Hunter was huge last year, and is our strongest wing with his ability to push back. I'd be keeping him unless he wanted to go. Duryea also needs to he signed as he's our best small defender.

Wallis, Martin, Butler, McComb, Schache to be delisted. Dunkley will leave. Resign the rest with only West and Smith getting multiple years.

The reality is we’ve also had a few players on big deals that have provided next to nothing this season. Hunter, JJ & Bruce should be top 10 performers for the club but for various reasons have contributed zilch.

This isn’t an excuse. Simply poor management. Every decent team seems to find good assistants
Who are the decent teams you are referring to?

Of the top 8:
Melbourne - Goodwin was close to being on the way out when the cap came in wouldn’t be on a lot, next contract will be the big one. As a result they have managed to have valuable assistants in Williams, Yze and Chaplin plus Richardson as GM of football performance.

Brisbane - fagan wouldn’t be on a lot outside of Cam Bruce their assistants are Hudson, Adcock and Davis.

Carlton - Voss wouldn’t be on a lot and they chased Hansen and could pay him more. Outside of that they have hamil and Clarke a guy from hawks and suns.

Collingwood - McRae would not be on much which has allowed them to bring in Bolton and Leppitsch and then fill the other roles with ex-players.

Fremantle - longmuir wouldn’t be on a heap and they went and got experienced assistants in Boyd, Carr and Corey.

Geelong - probably the anomaly as Scott would be on a bit and they have experienced guys in lappin and Egan and then jobs for the boys. But we all know they get people for the lifestyle down there.

Richmond - Hardwick would be on a bit but they only really have Kingsley and Teague under him then lesser names.

ST Kilda - Ratten wouldn’t be on much and they have invested in assistants in Lade and Enright.

Sydney - Longmire would be on a decent contract given the interest from north. They have solid assistants in Matthews, McVeigh and Cox but they are guys that don’t seem to get interest from else where.

We lost King who went to the suns where Dew would be lowly paid.

It’s not an excuse but facts outside of Geelong the top teams mostly have a low-mid range paid senior coach and quality assistants. We have a high paid senior coach and nobody assistants.

He was and I’ve always stuck up for him when others have been quick to write him off but I’m just not sure he’s what we need and he’s got a few more years of really big dollars - I almost think now we’d be better off with his salary off the books and build around Williams & Bedendo on the wings going forward - just not sure his game suits us enough to be worth the coin he’s on.

I know we’re not going to get much in a trade but the salary relief would be huge and allow us to target more important areas - he’s not exactly the most professional bloke either

Players I would be looking at this off season to bring in.

Logue - could be a good KPD for us, decent size, right age bracket and out of contract I believe.

Lobb - only here due to the rumours I am not fussed either way with him I see the upside and the downside of him. For the right price or in a package deal with Logue worth a shot

Nathan Broad - would strengthen our defence, is out of contract, wouldn’t break the bank in terms of trade value or contract.

Xavier Duursma - seems out of favour at port, would be best 22 on a wing for us, contracted to 2024 though and with Amon likely to leave may be difficult but I would ask the question.

McGovern - concern with his recent injuries and massive salary but if he passed a medical and west coast were willing to cover a portion of his wage next season would be well worth a crack.

Barrass - Probably unlikely and would cost a lot given his contract status but if west coast decide to rebuild fully we need to ask the question.

Curtis Taylor - Crafty around goals, can take a grab, has a lot of upside, is out of contract.

We lost King, Corey and Hansen in the space of two years and replaced them with no-namers.

I think this has had a big influence.
Whilst I agree with the sentiment I’m not sure it’s ever been a crime to be a coach and not be a very well known name.

I’d target Kamdyn McIntosh for the wing.

Can’t see that Lobb is the answer. He isn’t a great forward and we have plenty tall forwards. He ain’t a good ruck and I would much rather play Darcy:Schache in at role if we even want that role played.

Next year Bruce is the in and the problem is that if we play him - JUH probably doesn’t play. Lobb is better than JUH now but this will likely change next season and if not we ****** JUHs development by not playing him - give him another preseason and watch what he will become. Bruce, Naughton and JUH is a great three and we have way more problems elsewhere.

