I dont agree with the notion that we shouldn't chase Cerra because we're apparently about to drop off a cliff.

The hawthorn example is a poor one. They pretty much ignored the draft, certainly early picks for years and topped up every off season. We haven't traded for anyone since 2016. We have a better draft hand this year than hawks have ever had. I dont think we'll push our senior guys out to other clubs or into retirement. They may not get selected in the senior team every week but thats okay.

Cerra is only 21 and offers something we don't currently have with his class, decision making and foot skills. An ultimate professional on and off field too apparently.

Providing we don't cough up way too much for him I think we'd be silly not to accommodate him if the opportunity arises.
The way we butcher the ball into our F50.That alone should make Cerra a must.
As stated he's only 21.10 good years left in him.
The way things are going this season our pick will be around 9ish.That should satisfy Freo with maybe a swap of picks later in the draft.
Green trade might be a tad more difficult but could be achieved.CJ & Pick 16ish.
Gives us our Midfield for the next 10yrs.
Yeah we're giving up a great draft hand but it also has been mentioned in afl circles that this years draft is still very much not clear cut as in the past outside Daicos & Horne.
I guess it'll be all upto Clark and his opinion but with Cerra & Green still young enough i think its a no brainer.

bolton will be an eagle next year
we will get another rioli as part of the trade
Eagles cap is tighter than ours the club has also made a deal with its players not to go after big signings because they all took a pay cut due to Covid
Only WA club that would be able to entertain an offer for Bolton that would eclipse ours is Freo

Astbury, Houli to retire.
Caddy, Chol to be traded.
Egg, Garth, Naish delisted.
Cumberland rookied.
Rioli, Castagna, Ross on thin ice.

Cerra for a first and a second.
Lipinski for a second.

Then head to the draft with a first and two thirds - target best available with our first (hopefully a key back) and a key back / half back / Lambert style HF with our next two picks.
The Astbury retirement would be on the provision that there is a ready made KPD early in the draft. Miller hasn't even played. Nyoun is still skinny looking.
Maybe retain astbury for one more year

If Gold Coast offered pick 3 then the AFLHQ would not approve the trade.

Don't forget the Ellis trade, which was downgraded due to a correction.
Ellis was a free agent and the compensation was from the AFL not the Gold Coast

Pick 3 for CCJ would be a trade and agreed by Gold Coast and us
The AFL have no say in the matter of what his value might be

The AFL has today announced that the AFL Commission has approved an assistance package to be provided to the Gold Coast SUNS.

At the August AFL Commission meeting the Gold Coast SUNS presented an update on their Club performance and requested special assistance, as per AFL Rules, to enable them to deliver upon their football strategy.

The AFL Executive then recommended a series of allowances to the AFL Commission that were ratified at the September AFL Commission meeting.

The AFL Commission determined the Gold Coast SUNS will receive the following assistance package:

Priority Picks
The provision of draft picks for the next 3 years (reviewable annually), including the first pick in the 2019 AFL Draft.
  • Pick #1 and first pick of the second round (currently pick #20) in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.
  • Mid-first round pick (currently pick #11) in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft.
  • First pick of the second round (currently pick #19) in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft.
Academy Access
The Gold Coast SUNS will also receive expanded academy player access for 3 years including:

  • Provision of the Darwin region as an academy zone.
  • Ability to pre-sign Gold Coast SUNS academy players (including those from Darwin) without bidding.
  • Increased rookie list, up to 10 players
The AFL will also continue to provide support through operational and strategic services.

It is important to note the assistance will be reviewed annually, and the AFL Commission reserves the right to remove future picks and / or academy access.

AFL General Counsel Andrew Dillon said it was the AFL’s view that a three-year support package was critical to providing a sustainable solution to the current challenges the Gold Cost SUNS are facing and to ensure many of the challenges of the past are not repeated.

“There is no doubt the Gold Coast SUNS have had enormous challenges throughout their short history and it is to the benefit of the entire competition that the SUNS are competitive,” Mr Dillon said.

“The AFL and football fans want a strong and even competition, and while the endeavour and intent can’t be faulted by the Gold Coast Football Club, there have been executional challenges along the journey that have impacted the on-field competitiveness of the team.

“The Club, led by Tony Cochrane and Mark Evans, will continue to build strength in the organisation and delivering on their football strategy is crucial to the club’s long-term success. The special assistance approved by the AFL Commission will contribute to this.

While the package is set for three years to provide certainty to players, staff and the entire industry, the AFL Commission retains the right to remove future picks and / or academy access based on the club’s performance.

What would stop AFLHQ putting a caveat on any future assistance to them regarding trading of 1st round draft picks
That’s not really our issue and something that would of been discussed between the AFL and the Gold Coast board before any offer is made

It it’s the price that’s needed to attract the Type of player that CCJ is I can’t imagine the AFL having issues
Similar to the Weller trade between the Gold Coast and Fremantle

By that article it implies that the program is mainly based on performance KPI and nothing to do with trading the picks in order to improve that performance
Established older players help the Gold Coast more than young draftees

I think it’s more about the Gold Coast and how they are performing and not who they are trading with
If CCJ is the player they have identified who will help them who he plays for shouldn’t be a factor

His price would be the same if he was playing for us, or North Melbourne

What is the actual likelihood of a cerra and Bolton trade

I don’t want it to happen
But when’s the last time two guns were traded for eachother?
It's highly unlikely considering Bolton wants to stay and Cerra is leaning towards leaving.

If any of our young players would be involved in a trade with for Cerra, Stack would be the one imo
He might want to return home with his girlfriend living and playing for Freo

Stack would have fu** all trade currency. More likely to be delisted
Obviously wouldn’t be a straight swap but he would easily be the one who would be the steak knives in a trade situation

It's highly unlikely considering Bolton wants to stay and Cerra is leaning towards leaving.
I think its 50/50 with Bolton.
Could go either way.
Already 2 premierships under his belt.
Big payday if he leaves. Not so if he stays.

I would assume that if we were a chance to have pick 3 involved in a potential CCJ trade that we would need to send a mid-late first back the suns way which wouldn’t be too bad of a trade for them. Especially if they then used that pick to trade for an older established player from another club to add more senior experience to their list.

Would kill two birds with one stone for them really - gain an upcoming KPF/relief ruck/foil for King and add another senior head to the playing group.

If we decided to go down the draft route rather than trading in experienced types like Cerra or Green, what would people think about doing a deal with the Suns that involved CCJ and our 2 first round picks for the Suns first 3 picks in the draft.

Would give us picks 5, 19, 24, 25, 29, 42 & 47.

Pick 5 would give us a crack at the top end of the draft, plus the ability to then pick the eyes out of the second round where we could swoop on any sliders, but can also target some list needs. Based on current rankings there is a swag of KPP talent in the late first early second round of the draft. We could also use some of those second round picks to trade for better picks in this draft or trade into the 2022 draft by helping clubs with F/S selections

If Gold Coast offered pick 3 then the AFLHQ would not approve the trade.

Don't forget the Ellis trade, which was downgraded due to a correction.

A good reminder that the kaiboshing from AFL house has been happening to us for a long long time going back to the locket trade..personally I don't think they should have any say in what picks get swapped in trade deals....

I think most of us would prefer Tom green but just can’t see gws giving him up.
Signs are pointing towards cerra wanting a return home, if we can get him maybe our lower first rd and lower second can get it done.
Then use our highest draft pick 10-12 on a kpp

Would be the best outcome for the club imo we get a ready to go mid and still able to invest in our future
Can’t see us putting up two first rounders
