To be fair to Jeka, he didn't let him run in 5 metres - he was standing the mark & couldn't move until the umpire called play on, which the umpire refused to do until the ball was nearly being kicked
This happens almost every time at afl level. It is maddening.

Just another frustrating and confusing development in the way the game is now being umpired.

Thought Neale was very good today, played like a player who has realised his time has arrived in the AFL. Hopefully he owns it next week against the Bombers and it’s a turning point in his career

Yeah, I think he has something.

Has a bit to work on, but what young bloke doesn't?

Just needs the ongoing nurturing and encouragement they all need.

All I'm going on is that he did nothing wrong, promptly got dropped, been pushed into a pocket and then criticised for being a round peg in a square hole.
Can’t argue with that…but could make same statement about Knevitt last year?

(At least he is finally - but only just - playing back inside mid in VFL…although now his best chance might actually be back on the wing as I would replace 2E!)

They HAVE to play him (IMHO) and like you I will be hoping he has his breakout game and goes from there

Would like them to drop the stand rule. I think the stats do not support it has helped in anyway - all it does is give the umpire another thing to think about and get wrong

Neale was good. He is a certainty to replace Hawk.

Hardie was a level above most players on the ground. He had a touch of Stevie J with how he played today. Clearly the club doesn’t think this will translate to the next level. Cest la vie

Conway did what I expected he should. If we were actually playing to win on Friday night he should have been in the side. No question

Lawson was ok. Not enough to get a game in the afl next week.

Knevitt has to play afl next week.

COS has talent but is physically not ready yet. I would forget about him playing AFL this year. Just get him in gym and pump him full of creatine. Go the full Quentin Lynch.

Agree totally - he’s also very clean below his knees and had some very good moments with the groundball 👍
Bodes well for the future as I also think the overhead marking will get better as his confidence grows.

Could be wrong but I sensed shift in him for this game, he’s had moments this year, like pushing Scott off the ball in the north game, but he’s probably been hampered by being allowed to develop without the realistic chance of actually taking the role. He played like the man today, particularly with his ground ball work setting up goals like a fit Hawkins.
We saw it with Hawkins in the GF when he had to become the man. I hope that’s what Neale does now!

The stand rule is terribly umpired as is the running through the mark rule.

You could see Jeka urging the umpire to call play on, motioning to how far off his line the Port player had moved but there was seemingly no care
Sad really. No consistency then we get the AFL mouthpiece spinning the crap out of every ridiculous decision until we finally realise it's our fault because we can't possibly know the fine print .... yawn.

It is really starting to piss a lot of people off. But that is the consistent agenda in Oz now isn't it?

I don't see the point of playing knevitt next week. He would be played out of position in the AFL. Can't see Scott giving him any midfield time even though he should

That is so right. He looked like this was a **** it moment, I am here from Shannon.

Wing is his position right now.

Even today he wasn't that clean with his hands and got caught plenty of times on the inside. But he's got a great tank, chases and tackles really well and is a great mark.

So this traits are perfect for an AFL winger and that's where he's been training.

Not the man on the mark but whoever should have been on to not allowing him to sneak around because that's the only way he'd score from there

If you stand in the position needed to stop a player sneaking around it would 50m penalty against.

It is literally impossible to stop, and is a madness ruling that has been introduced for no good reason.

Did he play much wing today?

No he was mainly midfield. He played mainly wing earlier in the year and was very good. He has transitioned more inside mid in recent weeks.

But nothing today suggested he's ready to be an inside mid at AFL level. On the wing he's got a good chance of competing and contributing and as he develops maybe he becomes an inside mid over the next few years.
