My nuffy post of the year is this:Keath retiring.
Body cooked
Last year Keath had one of the best seasons a key defender has ever had for our club. He has been a key cog for our side since we got him.

Would like to know where we ranked last year, same personnel pretty much - would be pretty damning that there’s other issues at play.
Would be a massive shame if Keath finished up like this considering how good he was last year - it’s not exactly panic stations though. Jones will come in, Darcy looks an elite defensive prospect and surely we’ve got some plans for a Barrass, Logue etc with Buku coming through and Gardner now AFL standard back up at least. Not panic stations but tbf there’s a lot of ifs there considering 2 aren’t even on the list yet
West Coast telling him they want to trade him? It’s hard to stay from there. They seem to have a few younger players in the cupboard who will be there for the next challenge and won’t cost as much. Why would Barrass come ?
He is in his home state, signed a long deal not long ago , pretty sure he is on decent coin so not sure if we would be offering anymore years and dollars.
Only way he would consider would be a monster offer in years and $ and not sure we will do that

jesus kingy got something right about us...it must be pretty obvious.
Good point hadn’t thought of that but with McGovern and his issues along with Hurn and his age it’s a risk. You may be blowing any chance of a quick rebound up the ladder
It’s also risky doing that as you unsettle others in the playing group and also you lose your trading position as you have asked a player to g
yeah, west coast are in for a long build. I suspect Barrass would be near done before they are anywhere near competing again. They have a dearth of youth and have to do it a rebuild the slow and methodical way. Draft and draft hard. Get as many top picks as you can get and be prepared for a 5-7 yr build. Their list management has been horrendous over recent years. They kept their ageing stars a year or two too long, and gave up way too much for Kelly. Barass might be tempted playing for team which is competing over the coming years…and a change of scene…Barrass is one of the few on their list with currency. They need to give up something of value to get anything worthwhile.
We don't have enough outside leg speed to make it stick. We are easily closed down if you hunt with real intent. Bont hasn't been able to break clear this year he has to be playing hampered by somethingOther clubs have caught onto us. Our handball happy / flick it around by hand game plan is dead.

Honestly outside 5 has completely derailed our season - we probably wouldn’t win the flag but I have no doubt if we didn’t adapt this tactic round 1 we’d be comfortably in the 8 right now and in a tight year who knows. Wasted opportunity and someone has to give some explanations
Eagles Defense is pretty bare bones other than Barrass. I wouldn't be surprised if McGovern retires next year. He looks cooked. Many of their 30+ are cooked now and probably wont be worth much except Gaff.
If we get Barrass, a big if, then our spine will consist of JUH, Naughton, Darcy, Barrass and English with Jones, Lobb, Bruce and maybe Keath as back up. That will very possibly be the best spine the Dogs have ever had.
Thanks OG, I find it hard to believe we’re 3rd for marks inside 50, really doesn’t seem that way watching - but I guess we have really badly beaten up on all the teams below us.Marks Inside 50 - Competition Ranking (For / Against)

I hate it when people make statements as if they’re facts, and not just their opinion. Happens on the team previews all the time. How hard is it to start with “I think…”?Sorry is this a rumor or fact???

Is it possible to see how often our inside 50s are to no target compared to other teams?

I definitely agree with your point about teams having figured out how to shut down our contested game but I do think there's more to it. The number of times the opposition can hit up leads in an open forward line compared to our constant bombing to a crowded forward line isn't just about contested ball.I don’t really agree with that, it should play into our hands with our move the ball by hands style, our whole ball movement game revolves around over lap handballs and the stand rule should completely open it up for us. We have Daniel, Dale & Red peeling off half back for the overlap. Bont & Libba with super penetrating kicks plus Macrae/Daniel elite short kicks - two of the best at hitting those 45 angles in the league, which should again be completely open for us to hit with the stand rule. Baz & Treloar the run on the overlap forward of center.
It should play right into our hands but we’ve got bigger issues, more importantly for us is we’ve lost our contested edge - we used to win every hard ball and our handball game and spread was built on that, but other teams have worked out how to defend us in the contest - they just shut down the options rather than overcommitting to the contest which forces us to shovel the ball mostly backwards with dinky little handballs going no where before we’re forced to throw it on the boot, or even worse just turn it over on the hands whilst our defence has already pushed aggressively high to get involved.
You’re right that this team has previously thrived in congestion but currently congestion is our nemesis imo
Love your work Oliver.
