We haven't done too badly in recent years when bringing in older blokes with AFL experience who were on the other side of 24 for cheap. Duryea, Crozier (for a while), Suckling, Biggs, Lloyd etc. A few misses like O'Brien but odds are at the very least he should help boost our bottom 6 which is a weak point.

Was one of my son’s good mates in his teenage years. He’s focussed and loves playing footy, a bit of a joker but an excellent trainer and will get the most of himself he can.

My fav Harmes story
Is he was at the Cranbourne RSL for a poker night

my parents watched him walk out of the area with decent amount of coin, breatho himself, smiled and then had a 10 min chat with my parents

Interesting to see how we find midfield minutes for Harmes considering we have already demoted Macrae and Baz.

Different strengths and we are definitely lacking a defensive mid since losing Dunkley (though I wouldn’t get my hopes up about him tagging anyone) but overall that problem persists or gets worse. Caleb is an easy candidate to remove from the midfield. But we would suffer if we removed Bont, Libba or Treloar out of receiving the majority of minutes in there.

I hope the answer isn’t that he is going to boot West out of the side. Scott - would be fine with that change.

"Just get me there"

Harmes. James Harmes.

Caleb in the middle urks me to no end. Doesn't have the leg drive to free himself from congestion, no great speed or tackling ability and isn't one to provide a 60 metre kick deep into forward 50 from centre bounces.

Moving him into the midfield was a massive mistake imo. Watching jai newcombe use him as a speed bump on the way to 40 plus touches and effectively torching our season was an embarassing decision in the coaches box. .

Hi coach, do something about Harmes who is dominating around ground.
This was a quick comment I made during our recent VFL Final against Casey. He was certainly Casey's best player for at least the first 3 quarters. He will be more useful to us than some of the fringe types that we have regularly selected.

Shouldn't Caleb play wing?

I thought Caleb tried his best and had some good games, but his DE% took a massive hit, and he’s a traffic cone defensively. Not the answer to losing Dunks that’s for sure.

Unfortunately the stand rule neutered Caleb’s usefulness down back too. Dales kicks and JJ’s runs (when he’s not injured) are more useful. And assuming Coffield is available, the emergence of Richards…I think moving Caleb to the middle was about trying to save his career as much as it was getting creative with the hole Dunkley left.

I do think it would be best to get him back in the backline somehow, and give him license to really use his footy brain to make risky plays like the good teams are doing. But it’s not so easy to just move that magnet. Think his spot may be in question, although he’s a favourite for doing whatever we ask of him.

Realistically he's not in the opening centre bounce line-up but it certainly gives us greater flexibility. He can play all over the ground, offering some speed and work rate, and then pinch hit for a mid if they need a rest, or if we want to put Treloar on the wing, or if we need somebody to be more defensively minded and man an oppo mid who's taking hold of us.

Personally I think it was a mistake to offer him the contract that we did. Imo we should have lowballed him, made him look elsewhere then grab the value via trade.

His lack of power is a genuine problem, he doesn’t execute the kicks that he did 3-4 seasons ago and anywhere you put him his lack of size and physicality doesn’t allow him to contribute defensively. Half back flankers are easy to replace.

How about we take the Hawks deal for Baz of 3+F1, then trade 3 and 4 to Wet Toast for 1 and take Reid?

Personally I would keep 3 and 4 and take both picks to the draft, but if Reid is that good would we?

Zero chance the Hawks are offering this, their F1 is almost certainly a top 6 pick. Yes they made strides this past season but still ended up with less wins than the year before. They'll just wait a year and get Baz for half the cost if he really wants to leave.

Hawks aren't offering that though and we'd throw in Bontempelli if they did.

3+1 for Harmes... I don't hold a lot of trust in our team right now.

I think we tried everyone on Newcombe that day. I can see Macrae, Smith, Caleb and Bont all on him at different stoppages.

Hopefully we actually use Harmes to shut players down when they're having a day out.

Here are the matchup numbers from that day (matchups are defined as who is on who at the previous stoppage)...

Smith was the biggest liability against him, 28 minutes for just 3 disposals and not 1 contested.
