Interesting to see we want to trade picks 4 years in advance, it would help rebuilding sides to take 4 x first round picks in 2 years as oppossed to 4 years, and have the group of young players develop together

Don't like the idea at all. Means that clubs that are on the AFL tit will poorly manage themselves into a hole with trading of picks and then get bailed out again by the AFL who is stuck with the Sunk Cost fallacy.

What they should implement is the Cap space trading. That way you can properly manage your salary cap and not get stuck paying good B grade Role players A grade money because they are older and you had to meet the 95% threshold. St kilda is a prime example of having to keep spuds like Dunstan on good money because they had no one else to pay.

Future firsts I can get my tongue around. Future, future, future picks is too much.

Cap space "trading" not a bad idea. How does it work? I remember Suns had to get rid of a player. Suns & Giants have to pay higher salary to drafted players to retain them. So Tarranto & Hopper & Bowes end up having to be traded.

AFL sport is am amazing, but short lived careers. Playing AFL Dunstan at the Saints on big money, but no success. Players at RFC on peanuts, to accommodate Dusty & Lynchs big bucks but won flags. Good luck, bad luck

Dusty money is soon available so RFC can match bids for Baker if desired. Players at RFC like Miller might now be able to get a bigger contract. I'm fine with that.

Clubs need cap space when they are peaking on field, does it ends up North & Saints "giving" their cap space to Clubs going well.

Trading Cap space is a good idea and should be brought in ASAP Imo

It would create rebuilding teams flexibility and fast track rebuilds

GC have cap issues , Richmond trade them $1,000,000 cap space for 1 year for pick #8
This allows richmond to delist players like McIntosh , Pickett , Grimes , Prestia , Graham and get some kids into the team as well as 1-2 top picks whilst not contending.

Only works if the AFL fix the northern academy’s and how they can stockpile crap picks for elite talent

Because if Gold Coast, GWS, ect are able to trade out first rounders every year they will essentially have extra cap space constantly because there will always be clubs looking to rebuild

Thats another issue altogether but the fact they have these academy's also help other teams acquiring talent from them after they have been developed

Absolutely, I have no issue with the academy’s themselves but the AFL need to sort out the issues surrounding how players can be bid on and the picks used that is already weighted in the favour or the northern clubs before adding something else that can be exploited

Bowes was an example of already happening. Cats took him & 2 year $800k contract. For Pick 7. Gave the Suns cap space and a list spot too.

Someone wants D. Rioli, they take his salary & we get draft picks.

We trade/delist McIntosh , Pickett , Grimes , Prestia , Graham we get a shedload of cap space, & good draft picks from our 17th ladder position.

This year represents a great chance for the Tigers to be innovative.

We trade Rioli and pay half his salary from 2025-2027, we also trade Short and pay half his salary from 2025-27, in return for Gold Coast’s pick 8, pick 9 and pick 20.

We trade Baker to Freo and agree to pay $1m of his salary across 2025-26, in return for Freo’s picks 10 and picks 12.

So we enter the draft with picks 2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 20 and 21. Swap some later picks for points and get another teens pick. So 8-picks of top-22.

We then trade some picks into next years draft.

So we end up with 5 x picks in top-20 this year, and another 4-5 in top-20 next year. For the loss of Baker, Rioli and Short. Flankers and smalls. Not a gun midfielder or KPP among them. Baker is going anyway, so why not offer some ‘cash’ to improve the trade?

With so much cap space across 2025-26 with retirements and the ending of big contracts, no reason we can’t get ahead of the game with using our cap space to improve trade value.

9 x picks in the top-20 is a turbo charged rebuild, and we retain all of our key midfielders, KPP’s and promising youngsters.

So Baker is re-signing with us to then immediately get traded to Freo so we can pay some of his salary?

We will have spare salary cap, and funding Baker’s salary will help Freo retain others … and they’ll give superior picks in return.

It’s called innovation, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t look outside the square to get better picks. Or we can just trade Baker for pick-16 and use our salary cap on spuds like McIntosh and Pickett.

Do we take pick 2 to the draft or try for a ready made player like Finn Callahan from GWS, a former pick 2 from memory.

Draft. Probably 2 years of that and then look to trade into that type
