Hello Eagles fans!

The embedded resources below are kept up to date by the trade board mods (as much as possible – we are human after all). Enjoy!

Thought Freo did well with the Port pick for next year.
Tougher draw for Port finishing top 6. Ken signed contract year = yoyo' ing out of the finals.
Good gamble.
They did. Even if Port finish top 4 again , given that freo pick is going to end up around 30 it's good business. And as we've seen this year the bottom of rnd 1 is going to continue to be compromised (two norf picks already in 24) so getting in before that for two 2nd round picks is really good imo.

If Gov (multiple AAs) left in 2018 for over a million a year on a multi year contract we would have got pick 19. McKay leaves for far less (given all the pay increases in 5 years) and NM get pick 3. So the lesser player provided the better compensation when it should be the other way around. How stupid is this?

Ditto Gaff if he at the same time.

Ports F1 for Freos F2 and what is currently pick 24

On 2023 finishes that a net loss of 380 points (equivalent to pick 43)

If Port slide to 9th and Freo move up to 10th then it’s basically break even

Freo betting on themselves to improve whilst simultaneously hoping Port back up a good year with a poor one is a solid bet it must be said. Especially given it’s unlikely Freo perform worse or port get significantly better

It's the same compo, band 1.

Anyone inquired about Stenglein being thrown in with our pick 1 as a sweetener for Hawks pick 4, DGB, Brockman and Chance Bateman yet?

Who says no?

So in theory a club could bottom out when their top 4 players are all out of contract, offer them just under the band 1 cap, meaning that any FA offers would have to be band 1, and then receive picks 2, 3, 4 and 5?

Seems like a dumb system

It may be. But is there a better one apart from “no compo”.

Bottom clubs need a way to rebuild and losing top 4 players would set rebuild back 3-5 years without compo.

Don't have access to read this but from someone copying on the hawks board:

"West Coast wants to take Tongala prodigy Harley Reid with the first pick in the national draft unless North Melbourne is prepared to swap picks 2 and 3

The Eagles have settled on Reid as their clear top target and were left impressed by his interview at the draft combine last week, with some likening his presence to Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge."

Seems pretty definitive - huge if true.

Gees you're questioning any club list management that would allow the best four players on the list all get to free agency at the same time.

West Coast wants to take Tongala prodigy Harley Reid with the first pick in the national draft unless North Melbourne is prepared to swap picks 2 and 3.
The Eagles have settled on Reid as their clear top target and were left impressed by his interview at the draft combine last week, with some likening his presence to Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge.

North Melbourne received pick 3 as free agency compensation for the departure of full-back Ben McKay to Essendon on Tuesday, giving the Roos a huge arsenal of draft picks, including 2, 3, 15 and 21 to strike a deal with West Coast.

But any hopes the Roos had of securing pick 1 have taken a hit as the Eagles look unlikely to cough it up unless North hands over picks 2 and 3 in return, setting a high bar for one of the biggest trades of the post-season.

That asking price could be too steep for the Kangaroos, who are believed to be looking at line-breaking left-footer Colby McKercher at pick 2 and dangerous goalkicking midfielder Zane Duursma at pick 3, according to recruiters.

It means Hawthorn could snare speedy small forward Nick Watson at pick 4, the Western Bulldogs snap up jet midfielder Ryley Sanders at pick 5, and Melbourne could look at forward Nate Caddy or key defender Daniel Curtin at pick 6.

There is a belief Western Australian Curtin could be sliding down clubs’ draft orders, meaning the Giants face the prospect of landing Curtin if he falls as far as pick 7.

Another option is for North Melbourne to acquire pick 11 in a trade with Gold Coast and offer West Coast picks 2, 11 and a future first-round pick for pick 1, but that still may not be enough to satisfy the Eagles.

Recruiting sources on Tuesday said it seemed likely West Coast would keep pick 1 rather than trade it out, unless North parted with picks 2 and 3 in one of the biggest pick swaps in AFL trade history.

The Kangaroos have four picks inside the top 21 selections to help strike a deal with West Coast after the free agency compensation for McKay went through as expected on Tuesday morning.

The Roos also have three future picks (from next year) to deal out as part of the AFL’s draft assistance package.

North did not match Essendon’s offer to McKay, which is believed to be less than $800,000 a year. The compensation selection is a reward for the way the Roos have handled McKay’s situation this year, delaying on offering the defender a new deal.

Pick 3 as free agency compensation is a massive boost for North Melbourne, which could have one of the most talented lists in the competition in a few years following several drafts loading up on high-end talent.

However, clubs are certain North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson would love Reid, who is a powerful goalkicker and dominant forward-half ball-winner in the same mould as Dustin Martin.

The Eagles want to take Reid in the belief he is a generational talent and someone they could not pass up after two years down the bottom of the ladder.

Reid told the Eagles he would have no problems moving interstate to play AFL.

North Melbourne already has a stack of first-round players in the engine room including brilliant ballwinners Harry Sheezel, who won a best and fairest in his first year, hard nut George Wardlaw, Luke Davies-Uniacke, pick three Will Phillips, slick prime mover Tarryn Thomas and goal kicker Jaidyn Stephenson.

Plus there are high hopes for knee victim Brayden George, who the Roos took at pick 26 last year.

the thing we have lost sight of is bottom clubs have a way to rebuild, it's called the national draft, where picks are handed out in reverse order of the table.

no one is suggesting 'no compo', but the formula dependent on salary and ladder position alone doesn't seem to be working equitably

WCE_phil I recall you saying you thought the AFL would be playing silly buggers if McKay compo came in at Band 1, can you confirm this given the other compo picks and that the AFL is taking the piss this FA period?

The AFL found a little unknown AGE clause which favoured McKay to justify the Pick 3 Compo ..

If you're the worst team in the league, it's highly unlkelt that you have 4 players hitting free agency at the same time that would be worth offers that would trigger round 1 compo.

If for example we'd been in the situation, i think the only player who meets the threshold (8+ years of service) that would trigger an offer that would have given band 1, would have been Barass. Everyone else is either too old (McGovern/Darling/Yeo), or not enough service time (Allen/Ryan/Hough).
