I don’t see why we can’t do a Melbourne/west coast style dip and straight back up there, there issue being they had a terrible year and got a top 3-4 pick before bouncing back.

Backline needs work massively. Richards, Dale, Cleary, Williams offer us something there.
Keath looks cooked recently, Gardner is out if his depth and O’Brien was a bust, so we need key position players and a lock down defender in that backline. You can get away with one weak tall or lacking a lockdown small but not both.

So we need realistically 2 Kpds and a lock down small. Potentially get one KPD this off season and draft one.

Forwardline no where near as bad. We have Naughton, Bruce (to return).
JUH and Darcy developing that’s the tall stock there. Weightman was having a good year pre-elbow injury.
We lack a high speed pressure small. Add that and

F: Pressure Small Bruce JUH
HF: Weightman Naughton resting mid

Is a decent forward line.

Midfield is alright probably lacking a second wingmen with speed.

Ruck is okay for number one but second ruck and depth rucks is an issue. Second ruck may get solved when Darcy develops but could be a couple of years or could be solved if lobb comes.
Biggest reason we won’t bounce back is the coach. Simpson and Goodwin were willing to adapt. Plus they didn’t have VFL standard assistant coaches

We have shown the tendency to give up within games when it gets too hard.

This could get ugly now that our season is essentially beyond repair.

Maybe it's just me, but with the turn up the toes attitude shown against the Swans and at other times this year, I hope it does get ugly and I hope the joint implodes and we get some real change because it's what is needed.

True we don’t want to but of the 6-9 that would go.

Martin is already gone
Wallis has been on the outer for 2 years
Butler isn’t up to it
Duryea has missed big chunks with
injury
Cordy and scahche are absolute depth at best and liabilities

We obviously can’t just go to the draft to replace these guys, we need a combination of trading in and drafting.

If Dunkley and JJ want out then need ti be aggressive with what we get for them and trade in.
Can’t believe Hunter doesn’t cop more heat on here. This bloke has turned into a slow turnover machine, his arms flailing around like the robot from lost in space. Number 1 priority Key Back obviously then closely followed by a wingman in the Isaac Smith mould.

Duryea should certainly be signed up for another year. The list will still be good enough to challenge if they fix a couple of holes and sort out the mess they’ve created in the coaching department.

The last two weeks have shown how poor our defensive smalls are without him. He’s still playing good footy so no reason to move him on when he would accept a bargain basement one year deal and he’s best 22 still.

I’d see if anyone wanted Lachie Hunter. He just doesn’t add anything anymore.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul here but genuinely think Bailey Dale would be a great wingman.

ive never seen us turn up our toes so easily and often as this year.

our presence just vanished after half time against both Brisb and Syd, you could feel it, that must feel great for the opposition

our drafting/trading priority should be some mongrel. we have alot of passive players, we are the only team that doesnt appeal for deliberate out of bounds consistently, we were even awarded one last night we didnt appeal for (not that you have to appeal to get one), just shows we are not anywhere near competitive/ agressive enough.

Hunter has had a shocking year when he has played. Mentally he hasn’t been there for whatever reason.

But he is contracted so not sure how you would move him on, his trade value would also be the lowest it has been in his career so not sure why you’d try to move him on for peanuts?

Not really sure why you quoted me about Hunter when I never mentioned him

at least Hunter wont want alot to extend or resign. its the only positive of the season that list management becomes a bit easier when many senior players underperform

i noticed an article on AFL website saying Lobb's value is sky high,

although Lobb is perfect for us i wouldnt overpay for a 30yo who has had a patchy career

Just thought he could have been in your column of players that were past it or on the outer. Agree there is no point in trading him for nothing.

We lost King, Corey and Hansen in the space of two years and replaced them with no-namers.

I think this has had a big influence.
The soft cap has played a role here, pretty sure beveridge’s new contract when the saints were sniffing around was just before the soft cap and I think you will find he is one of the highest paid senior coaches in the AFL

King, Corey and Hansen must have been on a really sh** wage then…

KPD is the main priority, but the last couple of weeks have shown we also need a small defender. Cameron & Papley both tore us up with Duryea out, even making us miss Daniel whose defensive work sometimes gets underrated.

A small forward ourselves would be nice, but is a bit down the list and we probably can’t fix it all in one off-season.

We have to ask the question about Gaff as well. Eagles aren’t doing anything by the end of his career, they are in a rebuild and his trade value shouldn’t be too high in that position for a 30 year old. We would have cap space to fill our needs, as I expect Dunkley to leave and JJ will either move on or have to accept a massive pay cut to stay. Unfortunately Dunks would have signed by now if he actually wanted to stay and JJ hasn’t repaid the contract he was given.

For trade and draft, Dunkley and our 2022 & 2023 first rounders need to be on the table. Realistically, it’s 3 first round picks that we need to be bold with to fix our list. Shake players loose if we have to.

Be even bolder, Clarko would attract players himself!

This isn’t an excuse. Simply poor management. Every decent team seems to find good assistants
