If Dunkley goes - is our window shut anyway?
On field gives his all, off-field one of the most professional players on the list.

I’d say so, he was easily our second best last night. There’s no obvious internal replacement, unless we think peak McLean is coming back. Midfield looks pretty grim defensively without him. We’d need to recruit a replacement.

The core is great. The spine is developing but talent is there, of course the whole backline needs to be rejigged which won’t happen in one off season but we can make big strides. Dale & Ed the only locks really.

Cut the deadwood, there is way too much of an over-reliance on shit ball butcherers filling flanks. Bev again complaining about poor entry inside 50. No shitttttttttt!!! You can’t fill the flanks and wings with the likes of VDM, Roarke & Hunter and then complain when they can’t hit a target inside 50. We have a meat grinder of a midfield, we need to shift our secondary support from these good blokes, hard training ball butchers to high impact types, who can run & use the pill, I don’t care if they don’t have 25 touches a game, we don’t need accumulation we need players who can finish our hard work.

Keep: Libba, Macrae, Bont, Caleb, Dunks, Richards, Naughton, West, Bailey Smith, Weightman, Garcia, JUH, Bedendo, Darcy, Cleary

Anyone outside of that should be expendable. We’re not winning a flag with this current list and should look for a quick rebuild to build on our young key forwards.

I don’t see the point in Jones or Lobb. Neither are going to be in our next Premiership side. Keath, Treloar and Bruce were fine experienced additions but it’s clear our window has now passed. We should be back in a couple of years with some decent list management and coaching

Fundamentally - either Bevo needs to change and admit that we need to change - or he needs to go.

Otherwise we are just wasting everyone's time. We're not going to win with his current thought process around F50 and D50 structure and setup.

If they dont do something about the back 6 they might as well just acknowledge that they've got no idea. Keath was fantastic in 2021 but was hampered by niggles this year and last night was caught out many times playing too far up the ground. He's looking absolutely toasted at this time in his career and cant shoulder the load. That leaves them with Cordy and Gardner. There's no way you can build a backline around those two. Richards was left to fend for himself last night with little support. VDM gave away a 50m at the worst time, in total possibly 3 goals and Gards was torched by his opponent on a few occasions.

Then the forward line as it is cannot be structured around Astro, JUH, Darcy and resting English. Too many times they got in each other's way last night

Moving forward, I would take a hard nosed , aggressive, defensive mindset that makes it hard for the opposition to score each week than the soft downhill skiier mentality we have currently.

There is absolutely no intimidating players at all other than Libba. They are too nice.

The problem with cutting Cordy is who will we replace him with? A possibly cooked Liam Jones?

Keath looks cooked. The cupboard is bare for available keys defenders around the competition

Don’t worry Gardner will be half decent soon like English will be able to compete in ruck duels soon.

I might disagree here mate - I don't think the coaches we currently have can structure any forward line correctly - regardless of who is in it....

I wouldn't write off that lot (although perhaps one tall too many), until we actually had competent forward line coaches...

If Dunkley stays I'd be stunned. He is being offered more money to play for teams who are better than us. Why would he stay? besides friendships theres absolutely no reason to stay. And we will see more leave over the next three years. The era is over my friends.
Reports are that he's been offered more money from Port and about what we are offering from Brisbane. Its pretty clear that Brisbanes offer is based around the hope that Dunkley has internal issues at the club. Hence the delay in re-signing. Not on wedging him out with lots of extra cash as Ports offer seems to be. I doubt that they are the only clubs that have a iron in the fire with his management given how good he has been this season.

We havent shown the aptitude to remain switched on for more than a qtr.

Short of bringing in players with pace and a manic desire for the contest. I cant see how we can achieve the change in mindset that is required to do it for 4.

The amount of times that we had players lazily caught in the open between opponents as Freo started to shift the ball around last night was as infuriating as it was predictable. As usual it was the inability of our forwards and mids to maintain any sort of forward pressure that absolutely torched the weakest aspect of our team. Our dire defensive half. Teams just feast on our forward half turnovers and we're kidding ourselves if we think that going into next season with 3 tall forwards is a winning strategy.

The club needs a massive re callibration. Focusing on defending and stopping the ridiculously leaked goals week after week. Play hard 1 on 1 footy with none of this stupid running back 5m behind the mark crap. Play Naughton and Kharmis down back with Gardner and Keath. That will sure up the defense .

Fast track JUH and Darcy up forward along side English who should occasionally pinch hit in the ruck. Play Sweet or get Lobb for ruck duties..

Daniel, Garcia, West and Weightman as small forwards with a defensive mindset to bring the Ball to ground and lock it in..

You could swap Astro and Darcy to break it up for 5-10 minutes occasionally..

I would rather a defensive hard nosed playing style than the tripe we are currently dishing up, zoning up on defence and playing 10 metres in front of the opposition's forwards. Can't stand that rubbish.

Agree and Dale also was given far too long a contract, these contracts should only be for Bont Macrae Naughton type players, lots of clubs are gonna get caught out as they are being given out to huge amount of players now.
Longer deals are back in vogue (Short getting 5 from Richmond, Curnow and his wonky knee getting 6 from Carlton!) so I don’t mind Bailey getting his deal, my worry with Caleb is he has well and truly been found out in the back 6 and been surpassed by Dale and Richards, so why the urgency to give him that extra year?

This is a really great point re: 3 tall forwards. Not one I've seen made as yet.

It's something I advocated for during the season (3 talls) but you're right that it is likely having a large impact on how teams move the ball out of their back half.
Especially considering we don't have many natural small forwards with defensive instincts.

Yep it’s a really hard one, probably due to his performances just being so damn inconsistent - one week we’re reminded he can be the number 1 guy, the next we’re reminded he cannot.

What do you do there? No idea tbh, but I think it’s now at the point that we just can’t rely on that inconsistency. I think we find a genuine ruckman that can compete week in week out and then if English comes on great it’s a bonus. We’ve wasted so many years relying on him though, quite incomprehensible.

I still think he could be an absolute weapon utility/2nd ruck. This doesn’t mean he has to waste away at FF like some seem to believe. He’s a unique player with a unique skillset, why shouldn’t he have a unique role? Get creative with it, unfortunately creativity is not something this club has had for a while

Also trade Timmy while he is still in contract to West Coast. I got laughed at for suggesting a straight swap with Barrass (which will never happen I know) but we need to strike while the iron is hot.
this is the sort of thing you can do with a new coach, no relationships formed and much easier to make hard but correct calls

Article about Dunkley on Port Adelaide board.

Port Adelaide would be prepared to offer a single first-round pick for out-of-contract Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley as the Power steps up their chase for the in-demand midfielder.

Dunkley had put off talks over a contract until the end of the season and now has at least three options in a year in which he is out of contract but not a free agent after only seven years’ service.

Given his contract talks have drifted after starting as far back as last year’s grand final, rival clubs believe there is a good chance he will move on for a fresh start.

Port Adelaide will attempt to escalate its chase for Dunkley this week. So far the Power has offered him a long-term deal of around $650,000, similar to the Dogs’ contract offer.

The Power believes it is ahead of Brisbane, where Dunkley’s sister lives, because his girlfriend Tippah Dwan plays for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and is contracted for the 2023 season.

Two years ago the Dogs asked Essendon for two first-round picks when Dunkley’s manager Liam Pickering made clear he wanted to move clubs.
Essendon baulked but now that he is out of contract the Power believes a single first-round pick is a fair price.

Their first-round pick comes in at No.8 but will push back one spot to nine when Brisbane matches an early bid for father-son Will Ashcroft.
