Melican from the Swans 'gettable' - if we remove FS romance, he's a significant upgrade on Cordy as a backman.
Similar height but much stronger and has always presented as an 'honest' player who just does all the basics right. Don't think there would be much cost either.

Hasn't got a game this season. Is he just being held out by the McCartins ?

C’mon mate you can’t just decide that “marking” is irrelevant to small forwards because it doesn’t suit you, after you put forward the opinion that they were all roughly equal based on stats when the stats don’t bear that out. I’ve also watched the games and it’s a good string to West’s bow and a potential point of difference to the other options.

Tackling is undeniably relevant to the small forward role and West is streets ahead of Garcia there, perhaps even more than his marking. Almost to the point it renders a lot of the other angles to the argument moot, given they’re otherwise not dramatically different.

I don't see how Lobb improves the list. It's got a Jade Rawlings vibe written all over it.

I assume they want him to be a forward/second ruck. This will allow English a chop out in the ruck so he doesn’t get so worn down but allows us to still play 3 talls forward. It is a better option than Cordy or maybe Bruce but it’s not an area I would consider to be high priority for us right now.

Like many on here I am not a huge fan of Tim’s tap work, but if we can break even with clearances due to our midfield he can be a huge weapon around the ground. That’s the theory I suppose.

I would love to see Tim show a bit of ticker in a game, or more aggression. It is so frustrating to watch him play. He has all the tools.

I noted on Friday that Hickey gave away a dumb free leading to a Gawn goal, for the next 5-10 minutes Hickey dominated. That’s the kind of determination I want to see from English (the whole team really).

How is it an irrelevant stat? Yeah who wants a guy who can win 1on1 marking contests close to goal.

Sure a lot of small forwards are incapable of taking a contested mark which just makes it even more of a valuable/relevant stat for the ones that do. Its why Charlie Cameron is close to the best small in the comp

Still would not mind him. Would understand Swans defence structures and is relatively young.

No it hasn't because when Jade Rawlings played he had little quality around him. There was no number 1 or number 2 draft pick as a key forward and not a 22 year old who has kicked 50 goals in a season. Grant was coming back from a reco and the other forwards were Skipper and Bowden.

I am hoping Cleary gets more of a go next year. I have liked the little I have seen of him. Williams has fallen off a cliff this year. I am hopeful he can get back his form but who knows. I want an old fashioned defender there. These attacking types are great when things are going well but we need one guy who will defend like their life depends on it. Too much finessing.

What sort of player is Melican? If he’s stronger than Cordy is he able to play a one on one defensive role or still a bit too small?

His beak can hold more than his belly can.
And he wonders how in hell he can - get through the rest of his life with people reciting this almost daily.

Chops he played 14 games this year he had his chances

Its actually 13 playing games and 1 as a did not play sub this year and that wasn't until round 9 (playing). He proved he was much more than valuable and consistent that McComb, McNeil, VDM and Scott. Yes he deserved to be dropped but again VDM didn't deserve to stay in the side either (wasn't dropped).
McComb, McNeil. VDM and Scott all got runs in the senior side prior him this year. I don't believe their vfl form was that much better.
West got 4 games last year but 1 sub 1 Dnp, Scott 16 with 2 sub 1dnp, VDM 11 with 1 sub 1dnp.
in 2020 West got 4 games VDM 12
How is that an equal chance?

Pretty sure melican is a Kelly type isn't he? He's best is 1on1 and has some pace about him.

Fitness and application seems to be the knock on him. Sounds like he just doesn’t work hard enough or want it enough.

Yep, talls take time but a 26yo who's played 52 games in 7 years and 0 in the last year does seem a hell of a long shot

You know what contested marking is right? It's not trying to take mark of the year every week (Weightman). It's standing your ground and holding off an opposition player to mark the ball.
If you are trying to suggest that West is not ahead of the the other 3 in this skill then I have little respect for your opinion on this subject.

Dunkley if he leaves.
Potentially Daniel in the backline and push Daniel up the ground.
Roarke and VDM need to be moved out of the team.
Can never have too much depth that is actually decent with scope to improve

Yep - pre-agent too so could be pried out.
Similar height to Cordy but 5-8 kgs heavier.
