I’m Out of the loop here. Why is it such a surprise that Dean is playing? Wasn’t he training 8 weeks ago (ish)?
Because the constant narrative from the club is that they’re going to have him ready for day 1 of preseason. There’s never been any hint that they were even considering playing him in the VFL.

Because he's on the long term injury list, and didn't think he could even play VFL, as he isn't technically on the list (markov took his place) but there must be some loophole, or its just an excemption based on the fact he has never played a senior game.

Hypomathematically…if Dean had 2-3 high level hit outs in the VFL…and we copped a season ending injury to another AFL listed player (say someone not in our top 30) could we consider bringing him back on the list and potentially playing him. Dumb question

Excited to watch the VFL tomorrow in the off week. Expect the boys to turn up in a big way boring some of them will be pushing for finals!

Yes, its possible. But given this is an elimination final, if we lose, that could be it and he wont have any other game time until next year. But I wouldn't think they'd put him back on the list a few weeks before the season has finished, even if we got a random long term injury. The plan was more to set him up for 2024. It'll be good for his confidence if he can get through this game.

I like that we (fans and media) had absolutely no idea that Dean would play. It’s good that the club doesn’t always telegraph its plans. I’m hoping for some more surprises - if we need them - in the finals.

And good luck to Dean, he’s almost a new recruit albeit one who’s been in our system a couple of years and apparently well liked and regarded. I’m not sure what he’s been given to do by the club, but I’ve seen him with the coaching group and holding the requisite clip board at VFL games.

Some thought because he was put on LTI he was ineligible
And to be fair the club has constantly said he is out for season (probably to take the pressure off any return date )

He was ineligible under the rules. AFL used its power to do whatever it feels like whenever it feels like to grant an exemption.

If we win today, and Dean goes OK, would the exemption be needed again next week, and possibly the week after? Could be tricky going cap in hand to the AFL before every VFL final, to ask ‘pretty please can Dean play?’

He'd still be ineligible to play AFL, but AFL used common sense and went for the spirit of the rule to allow him to play VFL. The no state League rule is just to stop clubs faking Unavailable players.

Think it’d be a season-long exemption now. Applies to all games unless we were playing Sydney.
