Not sure it'd make sense now. If we traded up to 15, we might've been able to do 8, 15 and a 2nd for JHF. Keeping next years 1st in tact. Then maybe Bonner for Rioli.

If we gave up 33, 43, etc for 21, then we would only give that for JHF with the 2x 1sts, because no one is trading 21 for Rioli, and you would lose the pick 43 perfect currency for Rioli.

Personally it would seem that the GWS to Brissy deal would rule out any chance we deal with them.
There is absolutely zero chance that we trade in JHF without trading out a player and don't give up this and next year's first (plus change). Zero. Zip. Nada. If you ever thought that was a possibility, prepare to be disappointed.

It would've been nice to get pick 15, but Brisbane wouldn't have done it. They could (and did) get a better offer for pick 15 than our suite of late picks. But for pick 21, our suite of late picks is more realistic.

What I was suggesting was 8 + 21 + next year's first for JHF. Without us giving up a young star, it'll take every cent of that.

So Bowes has said he wants to play for Geelong. Apparently Geelong have been interested in getting him for some time, not just since GC threw pick 7 into the salary dump picture. If that's true, the AFL should step in and say Geelong can't have pick 7 - even with a token trade offering the Cats would still be getting a bargain.

Why should they be punished for running their club really well. We should be taking note of what has given them sustained success.

The Lions still need points for their father/sons.

What do you think pick 15 was. It was a 1st rounder. The deal has always been 2x 1sts.

It is not zero possibility to have thought that if we had turned all our points into 15, that 2x1sts that we had this year could've been a good base for the deal. There's no guarantee that our next years first wont be 15 or greater. Combine that with another solid pick/player and the deal might've been possible.

21 now really holds zero value, as it is too far out and giving up all our points for it kills all the other deals we're trying to do.

I personally still think we're trying to get JHF, Esava and Rioli + likely someone we don't know or Graham is still in play.

Now that Geelong have taken on Bowes's salary dump, they can salary dump Ratugolea to us for pick 58.

And GWS can salary dump 15 and Haynes to us for a future second.

Yes, but giving up our points for 15 made sense, giving up our points for 21 makes far less sense.

Personally I suspect we would've put ourselves in the running for 15, but our picks were only about a 400 point gain for Brissy, GWS at approx 600 points have likely just outbid us.

Will Crows do 8 and 21 for 5. Seems like NMFC want a top 5 pick.

It's absolutely outrageous that last year's premier is going to be able to bring in pick 7 and a good player for the cost of a bit of salary cap. Gold Coast should be ashamed of themselves.

We were never going to be able to give up our points for pick 15. We would be able to do it for pick 21.

Obviously I'm not suggesting we wouldn't rather have pick 21 than pick 15, of course we would, but Brisbane wouldn't have given us 15 for what we had to offer. They might be able to be convinced to give us 21.

It doesn't matter now, but 1500 points for 1100 points was definitely a chance.

Pick 8 - 1551

Rest = 1502
Pick 33 - 563
Pick 43 - 378
Pick 53 - 233
Pick 57 - 182
Pick 60 - 146

Bris 15 = 1112

1550 points for 1100 points was definitely a chance.
It wasn't, because somebody was always going to make them a better offer for #15. And they did.

Our suite of picks for #21 is a much more reasonable and realistic offer than our suite of picks for #15.

This is in addition to the fact that if pick 15 was in play why didn't Melbourne try to get it instead of trading with us to get 27? It was never on.

Where's all the talk about the system being broken when a basket case bottom 4 team is salary dumping with a top 10 pick to the premiers, who apparently have ample cap space?

  1. 3 father son picks under the old system for a dual browlow medallist, the full back of the century and this years AA captain.
  2. Location, location, location
  3. Free agency which is meant to give less successful clubs access to quality players lets them go to successful cashed up clubs instead.
  4. etc

Yes but this deal could only occur for Brisbane on draft night, a team can only take the same number of picks as list spots on draft night. Problem is it would have meant that Port had to have at least 5 list spots.
Brisbane need to load up on future picks so they can be traded on draft night.

Well we can't select the best keyback, the second best key forward and best mid the game has seen in the last 15 years for three picks in the 40s.

We can't take advantage of being located in a swing seat to get our home ground, that only we play at, upgraded for free, with the sweetest of sweat heart stadium deals.

We can't take advantage of being the only coastal, rural club in the state that produces ~60% of the games talent, so can offer both the small city lifestyle whilst also bringing players home.

The lesson we can learn is that you don't overpay to keep players, and I'd argue it's a lesson we learned about 10 years ago. And we have been able to implement that lesson because we have a culture and a history that the other expansion teams don't.

The other lesson we can learn is that while culture makes you a home for the players you do attract, winning makes you a destination club, and there's no substitute.

Weird one. They've lost currency for Dunkley.

I actually think the opposite, it could unlock the Dunkley deal.
Brisbane give F 1st + 21
Bulldogs give Dunkley & F 2nd

Bulldogs get a First round and early second (upgrade)
Brisbane get a 3rd F 2nd pick - now have 3 x 2023 2nd rounders allowing them to trade 2 of them on draft night (points for Ashcroft & Fletcher)
Although, reading further WB are after 2 x firsts.
