An unattractive Ginger? He's our Cameron Ling.
His numbers didn't drop but I thought he played awful towards the end of the season, worst of their vets imoI've seen a couple of things on Twitter suggesting that ther is another high profile Hawk that could be on the move, I have heard a rumour that it is Jordan Lewis also.
Best theory I've read is they thought they were still in the frame to compete this year and next, therefore extended the contracts of their older brigade, and their complete collapse from round 18 onwards has had them reassess. Sam Mitchell has effectively taken an 'early retirement'.4th midfielder picked at the Swans. About to 6th after Heeney and Mills move in.
I can't get a read on their tactics. They send Mitchell to WC where he can maybe help them win a flag. Isn't this tacitly acknowledging they are at their end of their period on top? And yet they are trading all their picks away and keeping most of their older players...
And 43 for Hamling. So maybe 61 for Kersten? 43 is too much..
Makes sense sort of. Its more likely than not you would get a player not as good as Mitchell with pick 14. That's a fair enough deal.Best theory I've read is they thought they were still in the frame to compete this year and next, therefore extended the contracts of their older brigade, and their complete collapse from round 18 onwards has had them reassess. It's definitely a massive gamble but a couple of recent premierships under the belt allow you to take gambles like thatMakes sense sort of. Its more likely than not you would get a player not as good as Mitchell with pick 14. That's a fair enough deal.
However if they then trade away the 23 they got from us and next years first for Jaeger O'Meara and he can't return to his pre-injury levels then they will find themselves with no first round picks since 2015, a bunch of old players and midfield of Tom Mitchell, Langford and Hartung!
And 43 for Hamling.
Ash Browne re Hamling:
"An intriguing one, this one. On thew one hand, why leave the premiership team on the cusp on winning more in the next year or two. On the other hand, he is not certainty to be in the best 22 at the Whitten Oval next year, whereas he would be a walk-up start in Freo's best team in 2017. He's from WA and his best mate, Shane Kersten is heading to the club as well. Gut feel is that he moves."
yesHamling is uncontracted isn't he?
I think it is too risky a gamble. But in reality I suppose they are trapped within their own success and frame of reference. They can't just put their hands up and say to their fans and sponsors: 'Sorry guys we're stuffed; can't win next year. We're cleaning out and going to the draft'. Coming off a hattrick of flags they finished 3rd and made a prelim. Bit like us coming off 2015 (apart from the flags part...), I'm sure the senior coaching group and management could see we had issues, the KPI's would have shown them that, but what could we do? Say we're giving up?It's definitely a massive gamble but a couple of recent premierships under the belt allow you to take gambles like that

Would he though? Who'd he replace? Collins, Ibbo, Dawson, Pearce or Johnson?
Your forwards can expect good delivery in dangerous positions.
Definately Dawson and I would have serious doubts about how many games they get out of Johnno next year.Would he though? Who'd he replace? Collins, Ibbo, Dawson, Pearce or Johnson?
Wow, poor PavGeelong last year bought in Dangerfield, Henderson, Selwood and Zac Smith as well as getting a softer draw last year and look what happened.
Next year we bring in H.Bennell, B.Hill, C.Mac, Kersten and possibly Hamling whilst losing Mayne, C.Pearce, Hannath, Mzungu and DeBoer. Plus you add in more games to Fyfe, Sandi and A.Pearce (possibly Johnson too) and we will have a softer draw then things aren't looking that bad.
Plus a full pre-season into Pick 7, Balic, Yarran, Apeness and all the sudden our 22 looks pretty good with a decent amount of depth.
Hamling could replace Ibbo, Dawson easily, and if people think Johnno will, should play every game next year, its groundhogDefinately Dawson and I would have serious doubts about how many games they get out of Johnno next year.
Is Ballantyne and a late pick for Kersten a possibility? Vague unsubstantiated rumours were that Geelong had some interest in Ballas at some point. If we can get Kersten in and keep the pick in the 30's that will be brilliant
I'm torn about this Hill trade
Looking at it in terms of Hill for Mayne, this is a potential upgrade.
Looking at it in terms of Hill for Pick 23..............Again I'm skeptical.
It's good to see trades getting done but fair dinkum, I feel like we're going after the dregs of trade week and yes I'm aware that's disrespectful to both Hill and McCarthy (potentially Kersten and Hamling as well) but I just don't share the same confidence that others have thus far.
Don't get your negativity, McCarthy was looking like a fair dinkum star before his year off and Hill has played to many quality big games to be questioned. We are now at the "lesser" end with Kersten and Hamlin but they would still easily get into our best 22 imo.
I'll miss him in the brown and gold, his role and abilities are severely unappreciated by many HFC supporters who won't realise what he provided the club until he's gone.
