would be absolutely rapt if we got him.

Disagree

Roberts is slow as treacle and is best suited playing on ruckman sized forwards which every club doesn't have. His strength is his marking and reading the play, he would be better used in the intercept role as he gets done on the lead time and time again when used at full back (was monstered by Kennedy and Buddy).

Adams is too injury prone for my liking now, but he's versatile at least, he can stop or intercept or play forward, but I would not be making him the lynchpin of our defence due to his durability.

Collins is a kid, hopefully he can be a stopper, but will he make it? Would like to see him given a go soon, apparently he's playing well at the moment.

Imo there is room for a stopper and hopefully Cordy goes forward.

Strings just put the JJ rumours to bed on Instagram. So kindly, shut the **** up and stop giving them air now
You mean to tell me SEN and the Bigfooty rumours board was wrong?!

Might be a chance this weekend, doubt we'll risk Sid on the back of concussion and after such a poor performance I suspect Bevo will make changes.

I would like us to be a much more aggressive player in the trade period this season now that the new salary cap increase has been announced. As a matter of interest, against us, Melbourne fielded 10 players from other clubs (if you include Mitch Hannan who coulda/shoulda been a Bulldog). I'm not saying that we have to do anything so drastic, but obviously, astute identification of 'needs players' can go a long way to improving the list. And, it's becoming painfully obvious that we have several 'needs'.

Why aren't we balls deep in Kelly?
We have a heap of above average mids already in Bont, Libba, Macrae, Wallis, Hunter, Dahl, Daniel etc, teams like Norf and St Kilda don't so not surprised they are, particularly Norf.

Our mids are out of form, they don't lack talent, they just need confidence and direction. I feel better coaching would bring the best of them again, this has been discussed ad nauseam as of late.

Our KPPs are a completely different story, we don't have high end talls, our mediums in Stringer, Wood and Morris are closer to high end and these types have helped bridge the gap up forward and down back. Cordy and Boyd could be high end talls in due course, while Adams could be also if he ever gets his body right, but imo it's a weakness of ours and nearly every key position so far can be improved upon so far except the forward-ruck role that Boyd has imo.

... and not one of those players can burst away from congestion. We need a burst mid desperately, even moreso with Jong out (the only player we have who can do it more than once per quarter given Stringer's tank).

Chuck Stringer in there

Clearance buster mids are rare, not every team has one. We won a flag without one, Hawthorn won 4 flags without one etc. Sydney's midfield gets lauded as one of the best in the comp yet none of them have that break away speed.

Fixing up out taller deficiencies and hiring some new coaching and fitness staff imo would give us better direction.
