This - if they want them they pay for them, not the rest of the league.
Defeats the purpose of FA then.

Keep FA as is, remove compo completely. If your player is restricted you can force them to a contract and a trade anyway, if your player is unrestricted well you haven’t prioritised them anyway. Swings & roundabouts.

Allow clubs to trade uncontracted, non free agents to wherever they want.

If clubs need support for being on the bottom, offer them support in the way of salary cap relief NEVER draft picks. You don’t need draft picks to get off the bottom of the ladder ffs, salary cap allows them to attract free agents & role players by offering more money.

It’s literally that simple.

The purpose of free agency isn't to let clubs get a free player. It's to make it possible for long serving players to move to a club of their choice.

I don't think you can eliminate compensation. Big clubs already have an advantage when it comes to luring players with their additional sponsorship/coterie group money. I firmly believe it shouldn't be tied to ladder position. There shouldn't be incentive for clubs at the bottom to push out experienced players which currently there is.

I also think the club signing the player should give up something. As soon as the AFL makes compensation picks materialise it opens the system to manipulation.

The best way I can see it working is that the club signing a free agent must make up the points for whatever compensation pick is awarded in the same way father son or academy bids are matched.

So in the Ben McKay example, if Essendon offer a contract enough for a band 1 compensation pick which I think should be mid first round maximum, they then have to give up picks to the value of pick 11. They can trade it first rounders etc provided they get the points.

The compensation tiers would need to be clear to every club, not hidden by the AFL, so that every club knows exactly what they are working with.

Do the "big clubs" have an advantage though?

Outside of Richmond getting Lynch what other "big club" has signed anything of note

I actually don’t mind the James Harmes pick up

Also agree about compensation. I think give them extra list spots and extra soft cap for development coaching.
Let them bring in bunch of state league talent and give them resources to develop the talent.

It's unfair for young men who have worked so hard to get drafted high to go to clubs with horrible development and potentially ruin their careers.

Sure, what Harmes could he do

Most definitely they do, although maybe I should have used a different term to big club.

Some clubs have great capacity to incentivise players outside of the salary cap.

It's went Essendon, Carlton and Geelong always seem to be 'destination clubs'

People doubting the Harmes signing-

In a 2 week period we had a mediocre Newcombe have 40 + Goal and bang average Tim Kelly have 32 against us which rooted our finals charge, Having someone who can genuinely shut them down will make a massive difference

Funnily enough i'm pretty sure Gold Coast have signed the most free agents so not sure they do,

They can get the mid tier ones like McStay for less sure but I don't think their advantage is as much as you think
