The AFL has confirmed the 2024 season dates for the Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW competitions.

Both competitions will commence the 2024 season on the weekend of March 23-24, aligning with Round Two of the 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership season.

SMITHY’S VFL

The 2024 Smithy’s VFL home and away season will consist of 21 rounds, with all teams to play 18 matches.

A competition bye will be scheduled across the weekend of April 6-7 when the VFL will take on the SANFL in a representative clash in Adelaide during the AFL Gather Round weekend.

It will be the VFL’s first representative game since 2017 and the first time the VFL takes on the SANFL since 2016.

The 2024 Smithy’s VFL season will again feature a Wildcard Round following its introduction in 2023.

Wildcard Round will see the team that finishes the home and away season in seventh position on the ladder play against the team that finishes 10th, while eighth will take on ninth. The two winners will advance to the 2024 Smithy’s VFL Finals Series.

Wildcard Round will be played on the weekend of August 24-25, with the opening weekend of the 2024 Smithy’s VFL Finals Series, featuring the qualifying and elimination finals, to then follow during the AFL pre-finals bye.

The 2024 Smithy’s VFL Grand Final is scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 22, the weekend before the 2024 Toyota AFL Grand Final.

The AFL can confirm the 2024 Smithy’s VFL season will again feature the same 21 teams from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland who competed in 2023.

It's at 2:17:10-2:17:20 in the below video. Might have to watch at 0.5 speed. Sadly the cameraman zoomed out at the wrong time & the YouTube footage is quite blurry. It was on Cluch before they went into administration and the footage was removed from there. This vision was posted to YouTube but it's not clear. You can still tell how high he was though over a big pack of defenders, huge in context of the game too - a spot in the grand final on the line & this mark and goal brought them back to within 3 points vs the undefeated side with 4 minutes to go. A big game player who seems to like the big moments, he's 6'2-6'3 so not quite KPF size but he's super quick and hard to match up on with his athleticism, hard to think of a comparison amongst AFL listed players, I suppose because he's that in between size but glad he's having a crack.

Word is from down this way is that Jarryd Blair (who is Wonny’s player coach) has been wording up the club big time about Jack Hutchinson for a while, hence the signing. Eye to mid season draft for this fella 100% if he performs well at vfl level. Originally from Inverloch.

Sparkes won the Gippy League MVP this year. Also played at Inverloch before making the switch to a much stronger league in the 2022 season I think it was. Played down back more earlier in his career before getting more midfield opportunities and really thriving.

Lesson for players reading this - play in better leagues if you can. Inverloch and Wonthaggi are 10 mins away but you get so much more exposure and opportunities playing in the gippy league. It’s bloody hard to stand out in lower leagues if you’re not Archer Reid sized.

Bit of a list turnover

I went to VFL training last night and discovered:

  • Crocker seems to be in the rehab group. Or at least doing a lot of running
  • Our 2024 NGA prospects are training with us -- Luke Quaynor, Tadgh McCarthy and Doug Kerr (I saw the first two, I assume Doug was there too -- with chargers not back training for a few more weeks)

*Nicky Christian is training hoping to get a spot in the team. I thought it was him, after I saw a bloke that looked like Michael Christian there, but I wasn't for sure at the time.
I've since had it confirmed it was Nicky. He is playing off half back. Looked to be handling the step up from coates league to VFL training with the big boys, well enough.
*Luke Quaynor is a replica of his older brother. Has the body shape similar to IQ in his draft year. Btw, he's 17

Nicky is wearing #14 with a white cap on.

I'm out of the VFL loop..was this a shock? Where has he gone?
We had heard it was coming, but given he works and lives in Bendigo, the commute wasn't easy and so he has decided to stay closer to home.

But he's been such a great player for us for a long time.

Can't Blame him for Deciding to leave so not much Stress of Driving to Bendigo and back Few Times a Week and During the Week after his Job Finished

Yeah would be quite the travel. We were blessed to have him as long as we have, especially in 2023 when he could have chosen to play down there, but gave it the extra year.
