No resource we have (Schache) that could be turned into a competent key defender should be sacrificed. Would rather keep Schache as a forward, but if this is not possible, switch him to the backline permanently for a year or two, and give ourselves a chance of maybe finding something.

Time to give up on Schache. Delist

I might be wrong here but I feel like he's actually played mostly in defence at VFL level for the past couple of years? I'm not sure he's AFL standard in any position tbh.
He has, been very solid in defense for Casey
Even back during his first few years there

I think Schache is a fair comparison, Weideman is quicker but Schache's a better field kick.
I'm not sold on Weideman or Frampton but there was an interview a while back where Power mentioned a forward becoming a defender.
Wasn’t it a defender becoming a forward? I remember because it made little sense as we are ok for forwards.

Why not have a free swing and see if he can play back? He is already on the list so would cost nothing
We did try it last year

Wiedeman as a defender? lol, he’s barely making it as a forward. Just because a couple of players carve a decent career out of a move back, it doesn’t mean we need to try and Beveridge a forward into a defender when we can just go out and get a defender.

I’ll be the minority here.. happy to cop a smashing.. but if we’re getting Lobb next year, and probably aren’t doing damage this season, I’d be playing Naughton back the last 5 games.
See how the forward line goes with Jamarra, Bruce and a resting ruck.

Bevo is clearly trialling things.

What’s the harm?

Our tall forwards got pantsed tonight. Granted the delivery was absolutely woeful at times and of course Bruce will get much better but Wilkie and Battle played career best games tonight.

And FWIW Bruce has never done well without a dominant KPF alongside him. He's struggled unless he is beside Riewoldt or Naughton.

Naughton would have kicked 4+ tonight.

Still really wanna see Tim spend 40-50% fwd. the amount of times we kicked it over their heads tonight was shameful.

Really just wanna see how that structure works.

Going by Bevo's presser, we will revert back to one ruck next week.

I don't agree with it and Ive always been a 2 ruck fan but sounds as though Bev wants Naughton, Bruce, Jamarra.

The sooner Darcy comes along the better. He's the obvious solution as soon as he's ready.

Yep. It’ll mean Buku resting ruck I reckon. Which I despise so much.

Didn’t watch too closely tonight but seems like English rucked majority of the game again? If it’s English and a part timer sure that’s the go but if Sweets in the team surely the best use of both of them would be Sweet to majority ruck.

We’re so obviously better with Naughton forward but are we almost net better off with him back over Gardner and Bruce, Jamarra & English/Lobb forward even though we’d take an obvious hit forward.

It just makes it so hard as Naughton, Jamarra and Bruce can’t ruck, I’d be more than happy to keep Naughty forward and play those 3 if one could do genuine ruck minutes, which our midfield needs. But they can’t, so do we get more fixing our backline with Naughty and replacing him with a forward/ruck.

Idk tbh, we just need to make a call and stick with it week in week out and see what happens, we’re never going to find our best with the revolving door of 2 rucks/1 ruck, 3 forwards/2 forwards etc it’s just to hard to build consistency and cohesion. Make a decision either way and just see it out for a block of games

I’m ready for experimenting but I know it won’t happen. Start prepping for Lobb/Darcy in 2023.

I reckon Sweet rucked 25% tonight and wouldn’t have got much overall game time outside of that. Not sustainable unless Tim plays more forward.

I’m keen to see those 3 together but even then throwing in Darcy to fix up the ruck situation, how do you fit them all?

If Bruce finds his best you could realistically be looking at 3 years of Naughty, Bruce and Jamarra playing good footy - not sure where that leaves Darcy?

I know you’re keen to see Jamarra back and I’m open to it but I still don’t know if he’s really what we need back there and I’m not sure Bev would try it anyway - plus I love his goalsense and what that brings to the forward line, it’s a lot lot different to what Naughty/Bruce offer.

Could Bruce just be a big lump at FB to wrestle with the gorillas and release Keath to CHB with Buku 3rd? Leaving Naughty, Jamarra and for now English/Sweet and going forward English/Lobb and then English/Darcy? Would solve a lot of issues, would love to use the rest of the year to at least trial it considering I can’t see us making finals

If Jamarra breaks out next season, Bruce finds form again and we get Lobb, along with Darcy developing fast, I think we can move Naughty back. There’s a lot of maybes in there though. I just wanna see how it looks now.

Yeah it would definitely take Jamarra breaking out in a big way for me to consider it I think

doggies ftw I am a firm believer that you don't require high end talent to create high end defenders. We saw it tonight with Wilkie. He's a rookie selection and he was clearly 2nd best on ground behind bont tonight in my view.
So many high end intercept defenders in the competition are actually late selections. Our 2016 defence was basically rookie selections and delisted free agents.

Sicily, Ballard, Collins, Luke Ryan, Jeremy Howe, Marcus Adams, Wilkie, Alir, Grimes, Mcgovern, Stewart, Ridley, Balta.

I could go on an on. I bet none of them were top 15-20 draft selections. They are easy to find.

Paddy Mccartin despite being a number 1 selection was basically classified as the delisted free agent and easy to obtain. Now he leads 2022 intercepts.

Personally imo you build the forward line around Naughton with the guaranteed other player being Darcy (due to his 2nd ruck potential). Then either make the decision to play Bruce forward and Jamarra back or JUH forward and push bruce back. Maybe the latter due to long term development.

Naughtons is also high risk with clangers in defence in my view. Not sure you want him kicking out of defensive 50 too often.

Cooper Sharman looked alright tonight.

Came here to post the same thing.

Moves and reads the play well. Good skill and decision making.

Not sure what his defensive game is like, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t come on well for the Saints.
