May be unpopular opinion, but I agree with Sam Edmund.
If Graham was willing to tour the Port Adelaide facilities, then that tells me he is open to a move.
I wouldn't be shocked if Adelaide make a play with pick 23.

The best bit about giving 12 & 19 for TT is the way it has set a precedent for Dunkley. Lions were already struggling for points and would have been hoping for a first and a future second for Dunkley … not any more **** and friends 🤣🤣.

It’ll now be a first and F1 which will force them to trade out a quality player to get enough points for Ashcroft and Fletcher .. hahaha … suck a lemon Lions

I'm glad fans don't run RFC.

When you get a player to publicly commit to your club - YOU GET IT DONE.

Fans are obsessed about "winning" trades. As if Richmond give a * about what Twitter and BigFooty think.

You get the deals done and players will continue to want to come to the club - who cares if people think we paid overs when we have Taranto and Hopper running the midfield with Prestia.

I agree that it 'looks good' to get deals done. However, if that player was some C grade player, this whole conversation would be irrelevant. Also, 'getting the trade done'... doesn't mean we just buy into the opposition clubs demands.

It's not about 'winning trades'. It's about 'fair trades' making a better outcome for both clubs, or at least justifiable. Winning trades would be a bonus. This is a business, not under 14's.

It's a bit strange to say who cares if we paid overs just to see 2 new players running around the midfield. What happens if Prestia goes down again next year? Yes it will be good to have some good cover finally, but trades need to also focus on the next 5+ years. we SHOULD care every year that we are receiving adequate compensation for what we give.

It's about planning the short term as well as long term to keep a healthy list balance. I think Richmond usually does a good job at this so I will back them in. Losing effectively 3 first rounders in 2 years, means we will be relying heavily on our senior players and the players drafted in 2021 considering we had many early selections.

I would do that deal, but I'd keep it quiet until after the Hopper stuff is done and use the trade to get back into the top 30 of the draft.

E.g. trade Soldo, 31 and future first for Hopper and 43, then trade Graham for 23 afterwards.

We'd then go to the draft with 23 and 43.

Yeah I agree.

Sorta like 2016 where we got paid massive overs for Lids after we "overpaid" for 3x premiership midfielder Dion Prestia.

Sorry mate but I think you just answered your own question here - Taranto and Hopper are 7 year players - that is focusing on the now AND future.

We took 5 kids in the top 30 last year, the "old" narrative is going to make a lot of journos look silly if/when Sonsie, Banks and Clarke play regularly next year.

Our age demographic is very well balanced. Yes, we're lacking another young KPP but many clubs share that same issue and given we're a big destination club, we can always look at free agency.

Im sure this is going to be rehashed info from today, but its behind a paywall. Anyone got the content?

Just went back and found my post from September 7........

A deal will get done and probably on the second to last day for the drama on tv but i'm going to love the early doors knock back from GWS that will have the gullible up and about. 🤣

i was talking about Taranto here but might as well transfer it too Hopper. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it was that obvious a month ago this is how it would play out, it happens every year for at least one deal.

deal offered
knocked back ask for more
media play it up
fans get sucked in
deal goes through on 2nd last or last day for original offer lol

Just read Tarryn Thomas is on $700k. I heard JHF had a deal on the table from North so can only assume it had to be $900k? Wow what a sh1t club. Miracle we got Bolton to sign for $600k. People were linking us to Tarryn. No thanks. Getting paid $700k and carrying on like a petulant school girl. PASS!

We hold the cards with GWS and Hopper. With Taranto we've proven to be fair and reasonable. This may go to the wire. We don't need to be bent over. Our salary cap isn't about to be in breach. Can't recall the exact trades but there's been a few over the years (especially when trade period was 2 weeks long) where greedy clubs dragged it out then the other team made other moves for other players. Then ended up getting the deal done cheaper at last minute. i'll be worried if we see Hopper touring other clubs later on in the week. For now, we hold firm, failing that Graham probably stays another year and we potentially get Hopper for free next year as a FA, and bundle up for our big KPF splurge next year.
If we get Hopper for free next year, they would get compensation, end of first round, or after first pick compo.
So if they end up 10th (reasonable prediction) they would get pick 9 and receive as a maximum pick 10

Going back to our offer: 31 +1st round 2023

So if we win flag, 31 +18 = pick 8 equivalent
If we come 8th, 31 + 11 = pick 5
If we come 10th, 31 +09 = pick 4
That should be enough

and I don't understand how us paying Hopper's wages in 2023 would NOT decrease this further.

Maybe they are playing funny buggers

This is about right, the only thing in their favour is based on the contract he would get first round compo (AFL would make the formula work that way anyways). If they finish bottom 6 that’s at least pick 7. Points are not worth the same as picks, especially top 10. They would also expect, fairly given we are recruiting two of their best midfielders, that we will finish top 4. On that basis I think a slightly improved offer is warranted. Hopefully we have asked for a clear indication of what they want.

Did Geelong overpay for Jeremy Cameron? No.

Did Eagles overpay for Tim Kelly? Yes.

…but we only know this in hindsight.

