VAFA General Discussion 2022-2023-2024

If they don't have any kind of feeder program they will inevitably die. Its important and vafa should be pushing them to try and get one or something similar up, easier said then done i know but not many players are playing into their 30's anymore. Numbers can fall off very quickly.
The problem for the wicks is the area is majority private schools or kids who already play for Vamps/City. Hard to recruit the kids (25-30??) to start a 19s program when they could go to local prem clubs with established programs

We just endured the longest season of all time!
Should be cutting weeks out of the roster preseason is six weeks away!
We had a 11 team grade in 2022. Playing 20 rounds plus finals plus 2 bye weeks. It was a killer. We were lucky not to play finals that year. Really affect the following season for lots of clubs. Add to the fact that the previous season was the Covid year.

Coburg as a club is struggling on the field in the VFL. There is the potential they could join the VAFA full-time if things don't turn around. They do have strong financials off it though.

Sandringham don't exactly make a lot of money out of hosting VAFA finals every year.
a. Coburg would join the NFNL, not the VAFA.
b. Sandringham are funded partially by St Kilda and a well established function centre so don’t necessarily need the finals revenue
c. Coburg have to raise ~$1M per year on their own to reach the VFL minimum standards. The NFNL finals revenue would be a very attractive proposition for them, VAFA would not come close to comparable dollars.

Coburg would move to EDFL if VFL becomes too hard. Need to have a junior program that is viable and thats not VAFA.
Need to start from scratch with players as well. Disaster. There was a Coburg team in Ammos in 70s. Thats where Phil Cleary came from before heading to VFA.

If Preston went the same way, I reckon they'd more likely join the NFNL (do they currently have any junior teams?). If they didn't have juniors, there is the option of merging with the Preston Bullants VAFA club.

Is the VAFA club a breakaway from the VFL club in any way?
" Although they are separate entities, Preston AFC maintains close links with the Northern Bullants, who compete as a standalone side in the VFL. Both clubs use the same logo, colours and jumper design, and the Northern Bullants were also known as the Northern Blues from 2012 until 2020.[2]

A number of players have played for both Preston AFC and the Northern Bullants, including many who played for the Northern Bullants in the VFL Development League before that competition was disbanded in 2017.[2]

In 2022, Preston AFC became the first VAFA club to play a curtain-raiser for a VFL club, with the senior women's side hosting Parkside at Preston City Oval before the VFL game between the Northern Bullants and Carlton.[14] "

A bit vague as to whether its a breakaway but it doesn't look like it

VAFA club grew out of the Preston Bullants JFC in the YJFL. Have always had close ties to the Northern Bullants (same home ground originally, same jumper etc) but not directly affiliated

You can understand Division 3 having it this year given the number of clubs. A final 5 with 10 clubs per division could prove problematic.

half of the AFL teams make finals each year. No reason why there can't be top 5 in VAFA. It makes the final home and away rounds far more interesting for the mid table teams. If grounds is the issue, then just play first week of finals at ground of highest place teams.

Season becomes too long.

It would see top 3 grades finishing the week of the AFL grand final.

It’s also rewarding mediocre teams a finals appearance.