He’s kicked more goals then anyone bar Naughton. We don’t have plenty of talls that are consistent AFL standard

The soft cap has played a role here, pretty sure beveridge’s new contract when the saints were sniffing around was just before the soft cap and I think you will find he is one of the highest paid senior coaches in the AFL
This I get but others (players) have renegotiated contracts to lower pressure on the team balance sheet, maybe Bevo could look at that. This team first approach only works when everyone buys in. That being said, I have no idea what he is on, or if he has done this so if he has, or he is already paid unders then I retract this. I think we also need to get rid of some periphery soft cap personnel, whilst other teams invested in coaches we invested in a happy happy clap clap team that has clearly not worked.

Naughton-Bruce-Lobb with JUH and Darcy as options if Bruce is cooked or any other injuries occur is pretty solid. Surrounded by West and Weightman that could actually be a really good forward line while solving our massive 2nd ruck issue (a lot of talk about the deplorable backline and rightly so, but 2nd ruck has been killing us for years).

Lobb is in good form but I'd be surprised if we had to overpay. Assuming this all ties into their recruitment of Jackson, we're helping them clear the way both in terms of salary and by freeing up the spot on-field. Our two clubs have a pretty good relationship at the trade table too.

We have a few holes to plug. Backline is most glaring but we can't sleep on our 2nd ruck woes. Yes that player could be the much cheaper Darcy, but we're in a position where Darcy (and Marra) are really going to have to earn their spot as young KPPs. Next year, that is. Should be getting games into them now while it's a write off season.

What I would do with the uncontracted players:

Keep:
Bailey Smith
Rhylee West
Riley Garcia
Cody Raak (Cat B)
Charlie Parker (R)

Keep depending on:
Toby McLean (no more injuries this season)
Jason Johannisen (massive pay cut)
Josh Dunkley (wants to stay)

Delist/Trade
Josh Schache
Zaine Cordy
Louis Butler
Robbie McComb (R)

Retire:
Stefan Martin
Mitch Wallis
Taylor Duryea

That’s anywhere from 6-9 senior list spots.

Contracted guys if an offer came for either crozier or sweet they can go.
I would keep Duryea, the rest of the outs I agree with.

Logue and Lobb both fill issues we have on the list. Darcy to play 3rd tall back for next couple of years while he develops

Lobb isn’t going to cost all that much in terms of picks given his age, all the media talk is crap.

Logue probably costs a bit but would like to hold onto our 1st rounder and recruit best tall back, looks like that is Busslinger at the moment and maybe in the pick 5 to 10 range

Cordy I think will move on

Wallis and Martin are finished

Butler probably goes, and wouldn’t bother with McComb but the love child will get another year

Smith is the only priority signing, I would resign West, and JJ gets a much reduced deal. Then again he may choose to move on to play half back somewhere

Keath, McLean, Garcia and Duryea on 1 year deals they ain’t going anywhere else

Schache I’m not sure on, we are ok for key forwards, he clearly isn’t a key back and not a ruck forward so I wouldn’t resign him, particularly if we get Lobb

Crozier has a year left on contract, he isn’t getting a look in with us so he should look for opportunities elsewhere.

Dunkley is the big one and will have a lot of sides interested in his services, we will not be blindsided like 2 years ago. If it helps facilitating Louge trade in, keeping or receiving first round picks and freeing cap space it will be beneficial for both him and dogs to part ways.

On top of that I would buy Sam Power a big broom for Xmas as 2023 needs to be a clean out year with Scott, Gardiner, Roarke Smith, Hannan, McNeil, Sweet, Crozier all off contract

If there’s no big name defenders worthy of trading our first pick for this year we just have to try and trade up and take Busswhatever.

English, Naughty, Jamarra, Darcy, Buss would be the makings of the first truly great spine we’ve had in years. Still time for our midfield to be in their primes with them too - Baz and West will be young, Dunks if still around will be a beast at 27/28. Everyone seems to write off midfielders at 30 when they’re constantly playing career best footy into their early 30s. Bont & Macrae will still be top 10 players to 33. Only big loss will be Libba and Adzy but I’m not as worried about covering him tbh - can find similar talents through FA most years.

Our A graders at either end in Cody, Dale, Daniel and Richards will be in their prime.

Bedendo will be an A grader, I’m sold.

More gaps will open up but none that can’t be filled so long as we have the spine and midfield sorted.

This list can compete for the best part of the next 6-8 years but we need to transition right now as in its current state, and under the current management is being pissed away.

I really struggle to watch us play. Even the replay makes me angry.

My hope is for draft picks, as I don’t see a good KPD coming to us now. Happy to be wrong but….

We need tactical change and multiple KPD drafted in this draft. Harley/Busslinger first round and Van Es later.
