Good work to pick up 3 ready-made players and still have a 1st round pick for Wells to use.
Earliest own draft pick (i.e. not the swap of the Ablett compo for Smedts) Wellsy has had to use since he plucked a certain Joel Selwood

It's been confirmed via Patrick Keane that the trade was our compo pick plus third round pick (currently 55) for Caddy.

It's an odd one because I doubt GC will be picking that late, so they may plan to on trade that pick for something.

Either way, very good deal for us in the end.

Lost Gaz.

Got 2 Compo Picks

Won 2011 Flag.

Got Smedts. Lost Compo pick #1
Got Caddy. Lost Compo pick #2 and lost ND pick 55.

Can never replace the best player in the competition. Was never going to happen.

Given however what we have had to work with, and it is still early days, I think it's pretty much a good result.
Add to the fact we won a flag after Gaz left and these 2 guys, in regards to playing age, could be 10 years starters for the club and it certinaly appears right now to be he best of an ordinary situation.

Club should be applauded for giving us the best chance to succeed and keep that going in the future..

I have high hopes for Smedts this year.

How good is it for a player like him to be mentored by the Bartels, Chapmans and Selwoods of this world. IF he follows their lead he could be top class IMO....

He's going to get more attention soon, so it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

Smedts, Caddy , Guthrie, Murdoch, Christensen , I would like that group to put a real solid preseason , lets put it to these kids , lets their competitive juices push each other along. Lets see their thirst for pain and their yearning for excellence. Some need some size others need run but a big preseason without any hiccups would be great. Think how many years it took for SJ to get some solid preseason conditioning into him

Hopefully they will be playing quite a bit of footy together over the next few years . As you rightly point out , its a huge advantge to have Bartel and Selwood etc. Caddy for instance will have seen Ablett but someone like Selwood/Bartel will be so much more comparable.

He has Nathan Fyfe written all over him. I'm expecting huge things from young Billie in season twentythirteen. I think with a big pre season he'll be primed to explode!

Losing pick 59 may save someone's skin. If Gillies and Brown stay, then our second pick may be around 79. The club may decide its better to use that on a rookie upgrade than to get some other long shot.

Jim Boy, 2 players still have to be delisted as things currently stand

that's the first time I heard him being compared to Fyfe, good one although his kicking isn't quite as sublime but he does have the other attributes in speed, marking and some flair. Once he puts it all together, will be a pretty tough player to contain.

Don't forget the relieved cap space that let us go on a spending spree for HMac and Rivers.

Good call SC , Billy is one of the young guys that will benefit from a big preseason.
I also have very high hopes for the likes of Murdoch , Shroeder, Kersten and Walker to come along strongly with another year towards getting the battle hardened bodies like Bartel , Kelly, Selwood and Enright etc

I actually think we will be much better in 2013 as the young guys develop further , we get the return of Menzel , Varcoe , Vardy and Dawson, and Caddy , Rivers and HMac ( hopefully) add to our depth.
Whilst we have lost Scarlett, Wojo , Byrnes and Hogan without being respectful they didn't impacy much in 2012 so improving on their contribution should be possible.

The other aspect of interest is how our Development Program compares to the other Teams.
How hard is it to list trim this team , all the Rookies and young guys have shown promise - not a dud amongst them. Is this the genius of Wells or our Development or a combination of the two?

Whichever it is it appears to be a huge strength for the GFC at the moment and long may it continue in this age of AFL inspired "socialism and attempted equalisation"
