Jones wouldn't be in the starting best 22 IMO.

Also if we're to make a climb up the ladder I doubt White will stay cemented in the 22.

I'm pretty sure early on Mick said something along the lines of you don't trade for players who won't make a contribution to the 22, so I think Jones would def have a role in our forward line set up.

That's actually one of the reasons he wants to come. The idea of being supported by Lachie and Levi (forward) or Rowe and Jamo (defence) appeals to him. At other clubs he knows he won't have that much mature support around him and he thinks it will hurt his development.

This is what some fail to understand and think it's all about the short term money.
Players (committed players) want to be developed properly in order to give them the best shot at a long and fruitful career.

A good footballing department, good work conditions, clear direction, loyalty and professionalism can go quite a long way to sway a players mind.

Two years ago, being recruited by Port was tantamount to a footballing death sentence and now their a favoured destiny. It's not luck.

I honestly don't get the love for Jones!

racist!

But on a serious note, he's an athletic tall who is a fantastic contested mark and has improved his set shot kicking this year.

Fitness and repeat efforts has always been his problem, but hopefully similar to Casboult, Butterfant can iron out those deficiencies.

He wont' be getting the best defender in our forward line, a forward line of Levi and Jones will be a serious aerial threat (especially if Walks/Daisy are up there).

His best game this year vs. Collingwood:

If the Dees get pick 11 for Frawley, We could offer pick 6 for 11 & Jack Trengove (if as rumoured to be on the table are true). Only just turned 23, former pick 2 & captain. Has been injured this year, but has played 80 games over 5 seasons. We could then use pick 11 for Mitchell & maybe pick 38. This would sort out the mids, still leaving pick 26 for Jaksch. We can then try & upgrade picks 38 & 44 for mid-late 20 picks using Robbo, Lucas & Warnock. Thoughts?

Why would Melbourne trade pick 11 and Trengrove (former pick 2 & captain) for pick 6?

Jaksch is also pretty under developed physically. Hasn't filled out much at all. Doesn't look ready to help win afl games any time soon.
Just needs to spend an offseason with Levi. That guy didn't have a problem with putting on weight when he came to us, and has now turned into a monster forward (at least in stature - still working on his positioning/use of body). KJ would hugely benefit from a season or two in Hendo/Levi's shadows before breaking out at the same time as Cripps, Menz (hopefully sooner) and Nicky G to lead us to #17.

Well there's plenty of love for Jaksch but the question is whether a 'bottom age' player who has played 7 games over 2 years for a bottom 4 side is ready to step up next year and become an 22 game AFL footballer. In my opinion, no. So even if we triumph in a bidding war for Jaksch, he won't necessarily be best 22 for a year or two and in any case has been playing in defence.

We regain Kreuzer but lose Waite, Robinson and Garlett - that's 47 goals out the door.

So if Watson fails to step up and kick 25 goals next year, our chances of kicking a winning score are diminished.

Hypothetically, if we could use our first 3 draft picks for Mitchell, Jaksch, Membrey and Jones and use a token pick for Blease would we be happy?
I think i would be. They are all young too.

If we don't particularly rate the draft or have any players in our sights that we rate highly then i say go for it.

The only concern for me would be list management regarding the age spread as we would have no 18 year olds coming in this year...but don't think that is really a big deal for one year and of course we could get some back by trading Garlett and Robinson...plus do we get compo if we lose Waite and don't get Higgins or any other free agent?

Agree with all that. I actually think the kid might still be growing too. Definitely taller than what he was last year.

Moves well, judges the ball really well in the air and has great hands. Athletic and a very nice user of the footy too. Saw a lot of him in the NEAFL up here this year. My only concern with him was whether he really has a fire in the belly. Not an aggressive type and has a reputation up here for not exactly busting a gut in the gym. Really nice young talent though overall. A good get.

walker kicked 56 goals in 2011 why can't he do it again.

Maybe he should have met with Buttifant and not Malthouse then :)

He'll be busting his own gut and then asked to bust others.

I think the additions of:

Jones, Jaksch, Blease + Pick #6 (Lever, Ahern, Laverde etc) would be a spiffing off season result for us.

Would absolutely allow us to have a more balanced 22 for 2015.

Jones into the forward line, Jaksch/Lever the developing KPPs, Blease can be the super sub with his break away speed and kicking.

Apparently he completely bombed his interview with McCartney. Might be besties with Macrae and Hrovat, but mCCartney didnt seem to think he was made of the same stuff. Who knows though. The kid has serious talent.

Would help if he got to the interview on time! especially with Macca (who is pretty much a stickler when it comes to punctuality and professionalism).

I've always been taught to arrive at interviews at least 15 mins before hand (at a minimum), Jaksch should have adopted the same policy!

Positives for Jones and apparent in his game v Pies:

- hard chasing/tackling (something our team has missed greatly since Eddie left)
- good closing speed
- great mark
- good, simple and fairly accurate set shot
- plays with confidence when team is 'on'
- could come in and take our #19 if he wanted

Negatives that would come along with him:

- dropped from a bottom 6 side and couldn't regain spot in senior side (variety of reasons)
- low confidence can render him useless (see: Waite) and be prone to massive errors
- kicking can be erratic
- has been prone to 'lazy' football (something I think Mick would work out very quickly)

So in summary, he could be an enigma - anywhere from a 30-40 goal 2nd/3rd tall forward who could flourish without the #1 defender to a poor man's J. Waite without the hot-headed streak...

Matty411's Conclusion: Worth no more than our 3rd rounder in a trade, but worth recruiting nonetheless - could really come into his own as a Best 22 player under a good coach/leadership group, which I think we now can comfortably say we have.

If we gain Jaksch and Jones but lose Waite, I feel our KPP balance would almost be solid. Maybe one more kid (Durdin or McKenzie) then we're set. If Knockers gets traded, I'd like to think we rookie a young beanpole, too.

All good - playing next to Rowe down back will sort him out re: fire in the belly. If he can't learn from Rowie's passion, heart and competitiveness, then I'll be Warwick Cappa's uncle.

Think McCartney's style would be tough for many kids coming through to adapt too i.e. his hard, principle style. Whereas Mick has a good balance between warm/approachable and dedicated taskmaster. Demands respect but also cares greatly for the players.

That's part of why Mick's likely been around so long - great 'man manager'. Wayne Bennett (Broncos - NRL) is cut from the same cloth in that regard.
