McCarthy - 12 months out of the game
Hill - Downhill skier

Forgive my negativity but I have incredible skepticism of these trades and sorry, I'm not going to jump up and down with excitement because Bond and Lloyd have finally done something....I would be a bit more excited if they had credits in the bank but they're coming back from negative as far as I'm concerned.
Back in 2013-2015 we would killed for some downhill skiiers with a bit of cockiness and desire for a goal, a la Hill.

Like the suggestion a lot. You feel that Ballas time at Freo is probably done and he may spend time at Peel (I would prefer to play Yarran, Langdon or even Balic). However, it might be very beneficial for him at Geelong, can't thing of a similar player at the cats and I really could see him having a strong presence there for a couple of years. Win win for mine (apart from the Geelong supporters who will be microwaving the membership cards).
Don't think he'll be heading to the cats now... their cap would be suffering as is plus they're really keen lids now

So Fyfe, Bennell,A Pearce, Johnson, Sandilands all essentially out of the game for 12 months. FFS we are doomed.:(

Hill is extremely soft in terms of body contact and contested ball but no way is he a downhill skier. Read the post above from the Hawks supporter who nails it.
"But watching him week out you will see a player who takes pride in running his opponents (plural) into the ground. If you watch him, he provides options that are often ignored. But in doing so he pulls opposing defensive structures out of shape and opens up space and options for team mates.

He is especially noticeable at the end of quarters (and games) as the player to provide the switch option or to break the zone to receive a ball beyond the last defender."

Maybe you need to support a 2nd team. You are almost as bad as Simmofreo few years back. The GWS bandwagon worked a treat for him.

Those downsides are kind of positives though. Almost no player is perfect and we can't possibly draft/buy ourselves a new fyfe year in year out. No club nails every draft pick, even those who've had a bunch in the top 10 for years.

And no club can buy a superstar every year without killing their youth.

Where was I talking about them?

I was talking about the current trades or are you deliberately being obtuse....where have I commented in relation to team prospects for 2017?

The team that won 3 straight premierships obviously saw the need for a "downhill skier" and with the likes of Fyfe, Neale and Blakely in the middle we need some outside class.

That's pretty much exactly what some Port supporters posted about Pearce.

Everyone says that Hill's ball use is elite though. If Danyle went about it exactly the same but hit targets he'd be fine but he just seems to throw the ball on his boot and kick big up and unders to nobody in particular.

You said McCarthy being out of the game for 12 months could be a problem. Just pointing out the group I mentioned have also been out of the game . Make of that what you like and obtuse is my favourite colour.;)

The reason I like the B Hill signing is that he replaces the "Up and Under D Pearce"

I've seen a couple of things on Twitter suggesting that ther is another high profile Hawk that could be on the move, I have heard a rumour that it is Jordan Lewis also.
Has to be at least one more to free up the cap and Lewis is done.... Maybe the Eagles can get a two for one offer?

Re Hamling I have a suspicion we are trying to get a trade for Kersten sorted first. That way we retain the threat of PSD for Hamling and Hamling knows his best mate is def. going to Perth so can announce he wants to as well. Geelong may baulk at 61 (which with academy etc would move up to late 50s) but I think 43 is too high given he is out of contract etc. Sometimes you just lose out when that happens.

Also possible that another trade (e.g. Barlow) may give us a pick in between to use. Hopefully Kersten is sorted by tomorrow afternoon and then we work on Hamling to complete our trades. GCS would be mad not to want Micky B but happy to keep him although the starting inside mid roles are probably taken at Freo.

Just looking at our 2017 Free Agents and looking at what might happen (as it gives some context for trades/drafting this year):

Nat Fyfe - almost certainly he will sign with us long term. Next captain, key leader and the person the team is built around. He will know the benefits of being a one club player and we should have plenty of cash available to outbid other clubs. I don't think he has/is shopping himself around really, but understandably he doesn't want to waste away at a club that isn't contending - if we don't show we are heading that way next year I'd be surprised.

Hayden Ballantyne - he may still leave us this trade period but if he doesn't we could we get some compensation (late 2nd-3rd rounder) next year instead? Although if he does stay, I doubt he'll leave for another club next year.

Garrick Ibbotson - somewhat surprised he hasn't been brought up at all as a trade option this off season as he has decent value still imo. It would leave a gap but is he realistically part of our next premiership push? Will playing our youth push him to the fringe of B22 and will he move on as a free agent next year? If so, could we get some compensation. I'd have thought we could get something more valuable for him at trade this year but he probably doesn't want to leave.

Nic Suban - could we still see a sneaky trade this year? I really don't understand not having him on the trade table as he should have little opportunity to be B22 next year, he has some trade value currently (could we use him to upgrade a pick?) but can't see him getting us compensation as a free agent next year.

David Mundy - can't see him moving even if he loses the captaincy and will extend on yearly contracts.

Aaron Sandilands - won't move and will extend one more year or retire.

Michael Johnson - probably his last season next year and likely to retire.

Over the next couple of years I also suspect we'll lose some solid players due to seeking greater opportunity or wanting to return home but by then we should hopefully get some great currency for them. It would almost strange if we managed to retain all of Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Crozier, Weller, Langdon, Tucker and Balic long term.

Given all that I'd trade our future 2nd and/or 3rd for picks this year as we should be able to generate some picks via free agency and trade next year, and then the following year we can grab some free agents to fill any gaps (as we should have fewer players eligible for free agency that year).

Young on SEN earlier said he didn't think Hamling would make decision until next week sometime.
