TOTALLY disagree there ball use has never been his problem.
He always been classy user of the ball.
It was he played incredibly outside flanker role and didn't impact a game.
His current game is nothing like Muzungu.
It all changed in the last year under Schofield at Subiaco, Jarrad put him in the centre and he totally changed his
game.
He has become this classy centreman that uses the ball so well and goes forward and kick goals.
The games I watched of subi he totally stood out and class above what was out there.
I think he can be better than Masten and Hutchings and push Redden as well.
much better ball user than Redden.
I believe he is the best mature age player I have seen in years.

Just on Schofield going to be a very very good coach.

Sorry, I totally missed this RE.

I have to say, from what I've heard he wasn't always a classy ball user - far from it, but I'm not in a position to say that I know Menegola hasn't improved his kicking to a classy level, although I'm sceptical. As a rule players rarely improve their disposal to that degree but there's the occasional guy who manages it, so why not Menegola?

I did notice that Knightmare posted this about Sam not long after my original post, which is somewhere between what I'm saying (poor kick) and what you're saying (much improved kick).

"As for Menegola. Nice height, size and physical profile. Elite endurance runner. Strong scoreboard impact through the midfield this year. Strong mark overhead. Stoppage work good. Production strong. As for weaknesses. Relatively can lack composure, ball use can lack consistency but has come a long way in these areas and has transitioned from freak endurance athlete to a good footballer."

Admittedly, that probably places you closer to the pin.

With the other stuff I'm happy to bow to your superior knowledge. I suspect that our difference of opinion here is due to me judging Sam from 12 months ago while you've seen him much more recently.

Having said that, I'll still eat my hat if he ends up better than Masten or Redden... But it won't be the first time I've eaten a hat.

Am i the only one who thinks Barrass wouldn't be out of his depth starting in our senior side? Not that i'd start him over E-Mac, Gov or Schofield.

From what we saw of him, his development has come on in leaps and bounds. That game against Adelaide where we were flogged he looked completely comfortable playing his role and taking strong contested grabs (ala Mitts) in the back half.

I'm very content with where he is at. And because of that fact, i think we'll be one KPD in surplus to our needs next year. I'd prefer not to draft another developing KPD right now and see what happens at next years trade/FA period with Brown.

the 2 finals in the WAFL against Freo and West Perth he was well well beaten so I have cooled on him

I think he looked pretty good in that game and took some nice grabs. But he was also dominated one-on-one and caught out of position a few times, which to be fair you might expect from a rookie defender. He's a great prospect and showed good signs but will have to fight for games this year.

I was at that game and from what I saw he had his arse handed to him. It got so bad that his body language went down the toilet and he seemed to give up late in the game.

Hope I'm wrong here but that game really turned me off Barrass.

Our whole team was pantsed that game. Taylor walker took 12 grabs FFS, because our midfield didn't show up (apart from Sheed) and he was spoon fed i50 entries. He made rookie errors that any rookie would make, which could have been put down to being overawed.

I know he was dropped after, and probably just didn't give a **** for the rest of the year in the WAFL, but i liked what i saw.

Meh, don't think he's a gun but i'd be comfortable if he had to step up again due to injuries. You can't teach his contested marking.

i may be missing something simple here, i understand the academy system and how the picks work, but what happens if the clubs decided not to bid on the academy players since they know all the clubs will be getting them anyway.

There's a article from The Age I'm unable to link it ,that says he's working on his speed and trying to improve on his weaknesses blah blah didn't make the most of his opportunities bla blah blah , sounding desperate for another go .

Well reading about O'Brien I'd be keen to rookie list him if this is a weak draft. He's the Lions player that Leppitch strangled. Won the B&F for the Lions two's by a country mile and had some really interesting numbers when he played full games for the Lions. He's only 24.

Wonder what inside info Yeo and Redden may have on him. The Leppitch clash wouldn't have helped his standing but from reports and observations Leppitch is a bit of a hot head.

"After dominating games in the NEAFL, including a 52-disposal match against the Swans in August this year, seven of his 13 AFL matches were spent in the vest.

From eight games this year, he was ranked the ninth most effective centre clearance player in the competition. The Lions calculated an 18 per cent differential winning the clearances based on his presence at the centre bounce. "

I like that inside mid clearance work stat. 52 possessions against the Swans reserves side isn't shabby.

It's a No for me on menegola , O'Brien and any other mature age player apart from Adams with a late pick . That is also due to our KPD plight this year .
We have Hutchins , Ellis , duggan , Nelson , Newman , butler , brown , giles , barrass , McInness , lamb , bennell , tunbridge
On the edge of the 22 , depth or young players we are wanting to get games into .

Prefer to take best available young mid with our first pick.

Best available player of any type with our second

And project KPP ( or Adams ) and ruck with 3rd and rookie pick
.
Much prefer to put our time and resources into raw athletic talls that need development than more mature rejects like Lucas

All the talk about Menegola reminds me of Matt Panos last year, how has he (Panos) gone this year? Is Menegola a better prospect than Panos was last year?

I'm not sure how ready barrass is going by his performance this season. Still young so you would expect him to get pushed off the ball at a contest like happened a few times this year.a preseason or 2 in the gym should do him the world of good.
Having said that with him waiting in the wings, brown still hanging around,Schofield bulking up I would say our kpds would be our best stocked area.
Kpf would be an area to strengthen up this draft I reckon

swannies whats your thoughts on McCasker?
Became a bigger fan towards the end of the year. Good athletically, tends to run under the ball a bit though, but has a good amount of competitiveness and agro.

But Magola could be the next Barlow! Clearly none of you have ever played football.

I'm with you on Barrass, I am very comfortable with where he is at. I also wouldn't have minded trading Brown this year to open up opportunities for him.

As for his game against Adelaide, he got caught out of position but the lack of pressure through the midfield and speed of ball movement did not help. This was made worse when you think our backs are trying to guard space and set up the web, next thing they have to adjust to pick up a man with the ball moving at lightning speed. Yes he was pushed off the ball a few times but he was playing on big bodies and seasoned Giants and starting from a disadvantaged position anyway. I hope he gets some games next year.

I can't speak to his WAFL form.

Menagola was injured for the 1st half of the year but was outstanding in the 12 games he played. I think he was BOG in 6 games and polled 41 votes in thE Sandover medal to finish 3 rd . No harm to add to our list as he appears to be way out in front of most WCE players in WAFL .