Both thought they were on the cusp of a flag. Hindsight tells you Geelong’s trade was a great decision, and Eagles trade was horrendous and set the Eagles back a couple of years.

If the Cats got nervous from the Kelly failure they might have dodged Cameron and may not have a flag.

So of course it’s a balance, but Geelong’s youth 2-years ago when they got Cameron looked horrific. So they didn’t have an eye on their future at all … they were all-in for a flag. Since then Holmes, Stengle and DeKoning have all emerged as excellent youngsters… and they got a flag!

Meanwhile, some teams like Gold Coast, Roos
and Carlton have been hammering away at the draft for a decade and are still no good.

So as I’ve said many times, just like the club you have to put your stake in the ground now! Do you want TT and Hopper for 12, 19, 30 and a F1 with Soldo and a F3 coming back, or don’t you? You can’t sit on the fence now and say “I told you so” in 2026.

Do you think it’s a good deal or not ? Yes or no.

If I was Richmond I would just simply ask what is Hopper worth to us. And then pay it, both in salary and picks. If you don’t or cannot do that, then you are in the same position as all the other clubs, lining up in a queue around the block for bargains. The reason we are not in a queue is we are not shopping for bargains, we are shopping for things we need and prepared to pay the price.

So Brown like all other players has a value as do any picks we have at our disposal. If the seller wants a player and a pick if you think it is a value deal, you do it. If not, you may not get the player, we have seen these deals fall over before, and another club step in.
F1 & Soldo or Ralpsmith.

Here ya go...

AFL Trade Period: Richmond needs to increase its offer to secure Jacob Hopper

Richmond has the 31st pick in this year’s draft and one future first-rounder to play with in negotiations to get Jacob Hopper. The Giants says it isn’t enough.

Greater Western Sydney will gauge Ivan Soldo’s interest in a move to New South Wales as the potential deal-clincher in the Jacob Hopper trade to Richmond.
The Giants traded uncontracted star mid Tim Taranto for picks 12 and 19 on Monday and are now horse-trading with Richmond on a deal for contracted mid Hopper.

Richmond has only this year’s No.31 draft selection and a future first-rounder to offer for Hopper, who is arguably more valuable given he is contracted at GWS.

The Herald Sun revealed last month Canberra-raised Soldo might be a key part of the trade given he has been pushed out of the Richmond side.

The Western Bulldogs made a strong play for Soldo last year but instead he signed a three-year contract extension through to 2024, playing 13 games and none after round 19.

GWS has injury and suspension-prone Braydon Preuss, Matt Flynn and Kieren Briggs on its list of ruckmen but none has emerged as a player the club can depend upon.

Soldo is only 26 so would provide solid service to the elite GWS midfield, and given Flynn is a free agent next year it would be a prudent move to bring in an elite tap ruckman.

Richmond has few other players of real interest to GWS and has no more picks to give up so if Soldo can be convinced about a move he could be the third element along with pick 31 and the future first-rounder.

The Tigers would be confident that they could get strong ruck service out of co-captain Toby Nankervis and Ben Miller, with Noah Balta also capable of playing ruck.

The Tigers’ 206cm project ruckman Samson Ryan and Category B player Mate Colina, who is 213cm, are also on the list.

There seems little chance Hopper will be held to his contract as long as the Tigers can sweeten their current offer of those two strong picks.

“We need to strengthen it a little bit. Richmond have been great, but they only have certain assets left,” GWS football boss Jason McCartney said on Trade Radio.

“It’s been talked about a little bit about Ivan. There is something there we will do some follow up on. “If you are going to facilitate a deal on a contracted player you don’t want to be scrambling in the last couple of days. There is a lot of work going in there. He will be one we will have a conversation about and do some work on. You have to make sure your medicals check out before you push the button on any player transaction.”

“We’re mindful he has requested the trade, we will work through it. Richmond have been really good in their conversations around it.”

GWS will offer pick 43 to Melbourne for skilful half forward Toby Bedford but the Demons offered him a three-season deal and will be intent upon securing an earlier selection.

GWS currently has selections 3, 12, 19 and 21 but if they secure pick 31 from Richmond in the Hopper deal the Demons might attempt to secure that selection for Bedford.

The Giants have already secured a future second-round pick from Collingwood for small forward Bobby Hill.

I've finally figured out the purpose of Cam Luke. As far as I can tell he only ever appears alongside Cooney. His role is to make Cooney look like less of an offensively annoying dipsh1t by comparison.
Isn't he cooneys translator ?

We will need a backup though, can't go through a whole season and expect to contend if our only rucks are Nank, Ryan, with help from Miller.

Surely someone available around the league or state leagues.

And no I'm not even remotely including Colina in my thinking.

But is Soldo someone I'd be willing to trade? You bet, for a gun midfielder, absolutely.

No point having the 7footer if he's not going to be considered.

Guy has played 7 seconds of VFL, looked way off the pace.

Not even close to being considered and thus cannot be counted as one of our listed rucks. Is as "project" as projects get.

Needs another half-year in the VFL at least before we can even get any idea if he's worth the list spot, let alone capable of an appearance at AFL level.
